Hey guys. I feel really bad about today. I was hunting in the woods behind my property. I shot a deer in the spine and had to put him down 30 seconds later. I felt so bad. Has anybody had a similar experience, or felt remorse.?

If you don't feel remorseful then it probably means you're the 1% of the population that is a psychopath.

The feeling is normal. I hate when I have to kill a fish I cannot keep because a hook got stuck in its stomach.

Where is the best place in North America to move to to do /out/ stuff such as hoking, kayaking and bushcraft?
Cascadia looks pretty lush but it is so big and covers 2 countries and 9 states so picking one area is hard.

Basically anywhere you can do those hobby tier /out/ activities. If you moved to a real /out/ state and that's all you did, you would be laughed at everywhere you go.
>>

That said. Try a liberal state like Washington, Northern California, or Colorado.

I plan on hiking, kayaking, bush craft, raising a few animals, hunting, shooting, a few building projects, fishing and raising kids who can play in the woods. I have a profession that can do at home, what is wrong with finding a great place to do these hobbies?
What is the best state/province for this in the US and Canada?
>>885557
I don't mind liberal areas but Cali is too far, I would never consider living there.

Could work though. I found two fishin buddies here and have yet to abduct and rape any of them. But one is too old and the other is a girl so not really my cup of tea.

hi /out/. Im new to this board so dont kill me if this gets asked often.
As far as I understand its not legal to just go camping into the woods, make a fire and live there for a couple of days. You have to have a permission from the land owner, right?
But still, are there any places (ideally in Europe) where you could get away with such thing easily? or places where nobody really gives a fuck?
Or maybe there are forests wild and large enough that there is actually little to no chance of being found?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Yes, America.
>>
>>909545
I know in the states we can do this on most national forests and BLM land. We call it dispersed camping.

Not sure about Europe though. Maybe try looking up camping on crown land, or "freedom to roam". I think I might have read something about that.

You should really contact whoever manages the land in your area though and bounce these questions off of them.
>>
>>909606
I also should add that a lot of places may restrict your fire, and wood usage. So make sure you can get a list of dos and don't in case you end up on the wrong side of the law.

You could also try stealth camping illegally.

Anyone in /out/ work in natural resource management or forestry? I'm trying to get out of the medical field as a lab slave. I have GIS experience and statistics experience in addition to a Biology background. I'm picking up various books to get me started, but for anyone that works in these areas, what are the most important things I should learn? Are there any decent free resources online?

Taking a forest fire control class at my university. How hard is it to get hired as a wildland firefighter in CA?
>>
>>909847
It is pretty competitive, start calling random crews now, it might take a year or two before you even get anything but definitely worth it

https://www.reddit.com/r/forestry/comments/44ya8i/how_to_get_a_job_as_a_wildland_firefighter/

That thread has some pretty good info. But yeah look into the BLM, NPS, local crews, etc. Go all over. You need to talk to people before you'll get a job though, if they never heard of you they probably won't hire you.

Hi
I fell of a bike in forest and got badly bruised, lower backside of the ribcage. Went to the doctor, nothing is broken, but it hurts like hell. It hurts when there is a slightest tension on the muscle, when I touch it and when I sneeze or cough.

What are your experiences with injuries? How long do you take to recover? How can one make the recovering process easier?

Oh man OP, I'm sorry to hear that. Glad you saw the doc at least so you know your insides are ok. Hope you're feeling better soon!

As for me, I was playing in the woods with my brother when I was like 8 and her swung a branch at my face and it popped my eye out of the socket. I screamed in pain and he screamd in horror and I pushed it back in. My eye was scabby for days but I never even saw a doctor, my parents couldn't decide if they believed us or not.

Also noteworthy - when I was 12 or so I was building a tower in the woods and nailed-in supports as I got higher and higher. One day I was near the top and one of the supports I was standing on popped loose and I fell the whole way down the center and, miraculously, didn't hit any of the supports on the way down. Even more miraculously I didn't fall on any of the many fresh stumps I'd left underneath as I cut saplings down to make my tower. I didn't break anything, but I threw up all over myself and dragged myself home through the woods. No broken pelvis, but I had blunt trauma and the doc said if I develop a fever or the pain gets worse I should go straight to the ER.

Pics related.

P.S. you take care of yourself man!
>>
Thankfully I've never been too badly injured, but when I was around 16 I was once descending a section of trail in the hills around the place I grew up in. I was a few hours out, alone and it was starting to get dark. I had stayed out too long but figured I could get home in time. It had been raining a lot recently, and a stone I stepped on slipped out from under me and I fell and twisted my ankle extremely badly underneath my full body weight. Within half an hour it was badly bruised. The sun went down and a thunderstorm came in. I didn't have a raincoat or a torch because I was a dumb kid and just expected to go wandering in the hills for a day. It was a bloody miserable experience limping home in the dark and rain, took me nearly twice as long. Healed up fine within a couple of days, but now I'm extremely careful with my footing.
>>
>>909378
that shit sux. fallen off my bike many of times too. I've broken my ribs twice, and didn't go to the Dr. the second time because there's not much they can do (basically "here's some ibuprofen, don't re-injure yourself, avoid strenuous activities the next few weeks"). It's possible they didn't get a good x-ray or just didn't see a break despite there being one. Just take it easy and heal up quick anon.

Any bikers here?
I'm planning to cross the Alps next summer, then heading towards tuscany. One thing I'm not sure about yet is: How are the italians behaving against bikers? Similar aggressive as towards other car-drivers? Then: Would it be better to cross the tuscany on a MTB offroading, maybe camping, if it is possible in Italy) or is roadbiking better? Best time to visit the area?

I'm looking for some tips in general and on gear for a first time backpacking trip.
I have no gear whatsoever now. I'm planning on going to the pyrenees in april and south canada in summer.

This is what I've been looking at so far, I try to make it as cheap and light as possible, while making sure the gear is durable enough to survive the trip:

Karrimor Xilite Self inflating mat (+- 600 gr, 20 euros)
Karrimor Superlight 1 sleeping bag( +- 850 gr, emp range: 12"C to -8"C , 20 euros)
Karimor Bobcat 2 tent (+-2 kg, 54 euros)
Gelert Groundsheet (+-100 gr, 2 euros)
Gelert Cookset and burner (+- 1 kg, 20 euros)
You can find all these on http://www.gelert.com/
Does anyone know if this is crap or got any advice?
Ive also been looking at the quickhiker ultralight 2 of 150 euros, 1,9 kg. Ive seen some nice reviews.

I still have to find a proper backpack as well.

Ive seen great reviews on a similar construction which was about 50 euros.
>>
>>908445
That sleepingbag is gonna be way too cold for the pyrenees in april.
>>
>>908458
What should the comfort temp be like then? Cause I thought it should be around 5-10.

Something tells me they don't hang out in remote mountain huts in Andorra.
>>
I'd say it's perfectly safe, but leave a note explaining that you're returning for it. Sometimes people leave gear free for the taking at huts, and someone might be stupid enough to think your stuff is up for grabs.
You going to Andorra? Awesome, where exactly? All the huts I saw there were beautiful on the outside, shitholes on the inside.

Buy a bow, and prcatice with it at least one year before hunting.
Also, a good tip is going to the gym, bench press and military press will help you being accurate

Practice a lot before taking it /out/ because you'll hit jack shit otherwise.

Hey /out/,

I wanted to pick up traditional archery as a hobby and hopefully move on to bowhunting once I get good.
I've tried out a 45 lbs. recurve bow a couple of times and have been able to shoot with it but it feels a little bit too heavy for me still right now...
So I found a cheap PSE snake bow online but it maxes out at around 22 lbs.

So my question is, if I start practicing with a 22 lb rated bow will the muscles used in archery still develop?
22 lbs seems very light like I won't see any muscle development or strength build from using it over time to reach the 45 lbs draw weight.

>>
OP here,

This is the bow I am referring to:

http://www.basspro.com/PSE-Archery-Snake-Recurve-Bow/product/14102811283511/

Will this draw weight help me develop muscle strength to eventually pull 45 lbs comfortably?

If anyone has experience with this it would be greatly appreciated.

For a basic beginner bow, it should be pretty good. Anywhere in the 20-30 lbs range is pretty good for a beginner bow, and it will build up that muscle, especially if you practice often. I'd also recommend getting some surgical tubing and tying a knot into it, use it to practice your form. Practice it when you're waiting for something.

Speaking of, have you got someone to teach you?
