Yeah that's kind of the point, I WANT them to murder the shit out of each other. I want to have a miniature riverbed in my living room, bloodthirsty food chain and all. Minimal assistance on my end keeping them alive.
>>
>>1090788
You won't be able to have a self sustaining system in your house mang. You'd still have to feed them and replace the ones that get eaten.

Use yer head mang. The minnows and crayfish will get wrecked in a day and then if you put something like a bass in there it'd wreck the sunfish. There's your food chain. Sounds pretty high maintenance to me, but u do u buddy.

You could just do all sunfish and treat it like a normal aquarium.
>>
>>1090813
>>1090833

Not him but it really depends on the species and how much room/hiding spots are given to the crayfish.

NO I don't want to throw a big fucking bass into a living room aquarium with crawdads. YES I know it would eat them, which is exactly why I specified that I only wanted to thrown in small stuff.

Anyone know if there is universal measurements for sink tip fly lines? I'm looking at Cortlands website and they have three sink lines to choose from, 3,6,and 9 are the ratings given for the rate they sink, only thing is they don't explain anywhere that I can find what those number mean as far as how fast they sink. I'd assume the higher the number the faster it sinks but that still doesn't help me much

Also if anyone here has recommendations or tips on rigs for salmon fishing with fly gear lmk. I've been doing a bit of reading and I think my biggest obstical is adjusting for the right depth. Everything else I can understand I'm pretty sure

The guide later said that last one was at least 100lbs.

Turns out the sharks were the reason nothing else was biting that day. The water was just lousy with them.
The guide was all apologetic about not being able to get us on any redfish for us. I didn't mind. I was just out there to catch FISH, and the sharks were unforgettable.
The redfish- and trout-specific trips would be for another day.

Sink rate is measured in inches per second.
>>
>>1090902
All I can I say is if you ever catch one, doesn't matter the size make sure you handle it properly. Even a little one's teeth can get a hold of you and shred some skin. Seen drunk people fuck around with the small ones when they aren't used to catching them and wind up getting bit.
>>
>>1090932
IMO the smaller ones are more dangerous to handle because they're rediculously flexible and can turn around and bite you when you pick them up. I saw a mexican get nipped hard by a little black tip.
>>
>>1090914
3= 3 inches of sink/ second
6= 6 inches of sink/ second
9= 9 inches of sink/ second
also know that salmon are migratory. with steelhead, atleast, they travel, then rest. you try to catch them resting in deep pools about walking speed. fish cover, but dont settle down too much on one hole. fish every hole lightly, and if you get one, keep fishing that hole because more are probably in there.

>with all the hype in the world that i got bait, i rig my trolley rig and send it out
>the fish was the perfect size for the harness
>set it and forget it
>fishing about 30 feet away from it, keeping an eye on it
>suddenly the water explodes and i hear the distinctive scream of an old penn reel's bait runner
>oshitdasmine.wav
>run over
>crank down the drag, and set the hook with everything i've got
>i set the hook so hard that i even peeled line out through my fully-locked-down drag
>i eventually turn it around
>get it to the side of the pier
>pic related

It was.
Those sharks all came in less than an hour's time. It was incredible how many there were-and how many different ones-and the one I kept was actually one of the smallest ones.
It just goes to show you how many sharks are around without us even noticing.

It's also a graphic reminder that the Southern US used to be infamous for its "shark infested waters." But fish those shark infested waters with some fresh-cut bait and you can have yourself a grand old time.
>>
>>1090788
You could do an aquarium using collected North American specimens, particularly sunfish and yellow perch. They are going to be messy and it's going to require powerful filtration probably some kind of sump, a large tank, like 100 gallons + if you want to keep more than a few fish. Depending on where you live, you're going to need some means of keeping the water to temperature. Unheated or in certain cases unchilled tanks are prone to fluctuation and won't cut it for any serious fishkeeper.

You may very well have to contend with disease. The thing will be a petri dish.

All that said, you sound like kind of a retard who's going about this for the wrong reasons, doesn't understand aquariumkeeping and won't care enough to do his research or invest anything so you should probably just not.

>>
>>1090963
It's easier at any rate.
Before I caught that run of sharks, it was 3-1/2 hours of soaking bait and not even getting a bite on anything. It ran through my mind more than once that I could have caught a pile of bream in the time when I wasn't catching anything.
But bream aren't sharks.

Random Q, how does massive flooding like in Houston right now affect freshwater fisheries and fishing? i.e. how are fish populations displaced, where do they end up after rivers flood or reservoirs are opened up. Are established populations in reservoirs and such totally destroyed, or do they mostly stay in place?
>>
>>1091124
I heard that freshwater ponds by the shore got flooded with salt water from our last hurricane here in NJ. There was a fish kill and the state had to stock the lake back with freshwater fish.

it kills most of the fish except the varieties that can live in brackish waters.
>>
>>1091134
Even the reservoir populations? I'm sure the rivers and ponds near the coast get murdered but I'm wondering how the stuff further inland would fare. It would seem river fish would get washed out into floodwaters as the rivers overflow, and die either in the nasty floodwater or once the waters recede.

River fish are pretty amazing at swimming. Remember these things have evolved to be in water. Look at any migratory/anadromous fish and see what they go through.

Flooding rivers is sometimes how fish get upstream in the first place and populate that area.

It's weird. We have a camp on one of the northeasts top salmon rivers but yet this will be my first fall ever trying to catch any of them. We used to take kayaks back through the estuary to where the water gets really shallow and during certain periods of the run you can get out and look around and won't be able to see a single portion of the river bottom. It will be entirely blanked with salmon. They jump like crazy every 5 seconds too for no apparent reason. Such an amazing thing to witness.

>best way to cook perch and crappy?

My favorites are either pan fried with breadcrumb coating or deep fried beer batter...

Panfried:
>pan of 1/4" hot oil, add 1/4 stick butter when hot
>plate of flour, chilled, lightly seasoned
>plate of breadcrumbs, chilled
>couple whisked eggs
>coat in flour, then egg, then breadcrumb
>pan fry, 30-75 sec per side depending on thickness

Beer battered
>2-3 qt canola/peanut oil to 370 deg F in a cast iron pot
>batter = flour + beer + salt/pepper/anything else
>chilled plate of seasoned flour
>coat in flour, dip in batter, fry in oil until golden brown
>>
>>1091642
>Crappie
I like to grill it, skin-on or whole/beheaded.
>scale and filet or scale and behead/gut
>rub with salt and pepper, both sides or inside+out
>throw on (preferably wood) gril, skin-side down
>DO NOT FLIP flilets, flip whole
>cook until skin easily peels off

If you have issues fileting them, you probably have either a dull or a stiff filet knife.

The last time I caught crappie I did this, but like I said I had trouble with the fillet, I got all of the meat, just in little quarter-sized bits for the most part. I sharpened the knife before, I think the fish was probably a bit small, I had a tough time getting the meat off of the skin side after separating it from the fish. I'll probably grill or bake it whole, thanks? Any tips on scaling a fish properly? head on or off?
>>
>>1091706
Gut the fish, then scale it, then filet it if you're gonna, otherwise behead it.

No matter what you do, scales will get EVERYWHERE, so either do it outside far enough from your house you don't care, or somewhere you can wash off with a hose.

Spend the $5 for a dedicated scaler tool. The Eagle Claw one works fine.

If you have it or can afford one, a 6" filet knife is best for panfish (crappie, 'gills, etc). Get the most flexible blade you can, it's more important than sharpness or edge retention on little fish. The Rapala/Normark Superflex knives are good for panfish, as much as I like my carbon-steel Old Hickory it's simply too stiff. If money is an issue, buy a $3 chinesium "boning knife" off amazon.

>>
>>1091924
I fish probably 3-4 times a week on average in salwater. Rinse them off after every trip, greased probably once a month. That might be excessive but I've yet to run into any problems.
>>
>>1091124
asked my Freshwater Ecosystems professor this question, she has a doctorate in freshwater/saltwater ecosystems
-the worst impact would be from sewage plants being flooded and from pollution spiking as it runs out of urban areas into the ecosystems.
-most of the flooding is caused by rain which means that some systems like those found in streams, rivers, and some urban areas may be able to tolerate it as they see flood events more regularly
-isolated ecosystems like wetlands or ponds may be at more of a risk because they wont deal with the flooding very well
-really the biggest problem will be from pollution and wastewater making it harder for the populations to rebound,
>>
>>1091931
the key is that most flooding isn't from storm surge and therefore isn't salt water. Most of it is freshwater from rain.

If we get gas from other refineries then what's the deal with the ETA that next shipment will be next week.
Luckily I live on campus, so I have no where I need to be but it's inconvenient.
>>
>>1092165
It's not necessarily that we would get gas before next week, it's that a lot of people felt they needed gas TODAY. I mean people were stopping at gas stations to put $5 in their car. If everybody tried to get gas all at once regardless if all the refineries were working there'd be stations that ran out. People panicking made it way worse than it should've been.

I'm not saying gas prices wouldn't have gone up or some gas stations wouldn't run out, because that's a significant amount of gas production lost, but it's not the end of the world. Refineries are already starting to come back online, and one of the major pipelines is supposed to be back up by Sunday (assuming nothing is heavily damaged.)

It's worth noting I saw a whole lot of gas trucks delivering gas today, and if people can stop freaking out for second we can make the gas last until all the refineries are back up.

So those smallest model 3 floating rapalas have been doing ok.

Pros: catch fish

Cons: it slays sunnies, literally. Often they'll eat the tail trebel hook and hook removal is harmful since the trebel acts like a one way. Multiple times the 2nd trebel will find a way to hook the poor sunfish's eye. Smallies will sometimes get hooked in the gill plate too.
I made them barbless as well. But still last trip I just stopped using them when it seemed more than half the catches had harmful hook ups.
Using only one trebel seems like a good idea.

Another thing is that it's hard to cast far. It's good enough for smaller rivers however.

Also, until very recently, those fish weren't living in and feeding on polluted industrial waste, complete with heavy metal contamination.
That shit is real, and heavy metal poisoning is a hell of a thing.

Man, I need to get an anchor or something
>Go out to the vape for holiday
>Borrow cousins open top kayak and try to fish around the edge of the salt marsh
>Thing weighs twice as much as my shitty jerry-rigged kayak
>Catches wind like an actual sail
>Spend the whole trip fighting the wind and the current
>Takes 45 minutes of hard paddling and fighting the wind to get back for 15 minutes of fishing
So what are the essential accessories for a kayak? I have 2 PVP and zip tie rod holders and a hook for the paddle, I'm thinking I want to get a small mushroom anchor.

The Cape, phoneposting is retarded
>>
>>1093242
The mushroom anchors are really heavy for what they do, in my 15ft skiff, I usually carry an 8 lb danforth and two smaller (1lb )folding claw anchors, the bottom is a mix of mud and sand here but most of the time in water shallower than 10ft just one of the claw anchors is enough to fight the tide and that's in a 15ft skiff, in a kayak a small folding anchor is apt to be more than enough.

Let me share a story with you lads. Today I went out fishing for panfish on a 1/32 oz jog with a beetle on it. Hook up with about a 1.5 lb bass. I have trouble controlling it with my ultralight 5' and 4lb line. He get stuck in weeds. Big ass gator out of nowhere notices. Grabs my catch and devours it in front of me. FUCK that gator I cussed him out for a minute until he started advancing then I got the fuck out of there. I feel really bad about that poor bass. I don't want to fish anymore :^(

>Navionics updates

It depends on the lake. The map data is continuously uploaded from personal sonars, if so enabled, and map uplates are available periodically. So the more expensive fishing boats cruising around your lake the better it will be mapped. Small lakes, or very remote lakes, may not be so precise. In upstate NY where I fish in the fingerlakes, Lake George, Champlain, etc the detail is. Along with sonar, it completely changed fishing for me because of how much I learned from it.

Idk about salmon, but that does seem to work with other fish. With bass fishin, they will hit anything when they are feeding like pre-spawn or a good pressure front coming in. But other times like summer when the water is really warm, they ignore the big spinners and stuff because they're too lazy to chase what looks like a school of fish. That's when you switch to the finesse stuff. A smaller Texas rigged worm or wacky rig, it looks like a super easy meal dropping right in front of them. Or a small jerkbait and sometimes even if they aren't hungry, they can't resist the dying little baitfish right in front of them.

The third option is when fish are active but not eating like the sneks I was just catching that were guarding the fry. That's when you go for reaction strikes and something like the Meppsâ„¢ running past them really quick will get the fish to take a shot at it.

Also I think this may be a dull green sunfish. First sunfish I have caught down here that wasn't a typical bland bluegill with the vertical stripes.

bead and fly, usually a flashy streamer
bright colored jigs
head on shrimp/prawns
shore jigging with spoons
there's lots of methods. flossing is the easiest

>>1093588
Its ethical enough to be a legal method of take.
Lots of fish do get snagged though and those tend to be mainly bucks.

>>1093636
>glorified snagging
It's snagging if the hook is on the outside of the mouth or on the body. If the fish is hooked inside the mouth then it's a legal catch. Shit happens and flossing salmon with just a hook is considered snagging in most places. One can bitch all they want about it, won't change a thing. The rules are there, if you follow them then you're good.
>>
>>1093722
>If the fish is hooked inside the mouth then it's a legal catch
thats the thing though, a lot of times the hook lands on the outside of the mouth. the IGFA doesnt even recognise flossed fish because they're considered snagged.

you guys are gonne meme on me but i am currently shopping for a zebco.
is there any difference between a spincast rod and a baitcast rod? my dad left me some premium top quality custom made rods. and i want to but zebcos on all of them.
my other question is zebco has a lot of different models, and i cant figure out which would be best for 10+ lb catfish. i basically just want "the biggest" one, but i cant figure out which one that is. seems like either the omega, 808 or the 888 is my best bet but i cant figure out what the differences are between them. the also have some other model called the bullet or something which may be the best.
reason is my dad left me a bunch of baitcasting rods and reels, but i just cant use the reels. i tried *reel* hard and can most of the time pull it off but the frustration of a backlash is just too much. its like i am afraid to cast.
>>
>>1090929
Oyster bars oyster bars oyster bars, find them on a low tide and fish them on high tide. Use live bait "finger mullet, mud minnows, ***blue crab halfs*** etc." (expert tip, learn how to throw a cast net). Fish during the cool parts of day during warm months. Fish hot part of day during winter. Use google earth to scope out potential fishing areas to find structure. Use a carolina rig. Research what knots to use. You will catch some nice black drum and redfish!
>>
>>1093752
A lot of the "spincast" rods have the short "pistol" grip instead of a long fighting butt, which is largely out of production and limited to the cheaper rods (ugly stik gx2 is the only one I've seen recently). However, there is absolutely nothing keeping you from throwing a spincaster on a casting rod.

here's the right answer: get a couple of abucgarcia ambassadeurs or similar, and learn to cast them

the answer you want is order a few 808 salt reels online, and replace the line that comes on it with something better, because i am willing to bet it will come with zebco omniflex. i'd say get something like #17-#20 berkley big game. get high vis if you fish night a lot, it will be worth it.

Idk what the fuck you're talking about I'm too hungover to get out early. Too poor for a boat. And I'll spend all day trying to catch a single dink. Also I care more about tides and air pressure than time of day.
>>
>>1093752
They're interchangeable. That's the way all spincast reels have been designed to be from the very beginning. Any rod that can take a baitcaster will fit a Zebco.

And your instincts are right-for bigger fish, use a bigger spincasting reel. Zebco's 808 and Daiwa's larger Goldcast and Silvercast reels are what you want for larger catfish.

As for dealing with backlashes, modern baitcasters have gotten far better in that regard, but the potential for backlash is always there. It's just inherent in the design of a reel with a free- or easy-spinning spool. To get better results, you have to get used to casting with a smoother motion and having your thumb ride lightly on the spool as you're casting, not unlike using your thumb on the button of a Zebco to stop line from paying out on the cast. If overhand casting creates too many backlashes for you, try using a sidearm motion for better control.
>>
>>1093797
Berkley Big Game line is $6.50 per spool at Walmart, so the price is negligible either way.

>>1093804
Forgot to mention, you'll probably need to change your grip on the rod to get room for your thumb to easily ride on the spool. Wrap your middle finger around the trigger of the casting rod instead of your index finger and you'll be able to easily thumb most every bass-sized baitcaster ever made.
>>
How the fuck do I fish (fresh) dead bait? I see guys where I'm haul in massive reds on dead cut mullet/pinfish/crab but every time I try it I end up with nothing but sailcats and the occasional small reds. I've straight up copied people's rigs. Carolina, fishfinder, etc. Am I just having shitty luck?
>>
>>1093806
Yes but isn't big game like 1000yds+?

You don't need anywhere close to that. And if you were spooling 100yds each season, the feeder spool would be full of trash like afterwards.

Sorry anon but that's just stupid. I just bought my first casting reel a couple days ago and have only had one bad backlash from overhead casting, can't do it. Every other cast has been perfect. 1/4 oz or heavier lure (preferably 3/8 oz) and have the drag, spool tension, and brakes set properly and you should have no problem.

You probably just don't have those three things set right just yet so you think you're fucking up the cast when in reality the problem arose before ths cast started

Speaking of which, what's the best way to kill bigger fish? I normally just used a fillet knife toe cut the head off anything I have caught, which I managed to do in this case as well, but this is the first time I have caught something this big and it was fairly tough to do with my knife.

Because:
1. The farm fish is heavy metal and disease free
2. You aren't killing an apex predator that there are very few of in any given body of water and even less of decent size. It's a game fish, let it go for someone else to catch it when it's 8 pounds.

If it were something like a perch or sunfish I could understand but not a 7.5lb pike
>>
>>1093998
The government here has been monitoring mercury levels in freshwater since the 70s, and have published information on safe consumption levels for different species and different bodies of water. They also have recommended harvesting practices to keep the fishery healthy. I'm following all of those guidelines.

There is no shortage of pike this size in northern Canada. I have hooked fish at least this size almost every time I have been out since July; often more than once in a session. This is just the first time I have had the appropriate setup to land the fish.

And frankly, I disagree with fishing as a sport, hence why I eat everything I catch. The only fish I release are the ones that aren't a suitable size for harvesting.
