Carving General:
post
tools, finished work, works in progress, ideas, questions and basically anything related to carving.

here some of my more recent work, really need to pretty up that kuksa, the tea spoon turnt out pretty good if i do say so myself

I have a basic set of Flexcut carving knives, and that + sandpaper are the only tools I use at the moment. I have a set of small gouges but they came from the store with terrible edges on them and I need to learn how to sharpen them properly before I can see doing anything with them.

I carve all sorts of wood as I am still learning its attributes. I've tried cedar, alder, birch, maple, hemlock, fir, basswood, and elm so far. The hardwoods are my favorite.

I've only been carving for about a year, producing mainly Christmas ornaments as I am planning on selling them at a local craft fair next weekend. Due to the fact that I am still learning, I have been sanding and painting my work because I'm not able to carve enough detail yet.

Apologies for not having any pictures to post at this moment. I will try to come back later with some.
>>
Some questions for posters to answer:

What tools do you use?
What woods do you prefer to work with?
What sorts of things do you carve?
How did you pick up the hobby?

And, of course, post some pics of your work!

Eurofag here. Tell me about the Great Lakes. When I see them on a world map I think of them kind of like the Caspian sea or even Baltic sea. Is there shipping on them? What about going /out/ on the lakes?
118 posts and 30 images submitted.
>>
>>895385
There's a ton of shipping on them, hell if your country isn't landlocked I guarantee that a boat from it has come up the St. Lawrence. I live at the western most tip of Lake Superior and the possibilities of doing /out/ activities is pretty much endless. Canoeing, fishing, sailing, even surfing.
>>

Do they freeze over in the winter?
>>
I'm in NJ and don't know much about them either. I know people that go to Ontario for some monster lake trout but we mostly just go to the shore for water related sports.

what do you think of people that walk around innawoods with $5,000 dollars worth of gear on their dainty bodies?

I have one of their rain jackets and a couple pairs of their pants and they're some pretty tough stuff and were well worth the money

What can I say, it's unfortunate that people are spending more than necessary, and $5,000 dollars is a lot of money.

My average hunting load out is probably around that. Rifle plus scope alone is 2 grand.

My hiking/camping set up probably 2500 without the clothes I'd wear.

They are really only dangerous if you have dogs with you. They might come to your camp and dig around looking for food but other than that not much to worry about.

I knife hunt them every year and it's always a good time.

Is it in standard 1oz bars or do you favor a smaller denomination?

For those of you who don't know, in an apocalypse, gold will be the most likely currency as it is extremely rare and cannot be replicated.

I would prefer to carry a few bars if I had the money.
>>

Also because paper money becomes worthless if the institution (government) guaranteeing its value collapses, while gold is physical and eternal (barring nuclear transmutation).

Sup /out/

/k/ here, I have very little gear, all left over from my BSA 5 years ago.

I'd like to get set up with some starter gear to go solo-camping with. Nothing that expensive, I don't even know if I'll like solo camping for 1-2 nights since im a huge night pussy, but I'll have a gun so that will help me sleep.

Things I have:
>GPS
>Basic survival sense
>compass
>Guns
>Good phone battery
>eneloop AAs
>Good Flashlight (these here are super on sale, are any worth it tho? https://www.amazon.com/CVLIFE/b/ref=bl_dp_s_web_6263745011?ie=UTF8&node=6263745011&field-lbr_brands_browse-bin=CVLIFE

I'm looking for
>one man tent (mine was destroyed when my mom lent it to some fucks)
>water bottle
>boots (Wisconsin winter)
>axe (are saws any useful?)
>Large pack (I have a huge framed one, but is that too much for 1-2 days?)
>water bottle (should I bring all my water, or use filters?
>Good hiking jacket (I'm good at layering)
>Good firestarter (more of a what do you prefer thing)
>good mess kit
>Good small cooking pan for a fire (or should I use a mini-stove?)

I'm sorry I'm so out of the loop, asking for so, I should have done a lot more research leading up to the biggest sale time of the year, but I fucked up. Let me know if you have any suggestions for anything, or if you just want to share your favorite.

A knife too, but im looking at the active threads now
>>
>>898546
if you don't know if you will like it, I would advise against buying all that shit. you can borrow a tent or buy a cheap one and try it out in a state park.

something you didn't mention was sleeping bag. if you are doing this in winter in wisconsin you will probably need a good sleeping bag.
>>
>>898548
>>898546
What I should have said is that I'm going to use much of this for camping with friendos as well.

So I'll hold off on buying a one man tent, but I still need a knife, axe, multitool, firestarter, water bottle, boots, shovel, and 30L+ backpack.

I'm taking stock of the gear I have right now, and I'll post that soon. I have at least two sub-freezing sleeping bags, but I was thinking of getting something less bulky.

Have you ever thought about introducing wildlife?

Im living on 100 acres and beyond that is crown land. I plan to have a hobby farm that will feed me 90% of my calories... not bothering with the strict offgrid pipedream.
Only keeping to local species lets say I introduce flocks of partridge to the property... always have lots of seed all over the place, but just let them do their own thing and hunt them like fair game.

besides that...think about more creatures... boars or turkeys.... wolves are native to this area but were hunted during a cull in the 1800s
how irresponsible would reintroducing wolves be ... Its cool to think about.. if it werent illegal it would an interesting project

You should introduce wild MGTOWs and see how they fare with the partridges
>>
>>898532
The partridges would overpower the MGTOWs and run them off. MGTOWs are notoriously bad at life, otherwise they'd be functional members of society instead of the whiny little kissless faggots they are.
>>
>>898524

I strongly urge you to not introduce non-native species. Reintroducing exterpated species would be really cool but the chance that they would fare well is slim. Odds are that the things that originally drove them away are still there.

Maybe /out/ will better understand me than /k/

Go from one ar15 company to another. Reasons were I felt my old boss had poor character and didn't treat customers with dignity. Hear new boss talk about customers and realized I fucked up in picking my new employer. Realized I gotta watch out for my manager as his desire to suck the bosses cock is tremendous. Probably willing to take 80 gallons a minute of none stop cum. I'm 35, and it's very common for me to have bosses younger than I am that may never learn what dignity is all about.

My goals have changed in life on multiple occasions. Professionally. Now I'm thinking screw it....I'm 35. How many more years should I suffer at people's insanity of living everyday life. I need land. I need to live simple and happy. Who here shares my dream?
23 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I did that except i started by throwing all the bullshit out and never made myself a part of it.

Living /out/ is better than living /in/
Everyone on /k/ is right wing as fuck (or at least shitposts that way) and if you dont share the dream of working your life away to buy more expensive bullshit then you are a whiny liberal cuck bleeding out the vagina about whatever is wrong in your life. Cure it with more funz they say, worship the god emporer because elections only matter as far as gun rights. You should look at the nuggetfest pics before taking /k/s advice on anything.

Fuck all that. Go get some land and live how you want
>>
23 and I feel all too similar. life is too precious and short to not do what makes you happy. ive come to the conclusion that people are going to think I'm crazy for possibly throwing away a "successful" career to live the /out/ life I live. but I am damn happy with it, fuck what others think. It's never too late to change up your lifestyle.

I'm an inexperienced cityboy from europe and I am thinking about doing a Kayak tour down the Donau.

If it's feasable, how long would it take me to get to the black sea from viena?

Any paddlers could give some advice?

Please no bully.

You mean the Danube?

Actually, regardless of the river - if you're traveling from Vienne, Austria to the Black Sea you're in for a multi-week excursion. I mean just based on Google Maps I'm seeing it's ~500 miles from Vienne to the Black Sea if you travel a straight line, but this river winds and turns all over the place so your trip will be significantly longer than 500 miles.

You'd also be traveling across country boarders. I don't pay attention to world affairs so I don't know how kindly your neighboring countries will take to a foreign city boy.

Sorry, anon - based on your lack of experience and your self-declared "City Boy" status it doesn't look like this is feasible for you at this time.

well i would never go under serbia.
the people down there are actually worse than gypsies.

i guess it's called Danube. It's roughly 1000 miles and I'm guessing it might take me about 8 weeks.

I'm a German citizen so there wouldn't be many difficulties with visas and stuff in those countries.

Did a long distance hike in Scotland this summer. We had degradable soap with us (pic related) and washed our heads and armpits in streams every now and then and when the weather was decent we washed more thoroughly. Sometimes we washed our clothing in the streams and let it dry hanging from our backpacks.

Other than that having baselayer clothing made from wool really helps reduce the odor!
