Yes clouds of them hover over shorelines for a few days. When I got here there were none, then about a week ago they started up, peaking on Thursday. They are almost gone now.

Unless you're filtering for multiple people those sawyer minis are the best. I bring a little adapter with mine so I can clean it without bringing the giant syringe. Like with any mechanical filter, don't rely on it below freezing.

Clothes designed for going out are often designed to be lightweight. Unfortunately it is expensive. My rain jacket is ultralight und ultraexpensive, but I carry it in my backpack most of the time. So I go with my 248g waterproof jacket, instead of the cheaper one I have, that weighs around 1000g. Thats more than half a kilo less weight, on a single piece of gear.
Merino underwear and shirts cost a fortune, but the quality is so much better than regular cotton shirts.

But I am no bushcrafter, I go trekking and sleep in a tent. I don't do ultralight trekking but I enjoy some of the gear. If I had to cut down trees and do other bushcrafting stuff I would buy work wear.

hemostatic stuff, bandages, sterile gauze, antibacterial stuff, things to keep wounds closed, medications for various things, leeches, lobotomy needle

I dont make mine. Go to a school bus at night and take the first aid kit from behind the driver seat. Has everything you will need sometimes even an epipen which is nice for trauma. School buses are always unlocked the door just slides open. Dont worry, they just get replaced upon safety inspection so no harm done by you getting a free quality med kit.

I chose the Bushnell Headlamp. I don't really have use for a bluetooth speaker while outdoors, and the CRKT Viva just looks like a bottle-opener.

Hopefully the prizes next week will be a bit better.

It's really up to preference. Do you want to conceal it? Do you need it to possibly defend against large animals like bears? I would go with a .45 to be safe. I like revolvers because they're less tacticool and nothing beats them for reliability.

As for animals, only use your gun as a last resort. You should carry bear spray which works better than a firearm anyways. No need to kill an animal for being an animal no matter how aggressive it is. If the bear spray fails (it won't) then resort to the firearm.

I just finished a 2 week trip on the Kenai Pennisula doing a couple short backpacking trips and lots of day hikes.

We did not see a sinlge bear or have any trouble with any people. In fact we hardly saw people on the trails, except near Anchorage and everyone was nice as fuck. At a campground north of Seward a bear hunter said he was having a hard time finding bears beacuse most were within the city limits looking for food this time of year.

I chose not to bring my revolver and just had bear spray, which we didn't need. I own several guns and rarely bring any while /out/, most animals/people near me can be fended off with a big stick.

I always keep a firearm on me out in the woods, less about bears and more just in case I run into any violent methheads which is honestly far more likely of a scenario than a bear/animal attack. Still, I use a 10mm Glock 29 since it does have the power to take down black bear.

In AK you're dealing with grizzlies so I'd probably recommend a good bear spray and at least a .44 mag revolver.
