Food tips for backpacking meals requested.
Whenever I go out I freeze milk and put it in my pack with my food.
This I wrap with any clothing or other cloth and put in the center of my pack. If its not too hot this will keep everything cold for several days. The milk is handy for coffee or pancakes or other things you might cook on the trail.
Remember , you can freeze milk but not half and half.
What do you eat while /out/?

OP bumping with slab apricots from trader joes.
Holy shit these things are delicious and will get you through a morning hike.
MIx them in with steel cut oats and some milk f
>>

A handful of dried apricots always gives me the shits. I prefer firm stools when out, because I don't have to pack as much TP. Just a thing to keep in mind for anyone who plans on just taking these and peanuts. Also, almonds are great as a trail food, but you've got to keep the amount fairly low. Eating too many almonds will result in cyanide poisoning. Its not enough to suicide, mind you, just makes for an awful migraine.

Anyone /sweden/ here? I'm planning a trip to Stockholm next year and I'm looking for some trails to walk (partially). Currently looking at Sörmlandsleden, Upplandsleden or Roslagsleden. All 3 are relatively close to Stockholm I think?

Also, is it worth going all the way north just to do Kungsleden?

I'll be going July/August/September by the way.

My fellow axe wielding sc/out/s. I see so many different size handles and heads out there and so many preferences I just had to ask. What length handle do you prefer and why? I prefer a 26"(give or take) for the leverage. What about you?
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>634613
what a retarded question...
handle length and head size should be adjusted to your proportions and the task.

one school says for general purpose axe you should have one that reaches from your armpit to your palm preferably a carpenters style good for both whittling and cutting. but that is way too large for hiking and way too small for felling or serious splitting.
>>
>>634640
Y-you dont split with an axe. You split with a maul...

26 inches is my upper limit. After that fitting it on an atv or motorcycle becomes kinda akward.
>>
>>634653
i don't have any mauls or axes
all i got is a hatchet and i split with that. it splits nice.

If I'm hiking all my friends drink bourbon (ky thing), but I'm a beer drinker, so most every weekend I load up the atv with a 30 pack and hit the hills with around 5 of my buddies. Always run into people doing the same. Get real wild then build a fire and cook some elegant wilderness meal to get sobered up, then head on in or stretch a tarp out and go to bed.
>>
If i'm on a longer hike i would fill a little whisky/rum in a plastic bottle. Otherwise i would use a metal container. It warms so nicly.

Making some pemmican to eat during the day on a long backpacking trip. I plan on having freezedried meals for breakfast and dinner, so I'm not making this for historical reasons or anything, simply a way to have some dense calories to wolf down for cheap during the day.

A few questions since there is a ton of retarded information out there, and also some very good information.

One of the better guides I read said to use a dehydrator and don't go above 120*F since it will make the meat unsuitable. Not entirely sure what that is supposed to mean since he doesn't explain it. I would imagine it would destroy some of the protein being cooked at higher temperatures and that's what he's getting at, but I am not knowledgeable in this area.

traditionaltx.us/images/PEMMICAN.pdf

Anybody have experience drying the meat out at temperatures exceeding that? I'm mainly wondering since the lowest setting on my oven is 170*F.

I don't plan on adding berries this batch, but I think some dried chili peppers might not be a bad idea next batch when I can make it with a dehydrator.

How hard is it to go from beginner archery to being able to hit a rabbit?
Ive acquired three bows, 1 fiberglass shortbow and 2 wooden longbows. Having never shot a bow before, i would love to be able to hunt with one, though i understand that goal is very ambitious.
In ny area we only really have rabbits, coyotes, bobcats, a small handful of deer that i dont think we can hunt, and some wild pigs if you can find them.
Ideally i would be able to hone the skill to the point of hunting rabbits (jack rabbit has no season, others do) so i have a few questions

>where can i buy cheap practice arrows?
>would the shit fiberglass one be able to kill a rabbit?
>do i NEED a real bowstring?
One of the wooden ones is strung with kevlar cord
>should i buy small game arrowheads or try to retrieve arrows

/k/ might be able to help

I think with rabbits and other small game the idea is to stun them with blunt tips.

You'd probably also need to be prepared to hit a moving target. It's not impossible as I've seen people shoot pheasant out of the air with bows.

People hunt everything with bows. There's even tips for turkey.

I think it all boils down to practice.
>>
>>634925
> do I NEED a real bowstring

No, no you don't. Imaginary bowstrings will suffice.

Depends really. You can get tips like the one in pic related or some type of field points. While you can try to shoot them on the move I generally just creep close enough while they are just standing there and shoot. You can get close enough to do so before they run off. You just need to practice either way of how you want to hunt.

Dear /out/
We got our first snow in Michigan and I don't want to look like a nig nog and get a pair of Timberland boots
What coats/boots do you guys recommend for cold, slippery weather?
Also has anyone had any experience with these shoes? Worth or not worth?

Can't tell you the brand, but still use my Army issued cold weather boots.
Waterproofed leather, goretex lined, vibram soles.

Prolly can snag some from a surplus store for a decent price and they've lasted me close to a decade of western NY winters.

"Coat" --> Wool base, down/fleece middle layer, and a softshell

For boots I like La Sportiva, but you should just go to a store and buy the most comfortable boots in your price range. Also look into buying some crampons if your worried about slipping while /out/.

Would you hike with a robotic companion? It could carry your pack and be outfitted with sensors that allow it to detect dangerous animals long before you do. How about a drone that would silently watch over you from above so you still get the solitude of hiking alone but still have the safety of a robotic guardian watching over you? Obviously anything noisy like a quadcopter would be out maybe something that silently flies like a bird could be developed.

For Americans, yes. Yuros love it because shitty plastic knives are all their governments let them have. Get a custom made knife if you've got the money. Don't baton your knife that's retarded. gransfors bruks axes are top tier. I don't know anything about portable saws, I'd assume whatever the most popular namebrand one is is pretty decent.
