Wondering if anybody has experience using composting toilets? More specifically, installation, odor issues, disposal and compost quality techniques. Please no memes.
>>621040
why not just set up a septic tank?
how does the compost get down there ?
Most geochaches are composting but people dont realize it yet.
I finally got my Darche Ranger Solo.
I just had my first go at rolling it up. Looks like shit.
Do any of you gents have any tricks? I figure I'll just need to have a few more tries at it, but this time it looks not at all as nice as the pictures on the internet.
>>620988
If you're rolling it up with bedding inside it'll look chunkier, so long as you can roll the cunt up and gets the straps around it that's all that matters
>>620992
This is what I'm aiming for.
>>620994
That's without bedding for sure, if you want it that compact replace the mattress with an inflatable 4WD one
Unpopular opinions and gear choices.
I prefer corona saws to bahco.
I like moras but will never carry one because I would not trust my life to it.
I like quality tomahawks Inna woods over hatchets
I use bank line instead of paracord
>>620921
would be interested in trying a corona but availability here in the uk sucks sucks, about the only readily availabe folding saws froma hardware store are shitty unbranded ones or are fiskars, you've got to shop around for a bacho- the closest place I know shop wise where you can walk in and buy one is like 70 miles away
>>620921
>I would not trust my life to it.
Because of the plastic grips?
well,
stickers came in. I thought I'd put the pic up and get feedback as a start. If there's a decent interest we can order some up. I think I may have gone too small on them. I'd think 0.5 inch on the circular ones and maybe an inch more on the shield ones.
let me know what your thoughts are an if interested how many of each. It's a starting point.
>>620885
I like them!
oh yeah,
so the bear circle one on the left is one of the original stickers from the first patch run. I'm thinking to get the size larger for consistency.
The printing quality was on par in this run. I'd guage it as semi-professional looking. I don't like that I can see the printer's dots but even the original run stickers had that going on so it seems unavoidable. Download the pic above and view it zoomed and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I want the bear with the knife
So my dad introduced me to fly fishing and I'm hooked, planning on getting a good rod, I've been told Fenwick is one of the best. Advice?
>>620753
Reddington. Good rods at reasonable prices. What kinda fishing will you be doing? Dry fly? Nymphing? Using big streamers? This will determine what WT rod you need. A good all around setup is a 9 ft 6wt with a weight foward floating flyline.
>>620758
I'm actually pretty new to it so I'm not familiar with the terminology yet, the fly I have been using is small with hairs, and is meant to sink, have only caught salmon with it.
>>620753
Dry flying is best flying
Hey /out/, im in need of a new knife. Hopefully staying under 50$. Im leaning towards pic related. Thoughts? Suggestions?
>>620732
Go for it. My stainless steel Mora is my most used fixed blade knife. They come really sharp and work great.
Got that exact knife in the mail the other day, seems great but mine came with a shit grind (fingers brushing to check visibly rolled edge lol). After a bit of work sharpening and testing seems to hold well enough, sheath is great, go for it and enjoy.
>>620732
Mora is one of the best you can get for the money.
Make sure to keep it clean though , I know mine tries to corrode any chance it gets.
Also, for the love of god, keep the original scandi grind. When you're sharpening lay it flat along the entire edge. I've seen a good many flat ground knives ruined by incorrect sharpening.
Is old west clothing functional for being out? Wool is still used today, because a synthetic alternative doesn't really exist. Would it still make sense to wear this type of clothing /out/?
Why wouldn't you just get modern wool clothes?
>>620637
I totally could, but I think it would be too much fun to dress like OP's pic. Cross off the hat and it more or less just looks like normal clothing.
From what I've seen, old west stuff is twice the weight and half as functional as synthetics, though they're much nicer to look at and probably more cosy to wear.
Bit of a stretch here I'm sure. I'm looking for a sleeping bag with a low profile when rolled up that can take temperatures under 30 degrees and doesn't destroy a bank account.
Any suggestions?
It doesn't even have to be a sleeping bag but a "system" of sorts for a 1 person tent that doesn't consume a bunch of room on/in my pack.
I have a sleeping bag I've had for a while someone gave me for free but even in a compression pack it's too large.
>packable
>sub 30 degrees
Down
>doesn't break the bank
Second hand/used
>>620500
A sleeping bag can be any 2 of the following 3 things. It CANNOT be all 3. Sorry.
Light/compact
Warm
Cheap
>>620500
>Bit of a stretch here I'm sure. I'm looking for a sleeping bag with a low profile when rolled up that can take temperatures under 30 degrees
Down.
> and doesn't destroy a bank account.
Oh. Well 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
Hey guys I posted this on /ck/ with no success. I've got about 5lb of hind quarters from young does that I'm cunning for chili. Looking for recipes that do not involve noodles or corn and are mild (or can be adjusted) on the heat scale.
Picture unrelated.
>>620404
You want to ask over in /ck/, the kids here only know how to make instant ramen...
>>620444
Nice trips. I already posted in /ck/ and this is how it's turning out >>7019857
We had a decent venison thread, but since /out/ is so slow and this is specific to chili I made a new one.
>>620404
I've never used a recipe for chili in my life, just put the stuff you like in a pot (and leave out the stuff you don't) and cook it and season to taste. Then again I've never cooked venison so maybe it does need extra fat like the guy said.
Which pack in /out/s oppinion is better?
not the packs themselves but more the style and type difference.
I long for a condor II but can't afford one just yet however the only packs anyone in Australia sells is the type on the left, why is this? You can get surplus gear but its worn to shit most of the time and surplus stores give no shits about anything being quality.
Whats your opinion and explain.
The type on the left is better for me. I don't need indestructible heavy fabric nor PALS for any of the things I'm doing.
I'd say most people going /out/ are in a similar situation and the type on the right gets the majority of its sales from people who pretend they are in the military. If anyone disagrees, let me know why.
I got my large alice pack in Aus with a decent frame and no real defects (bag had a few minor repairs to it, frame was in fine condition and ended up spray painting it dull black), ended up purchasing a woodland camo medium without anything wrong with it
>>620379
Depends what you want it for.
>Tall pack good for backpacking, comfortable, good waist strap.
>Wide pack good for combat. Better peripheral vision, doesn't knock against helmet, narrow waist strap doesn't get in way of battle belt, easier to remove if getting shot at.
In short, you're in Aussie, land with highest number of serial killers/backpacker murderers in the world and you can't carry a gun. Go with an Alice pack.
Are the scottish hilghlands worth it? Would love to hear stories from you guys
Yeah they are, I Love the highlands and Woolf reccomend that you summit Ben Nevis in summer and IF you have the training summit it in winter.
Enjoy the methlabs

>Are the scottish hilghlands worth it?
Well, Hadrian didn't think so and neither did The Longshanks soooo idunno
Are there any Eagle Scouts here?
>What your favorite trip/activity you did as a scout?
Mine was sailing off the coast of pic related.
>What was your Eagle project?
I built picnic tables for a local state park.
January 2015
>Favorite activity
Just hiking all over the mountains with the bros
>Project
Built a display case for a local elementary school. That shit turned out nice but woodworking is hard to do for an eagle project.
Sea base
Project- marked the Cherokee trail in Wyoming
2012 Eagle
>favorite activity
My troop would do a 120 mile biking campout over a week every other year along the old C&O canal, beautiful forests and very relaxing
>eagle project
Food drive for the Salvation Army. I thought rich people would donate more; I was wrong
Pic related, it's the C&O canal
What would /out/ do if you met these guys?

With a long weekend coming up they will want to go hide in on private land.

Long weekend?
I was thinking of the idea of making a kind of organization between /out/ and /k/ for the purpose of teaching people proper outdoor and survival skills, stuff like fishing and hunting, alongside other stuff like shooting sports.
Not sure about what you guys really do, but /k/ has regular meet ups we call Nuggetfests, alongside other things people organize and they go well, I think with proper planning this could be a thing that would be fun.
What would you think of an /out/door /k/lub?
>>618663
I always thought it'd be cool if there were /out/posts in places for that sort of purpose.
And what is done at these so called nuggetfests? Are smores involved?
I guess this isn't what you're talking about but you made me think of it:
There's all these survival shows like Ray's and Bear's, right? That's probably hundreds of hours of TV.
What if anon watched this stuff and when they are teaching something useful we write down the time and what it is they're doing?
Then if you want to know how to do something you'll see it's on the list: Dave does it in 1x05 at 20:20, Les did it at 2x06 at 10:10 etc.
So... Drove 10 hours and did a small section of the AT in the GSM. Dumbass me didn't take a footprint for my sleeping pad. Poked a hole in it the first night at a shelter. Slept flat on the ground/slabs the whole week. Not miserable, but wasn't the best. Got some of that tenacious tape at an outfitter the last day we were there.... How do you properly fix on? I will be buying a thermarest patch kit this week.
The tenacious tape held up the first night but I suspect a second leak. With these, can you really just put soapy water on them or dunk them under water over pressure and see the air bubbles? Over the years I have done that with inflatable air mattresses. With this i am worried about getting the inside wet and getting mildew. Too damp and cold now to proper air dry outside. Thanks!
>>618286
I honestly can't tell what's going on with the hole because the photo is so shitty. wader repair stuff will seal small holes well.
>>619797
Just a pic of the pad, small hole with some tenacious tape on it. I called cascade and asked. I have some real repair kits coming in. Will have to dunk it, find the other holes, mark them. Let it dry, and then apply a cloth patch.
