Hi there. What are you guys' experience with GPS units? Which do you own? What features do you like and what do you use them for?
I'm interested in a GPS for backpacking trails I've never been to. Do I want the 200$+ units that come with big color maps preloaded or available from their website?
Or Do I want pic related that's just 90$ and can be loaded with maps you find online that are third party?
Whos maps are better? I'm intermediate skill level as far as /out/ stuff. Last backpacking trip I needed to change the hike location at the last minute (due to original location getting washed out and closed) and was trying to find the FUCKING trailhead at night and it took over an hour to find. A GPS that works better than my FAGGOT phone, which lead me in circles, would be nice for that aspect alone.

Just find some topo maps for your location, they can be cheaply printed out and laminated for your specific trip/area and besides orienteering is a valuable skill to learn anyway.
>>990889
Yes op your phone is a faggot and so are you.
>>990889
No need to bump every 45 minutes. This is a slow board. Threads can last for months.
I have a Garmin GPSMAPS 64st. My favorite feature is that I can take a photo of any trail map and make it an overlay map in my GPS. This is perfect for hiking trails I've never been to before. Many of the Garmin GPSs have this capability (but not the one in OP pic).
So I'm female, 19, travelled a reasonable amount youth hostel to youth hostel, but never camped illegally/unplanned in another country. I plan on travelling around Europe and the UK this summer staying in youth hostels, but I trying to keep the cost very low.
Should I take a tent/tarp and sleeping bag with me? I am alone, if I miss the last bus out of some random town in rural Croatia, is sleeping in the woods just sealing a rape and murder sentence?
I am Aussie living in England, don't know how safe European countries tend to be. Never had an issue camping alone in national parks in Aus. So the question is should I buy a tent/tarp and sleeping bag in case I need to sleep outside some nights, or just fuck it and make sure I stay in motels/youth hostels.

You can bring a light tarp that can be used in a pinch, but you'd also need a sleeping bag, and a pad for the ground. Otherwise you're going to be cold.
I wouldn't feel safe in an unknown area camping somewhere very close to people. 99% of the time it would be completely fine, but you don't want some greasy eastern European man getting all grabby on you at 3am in the middle of Romania.
I would plan every night to stay somewhere safe. If you were planning on camoing, you'd really need to have more than just a tarp, and you'd be carrying probably another 5-6 lbs minimum to have a comfortable nights sleep.
>is sleeping in the woods just sealing a rape and murder sentence?
just don't rape and murder while sleeping in the woods and you'll be fine
is it real... or copycat ?

Copy
Probably fine, but Chink knockoffs really vary based on batches (and even within batches).
Steel specs might or might not be accurate. Except no better than 440, really. If it's better, than score.
I've got a couple of their Civilian copies that I use on bottles because I want my real one as a collectable. They're pretty good.

Anybody know a good documentary on John Muir and/or the history of Yosemite?
I'm writing about it for my California history class. I've spent most of my life in that part of the Sierras but never really learned that much about Yosemite itself.
Google is being a PITA and keeps bombarding me with that climbing documentary and gopro footage of someone's vacation. I need historical stuff about the formation and early history of the park.
>>996887
I am also interested
Just read his books dude. Check out "The Wilderness World of John Muir" by Edwin Way Teale
>>996887
>Bro do you even research
Kidding aside, though, are you also looking for information or just a documentary?
Off the top of my head, I think there is a series of Ken Burns documentaries that covers each of the National parks. I haven't watched them, but I think it would be a good one to try.
I don't know how intense this paper you're going to write is, but if you are looking for sources you can actually cite in your paper, you will probably want to look in more specialized places than just google searches.
Does your school give you access to online databases? That would be a good place to look. If your school has a library, usually there should be a link somewhere on their online catalog to a number of databases with scholarly articles on a wide range of topics. If you're lucky, you may have access to a video archive. Also, if your school doesn't have a library or doesn't have online database subscriptions, you should try your local public library, as they most likely will have some sort of access to research databases, but keep in mind, you will probably have to use their computers to access them. But a trip to the library is better than paying your own money for database subscriptions. And if all else fails, ask your librarian for help, and they should be happy to assist you.
When you're on a trail with your friends, how do you react when you meet some loner hikers, do you like freak out they can stalk you or do some weird shit? Is it like normal thing to warn local rangers some creepy guy's wondering around?
>>996319
Hiking by yourself doesnt make you a creep in anyway stop being such a pretentious ass
>>996319
I think you may be retarded.
I mean, people are not friendly when I run into them when I bring my rifle hiking in the National Forest to do some stealth plinking, but they're just East Coast anti-fun fags.
Are they any good? They seem to have quality stuff at a good price. I'm looking at getting the Ionosphere tent and Softie 3 (Merlin) for a bike tour.
I too am wondering the same, I'm looking into the Skorpion 3 or the Bunker. If any anons own either of these l would appreciated input.
I feel like they are a pretty low-key brand. I'll have to check them out.
What do you think will happen to the outdoors/nature areas in America in the next 10, 20, 50 years?
>>995836
There will be less and less of it until it's all gone in a hundred years or so.
It will remain the same.
>>995836
If you look at it from population growth vs resources view. In 50 years the earths human population will be close to 10 billion. Right now we are at 7.5 billion. As we are already starting to feel the effects of the current population on the resources we will see a dramatic reduction in open spaces and an increase in agriculture. This isn't calculating for things like advances in medicine that prolong life or reduce infant death rates. One of two things will happen, we will either need to institute draconian controls or we make ourselves extinct.
Can someone identify this backpack? thanks.

hey /out/ I don't post here often, but I need a little advice. We found a pair of cottontail bunnies, and before anyone screams "Don't move them from the nest!", here's what happened:
>Dad's clearing out the yard for easter party
>Digging out an old stump with a garden hoe
>We spot a bunny crawling out and we picked it up from it's (now destroyed) nest
>Start rummaging through the wheelbarrow that he was throwing the stump pieces in
>Sure enough, theres one in there, miraculously unharmed
>Start digging down into the nest to see If there are any more trapped in there
>Get viciously attacked by fire ants that are now everywhere
>Brought the two bunnies inside and started seeing what to do
Now, I'm sure the mother is still out there somewhere, but the nest is completely destroyed and infested with fire ants now, so there's no way I'm putting them back. My sister wants to keep them as pets, and I kind of want to as well. I know that every piece of information screams "NO, YOU CAN'T KEEP WILD RABBITS, YOU HAVE TO RELEASE THEM!", but fuck that, this is the internet, and I don't give a shit.
So far, I bought a couple cans of goat's milk, and some heavy whipping cream, and they've been drinking it like crazy through the syringe, so they're pretty healthy and they seem fine (they're a little freaked out, but they're getting better). I got a cage, some hay, one of those cage watter bottles that you hang, some rabbit food and a couple mini bowls.
They're almost exactly the size of (pic related), and are both about 4" long, give or take. So I'm not sure exactly how old they are, or when and how to start weening them off the milk. And when I do ween them off the milk, is the generic rabbit food I got ok for them, or should I just feed them wild grass? Do I give them water too, or do they get plenty of hydration from the milk as babies, and from the grass when they get older?
>TL;DR: I found a pair of baby cottontails and I'm keeping them as pets. How can I make it happen?
Keep feeding em till they are big enough to eat then make a stew
>>993244
As much as I love rabbit meat I couldn't do that after raising them from bunnies. I was kind of thinking about it, but no.
Besides, aren't animals that live in neighborhoods not good to eat?
>>993249
Not if you've kept them and force feed them krispy kreams and big Mac! Make some bunny liver pate!
My dog keeps running outside and barking at nothing. It's weird cause I will take a photo and it nothing, but one time I took a photo and then my phone and all the electronics turned off. My phone still don't work but I broght it to the Apple Store and I asked if they could fix it, they took it away and said ohhh we can't fix this. I don't know what happend, I just want it fixed, if you could please help.
I got my dog to stop barking at things when I bought an electric fly swatter.
Everytime he fucks off, wham! Right on the nose!
>>992523
When you need to poop , just use your phones GPS to find a geocatch and poop in that.
Also you are much better off going MGTOW on your own instead of waiting for the commune witch seems to be taking forever
>>992526
Wat?
Who's hunting some toms this weekend?
>>992228
Just got back from hunting actually. Didn't see any toms, heard a few gobbles and saw a few hens though. Maybe tomorrow.
>>992228
Hunting turkey is retarded hard. I can go out and hear them all evening but getting a shot is nearly impossible unless you clear patches.
>>992544
>all evening
I've never killed a turkey in the evening. The only time I go out in the evening is to find where they're roosting and get out early the next morning so I can get pretty close by before they come down. Kind of cheating so I only do it towards the end of season, but it works.
When you go /out/ do you bathe in streams/mountain lakes? And do you wash your hands after you shit?
Guys swamp ass has become the #1 problem for me while /out/, what do? Bump

Got an unusual technique? A tip? A trick? A useful tidbit? Share dat advice son.
The aim of this thread is less fishing general, which is a frequently off topic discussion of fishing, and more of an info thread. This thread should read like an infographic of fishing tips.
Picture related. When spinning, it can be good to take a small imitation Toby spoon and remove the treble. This can be tied inline about 1-2 feet above the main spinner. Not only does this add extra movement to the point spinner, it also gives the impression of a small school of baitfish.
Fish will always strike at the rear spinner which will be the one with the hook.
I always use cheap imitation Toby spoons for this method in order to minimise cost, as the main spinner will usually be a real brand. In the event of a snag or line breaking, you don't want to lose an expensive real Toby lure in addition to your point lure. Imitations like this can be found on eBay and are so cheap they add almost nothing to the cost of your rig, but add plenty of attraction.

Back to the fishing general you go
Palomar knot. Enough said.
>>989332
Elaborate I only use blood knots for everything
What would make the better out instrument, I'm leaning tow2wards the penny whistle
definitely the whistle. harmonicas are grating and annoying. with a whistle you can enchant the forest around you, and with the right tune, attract a strapping young prince and live happily ever after.
https://clyp.it/fkj041mz
>>989223
Harmonica definitely. Packs easier. Greater octive range. Available in like 21 keys. Can play along with wider range of other instruments and still sound good. Looks more like eating tacos than tickling a pickle.
Gotta go with the harmonica. Pretty easy to pick up and learn plus imagine the sweet feeling of roaming the desert playing the blues or traveling in the mountains tootin some folk songs.
Gonna be checking out a storm drain soon, what should I expect and how do I prepare?
A flood to occur and you to die.
