Seems pretty cool actually. You're cruising around, and you find a little painted rock, and you know another person has been where you are, walking the same trail you are, and wanted to leave you a gift to let you know you aren't alone.


I mean, it beats some dude writing "[name] was here" on a tree with spray paint or starting a fire or something lame like that which wrecks the environment.


As far as odd trends go, leaving painted rocks is one of the few I can get behind.

Silly trend, though. They're doing it on my campus which I think is fine and cute. But not in the woods. The woods should just be the woods. You shouldn't feel welcomed when you're alone in the woods. You shouldn't be reminded of the civilization you just came from.
Of course this is a spectrum, I'm not trying to say that a day hike trail should have risk of bear attack. But all in all, the only things you should leave are footprints. Leave the "happiness bringing" to the woods and those paid to take care of it.

Cairns actually have a purpose to mark trails and other landmarks to be able to navigate in the wilderness. When people start building cairns just to post on instagram and not taking them down once they are done taking photos, it messes with other cairns and can cause hikers to get disoriented out in the wilderness
