What is the point of this thread?
Watching cast away.
Can we just talk about how Tom Hanks is a fucking retard in this movie?
>Spends time throwing coconuts at a flat wall.
>Dosn't just loot the packages for things that might actually save his life like food sent by people to relative or clothes for the nights.
>Wastes his fucking time trying to row out to a boat at least 4 hours after he sees it in a tiny life raft and with a shitty paddle.
I could come with more reasons but I'm too fucking lazy.
>washes up in a huge life raft
>doesn't use it to collect rainwater
>doesn't use it as a sun shelter
>doesn't fashion a crude blowup doll for lonely nights
>Can we just talk about how Tom Hanks is a fucking retard in this movie?
>not realizing the entire point of the movie was how soft and oblivious he was when thrown into that situation

first and foremost, use your head.
small mistakes can grow.
Going fishing tomorrow on the Surfside pier in Myrtle Beach south carolina tomorrow. I hope to catch some spanish mackeral and will be using all the gotcha plugs and spoons I own to that end. I'm also taking some friends who have never fished saltwater before, and only rarely fish freshwater, so I'm setting them up with some bottom rigs with shrimp. I figure one of us will find out what's biting.
Pier/surf fishing thread? Pier/surf fishing thread.
Btw, got waaaay too close to a shark on a sandbar about 300 yards from shore while surf fishing last weekend, so it will be nice to fish without such concerns plaguing me!
once my neighbour's cat got inside my house. my dog wanted to kill it
>>775966
You coulda just said "bump". I am stoked at all the fishing threads however.
>>775390
I'm about to go grab a big Penn Fierce combo from Bass Pro and start getting out to the pier at 4am when there aren't so many people around.
When rigging the shrimp on the bottom, how do you set it up? The couple times I did the pier, I just ended up using big pyramid weights and some frozen squid but no real luck. Are shrimp much better?
There is also a spot where I can fish from at an inlet into the intercoastal. On the south side of the inlet, just east of the bridge in the pic. But last time I went there, the tide was coming in and even with 3oz weights, the shit was getting dragged into the rocks. Is it worth fishing there? And whay do you think would be the best way to go about it as far as bait, rigs, and tide?

It needs to be Friday already so I can fish all day. I think I should quit my job and try to work on a fishing charter.

Cutest fish is goblin shark and panda cory.

You fish that from shore at all? That would scare the hell out of me.

Anyone have any close encounters with predators in the wild when you weren't carrying?
>saw a wolf on a trail when I was walking my dog. Dog was going nuts barking, wolf just stared at us for half a minute or so and moved on. Was about 25 feet in front of us.
>was biking on the highway when a bear came charging out of the woods right beside me. I thought it was chasing me and I almost pissed myself. It turned around though went back in the woods.
Anyone been close to a cougar in the wild?
Story Time:
>Moose hunt got me a big bull
>Spend the night out with my favorite dog
>Night comes and I can't make it out in time
>Set up camp for the night make a fire
>Up in the Yukon
>2am or so grizzly comes
>Dog goes mad grizzly stands up
>Grizzly and dog both charge eachother
>Grizzly terribly harms my dog, ripped ear no back leg cuts bites flesh missing
>I shoot grizzly and skin it in the morning
> Still 2:30am or so
> Dog is dying forced to put her down with a 45 handgun to the skull
>I cry about it all night
>Take her body with me and the bear skin/head
>Removed her front paw and preserved it and now I wear it.
> Bear skull is on my wall.
> Loved my dog and will forever be happy and loving that she gave her life for me.
> Had pups so I know have 4 dogs.
> Treat them well.
Story time again:
>Working the trap line while I was a child my job was checking the close ones around base camp
>Taking home a couple martin as I couldn't carry much at the time
> 8 years old if that
> Carrying a 22 for protection
> I see a wolf tearing at one of my traps I set with a wolverine in it that was killed (wrong trap I used a 440 instead of a leg hold I was going after a annoying animal can't remember what)
> I pull my firearm out and shoot up in the air
> Wolf looks at me and proceeds to move forward
> I doubt to attack
> I fire 5 rounds into it in about 5 seconds
> Father and mother come running out with a shotgun thinking I am getting mauled
> Dead wolf is dead and we take it home and manage to sew the fur
> Get about 3/4 normal price on the fur
> No more wolfie
Story time again again:
> Working the trap line while I was a kid checking the lines around the base camp
> about 8 am or so
> Go check the close beaver traps near the base of the pound (castor baited 440 traps)
> carrying my 22
> 9-10 years old or so
> Pull beavers out and reset the traps drag the beavers to my sled and walk my dog back with him carrying them home.
> Wolverine comes out of nowhere hissing and is not very happy
> Wolverine proceeds to start attacking my dog (bowbou)
> I shoot the wolverine
> Its dead instantly
> Radio in my father to come and get everything explain to him
> Comes picks up my dog and everything
> I am worried about bowbou
> Father uses some dissolving stitches on the wounds and we disinfect her wounds
> 3-4 weeks later bowbou is good as new and we are rocking the traps again.
I'll be doing a lot of backpacking this summer and I like to bring chicken jerky. But store-bought is expensive so I want to make my own. Does anybody have experience with this? Does home-made jerky last long? Can anybody recommend a dehydrator that's not too expensive? Any other tips on homemade jerky would be appreciated too, thanks.
>>768856
chicken?
a cheap option is to use ground beef formed into strips/patties; got a cheap dehydrator at a garage sale, they're the kind of thing people use a few times then don't want to justify keeping
I've just let it sit for 12-24hrs with seasoning and curing salt, never had any go bad....but that's cause I ended up eating it
>>768856
Don't use ground beef. That's absolutely fucking retarded. Eye of bottom or basically any cheap cut of meat does well. I have a Hamilton Beach dehydrator and it's great. I've used it almost every day for the past year and I wish I had bought one sooner. You can dehydrate veggies, fruit, herbs, soup, pemmican, and fruit leather aka fruit roll ups. Home made beef jerky lasts for a very long time if stored properly. I'd wager years.
>>768985
it's absofuckintootley not
Have any of you come across these stupid things on hikes? There's a whole trend online with people stacking rocks for "meditation" and get this, there are professional stone stackers.
I've tried telling people to stop doing this, but just get met with "durr the trails ruin nature there's nothing bad about stacking rocks!" Like, people get vehemently defensive about them.
What are your thoughts, /out/?
>>760108
What the fuck? Hope you kicked them op
Here comes the trigger train
>>760114
Of course. Unfortunately those things are fucking hydras, kick one down and two more spring up somewhere else in the world.
what's your favourite rifle to take /out/?
Tough choice but I'd say my SKS, fun to shoot and provides animal protection if needed
.50 cal anti-materiel, in case of deathclaws.
>>731453
That's a tough call anon.
I don't really enjoy target shooting in the bush/outside of a range, but my Mossberg 500 has felled many a grouse and hare. It's a workhorse that is with me for about 1/2 the year. I'd give it the nod, but my Winchester 70 in .30-06 is what I really look forward to packing. Goddamn I can't wait for September.
Any tips on making my own bike and where to buy parts? Just looking for something casual.
>>776245
Coming from a former BMX rider, it's going to get expensive doing that. Better to buy a complete with a decent frame and upgrade stuff as you see fit.
Also,
>>>/n/
>>776265
about how much? I was under the impression buying parts and making one yourself was a lot cheaper.
>>776266
Idk what it will be like for a fixie or road bike, but with BMX, you could spend $700 on a really nice complete bike. To build almost the same bike using individual parts at full retail, you will probably end up spending like $1100-$1400.
A BMX mailorder company called DansComp used to sell a kit with everything besides the frame so you could buy your own frame and get the kit for another $300-$500, but a lot of the major parts were mediocre in the kit and you can't really get specific sizes you want.
Just remember, those $10 bearings and cables start to add up real quick.
I mean maybe you could find a cheap used bike with shitty wheels and a couple broken things but a frame you like, then order some of the major parts like a set of wheels, good cranks, fresh grips and tires, and build it up while still having lots of the small parts like the headset and seat post that are still good from the old bike. That would be the cheapest if you really want to build it up.
This guy found its way into my garden somehow, thinking of keeping it

The CRKT C/K Dragon
It's a nice knoife, don't get me wrong. And I got it on clearance for <$30 so whatever. But I'm not really a collector and the Dragon is too big for an EDC on my belt. And then I thought about using it as a tackle bag knife, but I think I prefer the Kershaw I have since the blade is better for chopping.
>>775967
Don't lie, that is dope
>>775964
Sorry, that was a shitty pic
Here it is next to the little EDC SPEW (no ragrets on that one even at full price) and the $17 Kershaw which I keep in my tackle bag.
Hey ya'll!
I am aware it isn't the best idea to eat fish from dirty water.
Is this the case for frog legs?
I'm looking to catch a few to eat some fresh frog legs but I want to make sure frogs don't get contaminated from dirty water.
The place where I plan to catch them has some very murky water and many of the fish I catch in those water have those black spot parasites in em'
Any experience with frog legs and frog hunting?
