are there any people who live/work towards living on a homestead? how self sufficient are you? is it a nice fulfilling life? what do you live on?
t. someone who considers it for the future

I'm working towards it. My dad is retiring in a couple of years and they want to move and leave me the house and land.
It's exactly half an acre and already has a well for water.
>>886279
My parents were into it. I only lived the life style until I was 9 (father passed away, we had to move to town) it was amazing from what I can recall, we still have the land and all in the family.

You want the garden area fenced so you can let the chickens roam, but not be crapping on the backyard or patio- or running out the front driveway.
They'll eat caterpillars grasshoppers and such that would damage crops- no need for pesticides and lower feed costs.
Beehives are strictly based on surrounding area.
They'll travel up to 5+ miles a day to forrage. But if you're in the middle of a pine forest, there will be nothing for them to eat and the colony will be in poor health- just a single hive can have 50,000 bees easily, that would require 5 acres of flowers (whether that's weeds, wildflowers, fruit trees etc).
What books/genres/authors do you recommend for reading while out?
i just read the Silmarillion (boy was that a thick piece of toast to ingest) i thought it was great, but in all honesty, it doesnt come close to the effect The Hobbit had on me.

Inb4 people sperg out and start posting FM 21-76 and The SAS Survival Handbook.
I just finished The Road; it was pretty good but Jesus fuck, Cormac Mcarthy has no understanding of punctuation.
Free on-line in pdf. Getting tired of telling you loders.

I read Blood Meridian (again) during my last weekend trip. Something about it feels appropriate.
This is the first time I have been here but you guys seem to be the one to ask. My dad has a job in a shipping department and works outside in the cold and sometimes rain for the foreseeable future and wants clothing for Christmas to make that easier. Hes already just gotten some new cotton gloves I believe, and some kind of liner jacket. What are some other clothing or brands would you guys recommend for long term cold weather that you can still work in?
>>913435
Look at heated clothing. A vest or something might be good or maybe gloves.
>cotton for cold weather
Dear god why?
>>913435
Strongly recommend a good set of long johns, wool or synthetic (LL Bean makes a wool union suit with a thin cotton lining that's very warm and comfy, would highly recommend). A nice wool knit cap would be good too. If you wanna get him a good pair of work mittens on the cheap, Kinko axeman gloves are god-tier comfy.
>>913446
I was told long johns or thermal bottoms but I didnt know where to start brand wise. Someone else mentioned LL Bean and possible military surplus ones.

Old school sc/out/ fag here, looking for good companies to get old-fashioned gear for hunting, fishing, and camping from. So far I have Filson and LL Bean, but both are really damn expensive. Any other suggestions?
Your local college's cosplay club.

Wearing very heavy flannel shot by Field and Stream right now.
Also my Moose Creek' s and Mossyoak's do not suck numale proto balls.
>>913241
Not sure I've ever seen cosplay involving wool coats and waxed canvas rucks.
Can I just put beef in a box of salt to turn it into beef jerky, sorry I'm. Ew to this. I saw the stuff about putting it on a grill and put a fan in front of it. I'm wandering more about survival like I didn't have a fan and I was outside.
Pic unrelated and if anyone can comment about this now I'm thinking about buying it.
Salted beef is not jerky. even just sticking meat in a bunch of salt isn't salted meat. Jerky is meat that has been (optionally) marinated, and dried. In order to make salt meat, you need to go through multiple steps of brining and aging. if you wanna go super cheap, get a box fan and a bunch of cheap home radiator filters, put your cuts of meat in the ridges of the filters, and stack them on top of the box fan with the air blowing through them. Technique based Alton Brown.
>>912878
Not likely; I've never heard of that being done successfully. You'd definitely end up having to change the salt a few times if it worked at all.
I'd start by soaking the strips in brine overnight and then smoke it over a hardwood fire until it was done. It can be stored for quite a while in dry salt, as long as there isn't thick marbling.
>>912878
Dont know about the bow but to cure meat you have to hold it in salt for some time and then smoke it to get that flavour. You can just cut it in small strips - salt as fuck and hang it in warm, ventilated area to dry but make sure no flies get to it. Same goes for fish... Smell really bad but tasye good with beer
I have the option on going to a uni in either Northern Cali or Colorado. Which is more /out/? My main hobbies are hiking, fishing, and kayaking
>>912719
is it humbolt? go to humbolt and do fisheries.
Instead of attanding college take out the maximum student loans you can then buy 128 shipping containers and weld them together into a shitpost.
>>912730
yes, that is actually my major.
With less than 10 days until Christmas, I need to get my father a gift. He's really into mountain climbing. This is not my area of expertise, my out interests are fishing and hunting. He's into these as well (as it was he who got me into both) but for the last few years he's been all about the mountains (Blanc, Matterhorn are the most recent he's climbed)
Can you suggest a gift, gadget, book or other useful thing to do with mountaineering? I know literally nothing about it. If anyone has experience mountain climbing you could really help me out.
Ideally any suggested gift should be available from amazon uk. Another thing is that most of the equipment he owns is top level in terms of price, whereas I am but a poor slob and must set a £50 budget on whatever I get.
Any and all suggestions welcome, I'm also very open to fishing and other out gift ideas.
>>912666
>father
>suggest mountaineering
No. But the old standby, hookers and blow is always in season.
>>912672
£50 limit though, can you imagine the quality of blow and the attractiveness of the hooker I'd get with that?
Outsidey ideas please good sir

Winter camping in a few days, and need to keep my GoPro batteries fresh the whole time. How do I keep them from draining in the cold? I won't be able to keep them all in pockets and such.
>>912428
Chemical heater packets. Keep the batteries in one insulated container with a single packet. Change out the packet when needed.
>>912428
Insulate them and put them together with your thermos, boiled water etc.
>>912428
shove them up your butt.
newfag problem here
whenever I try roping up a tarp, the rope fails to grip and the tarp sags.
How do I avoid saggy tarps, out?
Rope up as in tie up like a tent or bind up for storage?
>>912403
whats this called,?
>>912413
That's a hitch bro. Specifically a cow knot or some shit.
Look, tie a bowline to fixed objects because it's always easy to untie. When running a line around an object such as a tent stake loop or branch, run your line through the loop, then tie a hitch exactly like your picture. Slide it up and down to tension the line, the friction will keep it from sliding back down.
Hey Out, I heard of some caves that are near my area that id really like to explore but have never went into one before. Any tips and what kind of gear should I bring?
I'm also a little worried about animals hibernating in these caves right now because it just got bitch cold here. Valid concern or am I being paranoid?
Knee pads, elbow pads, head lamp, whistle, bandana, spare head lamp, helmet, pee bottle.
Keep in mind some caves are actually illegal to venture into because of bats. But for spelunking it's good to bring plenty of light sources. Specifically, a small handheld flashlight, a bigger, more powerful handheld, a hardhat with a mounted light, extra batteries for all, and a bunch of glow sticks. Use the glow sticks to mark your path back, since it is really easy to get lost in a cave. knee and elbow pads are nice, and a good pair of hard-knuckle gloves. First aid kit, of course, and a length of rope for emergencies. DO NOT climb or rappel unless you have the proper training and equipment, plus someone to belay. That also, bring someone with you. Caves can be dangerous as fuck, and you need someone to retrieve your corpse.
>>912377
cool i have all of those things, should i expect to be confronted by an animal though?
amateur fly fisherman here, based Kentucky. Anyone got tips for trout? General fly fishing thread too I guess.
>Implying I go fishing
Yeah right, cunt
>>912291
In the pastebin in the OP of the fishin thread, there is a fly guide but it was written by Skid so might be completely useless
How many of you read Hatchet as a kid? That series is probably what got me into /out/.
Also, I just got a library card the other day so do you guys have any book recommendations for /out/ related literature? I checked out a collection of stories by Ernest Hemingway but I'm not really digging it.
General /out/ book thread I guess.
If you want something more economical and philosophical, Walden. If you want adventure, the rest of Gary Paulsen's hatchet series is pretty aight. Liver-eating Johnson is fucking brutal, it's the inspiration for the movie Jeremiah Johnson.
>>912286
>pass the liver
And I have a hardbound, first edition.
With out reading the source material, the liver scene with Johnson and del Gue in the movie is so subtle it's imperceptible.
Highly recommended.
I love this series along with the My Side of The Mountain books by Jean Craighead George.
Is meditation /out/?
We already have fishing, why would you want to meditate?
YEAH, SURE...MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR EVENING SUNGAZING FOR A MASTERBATION FREE NIGHT
