I'm planning on spending 10-14 days in the Adirondacks in October backpacking. Recommendations on where to start?

High peaks is an option. I'm planning a Mount Marcy summit in late October, you could probably bag most of the 46 high peaks if you wanted to in 10-14 days.

Where are you planning on starting?
I'm interested in doing a few peaks but I'd like to spend more time in the valleys. Hoping to see a moose.

was going to take the Van Hoevenberg Trail from the adk loj, I'm a total novice as far as mountains go so I figured it'd be a decent but doable challenge.
I hear Colden, Gothics and Cascade are great too, but I'm new to the area so I'm no expert. I'm gonna give those a try before it gets too cold to do it without costly gear.
I don't think you'll have any luck with moose, though. There's only a couple hundred in the whole state, afaik.

Piggybacking off of this:
My buddy from college wants to rent a cabin in the Adirondacks for us all to get together for a weekend before or after deer season this fall. Anyone have experience with this?

I think late October and even maybe early November would do-able if you have one of those reflective insulation things to put under your pad, a sleeping pad and a down sleeping bag as long as you don't get wet. I borrowed gear when I was hiking in northern Norway last summer and that was pretty standard there until it starts to snow.

Wow I didn't realize. Seemed like I saw them somewhat often just the other side of champlain. Either way I'm not that big on peaks.

Dont forget your bear mace
Beware of beaver fever. Comes from drinking the water, even though it looks clean.
The area around Blue Mountain is very nice, they got the history museum there too. Also lots of moose sign.
