Anyone have any experience with outdoors clubs?
They seem to be full of liberal hipsters and soccer moms who focus on biking and going on 3 mile walks around the local urban park with occasional hiking trips planned. But that might be a good place to start if I want to start to do more /out/ stuff. What I'm interested in doing eventually is rucking/backpacking, orienteering, hunting, multiday camping and survivalism, and I don't know if there are any clubs out there for that or I just have to find my own path.

i do not. unless boyscouts counts.
why cant you just start off doing /out/ stuff?
go to a local park (state, national, whatever is near you) and just hike one of the trails. its not like you have to be particularly fit or anything. just bring some water, and sit down when you get tired.

No experience with clubs but if you got at least one buddy who enjoys /out/ you can hold yourself down. I've done 10 mile hikes alone and getting the motivation to do so if you're not in good physical and more importantly mental shape is a bitch. On the other hand if you make plans a day or so in advance with your buddy you'll feel much more obligated to go. I did the same 10 mile hike yesterday in the rain with my long time /out/ buddy and was bretty neat.
I'd try to avoid casual gatherings if you can unless that's what you want you'll end up headed to touristy spots with little difficulty and lots of people.
>hiking club (@ work)
Basically the "core" regulars, typically the "facilitator" (or first alternate) picks a local hike and send email invitation to the email list. Every Wednesday after work.
>"adventure club"
Same usual suspects doing harder, more remote weekend hikes, fitness hikes and longer multinight overnights.
>kayak club
More formal internet group, but same idea. Less involving because I don't have interest in kayaking remote lakes with 20-40 other 'yakers.
You're given $10.000 and the task to spend it to travel on the road for as long as possible.
>what do you pack?
>where do you go?
>how do you spend the money?
>>901245
For as long a time as possible or for as long a distance as possible.
>>901248
Best time:distance ratio.

Is there a drug test involved?

Fucking troll, fuck off to /b/, mate.
Welp, cancelling my trip to NZ now

It looks inviting, did you put your dick in it?
Do you guys have a recommendation for a flashlight? I'm looking for something that runs on a single AA battery (probably Ultimate Lithium) with a variable brightness ring.
Why AA Lithium? It may not be used for years at a time and it has to survive cold winters. In case the AA does die, finding one in the middle of no where should be easier than CR2/CR123 cells.
The only one I could find was a Nitecore SRT3, but I have no idea if they are any good or if there are better options out there.

The 3-pack of LED Rayovacs
Or the 12-pack of little aluminum LED bullshits from Bass Pro for $9.97
I mean one of them should work when you need it, right?

ehhh, I was looking more on the quality side

what kind of shoes or boots do thru-hikers generally use?
and in trails such as pct and the at, are the trails marked on trees, is the road trampled and easy to walk on?
98% of thru hikers are using trail runners now. everyones feet are different, so it's hard to recommend a brand. The trails are marked on trees, rocks, posts. The PCT is graded for horses, cattle, pack mules, so it's very smooth and easy walking. The AT has a lot of bolder scrambling, rocky sections for miles, and can be brutal.
>>900743
Hikers use Altra trail runners and other brands. They are generally replaced with new shoes every 700 miles.
I hiked 80% of the PCT in sandals. Having stinky feet sucks, washing socks sucks, and not having room for your toes to naturally spread is unhealthy. Although I haven't tried them, I'd recommend Xero's or Chacos. Teva's and Luna's are not where it's at.
You'll find the PCT is like walking on a sidewalk. Since it's an equestrian trail, it's only graded to a maximum of something like 30 degrees the whole way. Even the snow covered parts are so trampled on that you cannot loose your way. In hind sight, I could have done the whole thing without a map, but that would have been extremely inconvenient for planning resupplies.
>trail runners
why though, they arent actually running are they?
Fags like you guys need to get drunk outside

Hello, I've been wondering which crystal is this? I found it in Visoko, Bosnia and Hercegovina when I went there with my family. Does anyone know which kind it is?
You may want to try /an/ too.
I'm not sure. Does that brown stuff wash off?
If not, is that brown section fully opaque if you put a flashlight behind it?
I was gonna say quartz but I've never seen it in a hex shape
Hi,
I am a bit of a shut-in, I really like investing and I am ok at it (nothing special), but I won't have to work a real job in my life.
Im slightly autistic, but my I do currently live with my dad. I love it, but he is starting to threaten me for not leaving the house...
We have about 60 acres of hills behind my house.
Can you reccommend something I can do that is semi-productive or productive that will take an 1 hour or more a couple times a week, to "get out of the house" I have no interest in working as a bagger for 10 an hour...
>>900637
in what way does he threaten you?
also archery is cheap and fun and you can eat what you kill
>>900637
go out and hike/camp those hills.
or get a job. There are plenty of low skill high pay jobs out there if you know where to look for them. You'll have money to spend on shit too.
To be honest though, if you have 60 acres of land and you're asking what you can do on it that's fun, then you're not really /out/ material.
yah...
Its not our land, its some an estates who lives 3 hours away and never visits it...
Ive hiked through it... been there done that...
What kind of jobs can you get paid a lot for little skill other than working for government?
Thinking about buying this here. Looks really great. What do you guys think? Anyone here got experience with it or other Millet jackets?
i tried looking for reviews, but there is almost nothing about this jacket, and little about millet that is not in french
>>900568
>looks really great
Whew.
>>900570
Millet is quality brand. It comes down to sizing, they produce for the french market, and their stuff does not fit lanklets well.
Millet & Mammut are great if you have normal build, Scandi brands are better if you are long and tall.
Only spend the dosh for a 3 layer membrane shell if you are really into snow fun, like ski touring or snow shoeing
I'd like to be /out/ but I have a pretty intense fear of ticks, not because of the ticks themselves, but because the extremely nasty diseases they can carry. I live near to a couple national forests but every time I think, "It would be nice to go camping", I think, "Yeah, but is it worth risking being sick for the rest of your life because you caught lyme disease?"
I read shit like
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_disease#Prognosis
>A meta-analysis published in 2005 found some patients with Lyme disease have fatigue, joint or muscle pain, and neurocognitive symptoms persisting for years, despite antibiotic treatment. Patients with late stage Lyme disease have been shown to experience a level of physical disability equivalent to that seen in congestive heart failure.
And it makes me want to never go outside again. Am I overreacting?
>>899635
I think you're overreacting a bit. There's a bunch of precautions you can take to avoid getting ticks, and it's not very likely you'll get Lyme.
I live in Florida and I hear people thinking similar thoughts with mosquitos and Zika. Yea it would suck if it happened but chances are you'll be fine.
Stop being a pussy
Yes you are overreacting
Unless you live in Vermont
Leaf Goose, is it /out/ approved?
>inb4 why do you need approbation from anonymous people on a rat testing lab
Nothing is /out/ approved.
>>899512
a fucking leaf
>>899358
man I bet that swamp sounds lucious during summer. and probably stinks like a proper Joisey swamp too

Post pictures you've taken while outdoors.
Just went here with my gf. We haven't had significant rainfall in Georgia in almost a month now -- a record. This bed was fully underwater in June.
