i have to sleep in my car on thursday. where is the best place to do this without getting arrested?

Rest area?

I mean you won't get arrested either way unless the same cop kicks you out of multiple places in a nice suburb. They will just tell you to leave. For one night, you can probably just do Walmart.

Wal-Mart, a truck stop, a ride share lot.

I asked /k/, but I figure you guys might also know.

I bought a riggers belt(Blackhawk) a while ago and saw the retention lanyard on sale for $20 so I figured "why not complete the set?". Question is, can I thread the retention lanyard through the weight supporting D ring like pic related, or will that fuck up the loop and wear it out making it no longer safe to use as a retention line? The suggestion is to put a carabinier between them, but I wouldn't want the carabinier rattling around if I were to ever use the thing.

NOTE: I doubt I'll ever use the thing in a life or death situation, but I figure with me dropping the cash, I should get it set up in a safe practical way.

And the actual loops on the retention lanyard. I figure I might have to strain the loop to get it to slide through itself to connect it to the d ring.

I am 42, out of work, and I don't think I can go back to the grind. I am healthy, but a little chubby. Could I get some coaching on how to basically go camping for the rest of my life? I see some people here camp out for a month, then come to town for supplies. Could you expand on this? Am I crazy to try this? I just see myself waking up in twenty years just as unhappy a wage slave as I am now, and older and less capable. Could I pull this off in Canada? Help, me, /out/!

Like or not, at your age life is going to get harder, even just a little bit, year by year.

It's doable, but is it really how you want it to be?
>>

>It's doable, but is it really how you want it to be?

No idea. It seems though that you work harder every year for less and less, and I just wonder if any others have found a compromise that they can live with. Given too many years to an economy that is falling apart, and you get to mid life and ask yourself what is worth it and what isn't. Just the thought of taking orders from exploitative and indifferent strangers for the rest of my life depresses me. I quite like being out of work. It is just the rent and the bills, you know?

I say if you got no responsibilities (wife/kids/etc), go for it. Of course, research research research. Shelter>water>food. Find camp recipes, learn edible flora in your area, learn nutrition (this plus that equals a complete protein, etc.), learn knots, learn game processing and the laws around hunting/trapping in your area, learn and practice all this shit and more until you can do it in your sleep. National forests are your friend; google "dispersed camping" and learn the rules around it. Got any savings? A safety net is a good thing to have.

I'm a farmer, and it's not rare that I work with the ankles submerged in mud
till now I used military boots but now I'd buy some rubber ones
could you recommend some brands?
right now I'm oriented to buy some Hunters of the Balmoral line
what is important to me is that they should be very durable and soft, I don't want them to "tie" too much the movement of my ankles because often I need to squat
thank you anons

p.s. if you own some hunters, is the rubber soft?

I was considering doing some hiking in the region, but I'm not a serious hiker and don't really have any gear

I hear there are trail lodges all over the place, so I'm not sure if I should just go for it

When I say I'm not a hiker, I do walk a lot
30KMs for me at 30% pack weight wouldn't be unusual, but my navigating is only at basic orienteering level and I don't even have a mobile phone or shoes which would stand up to any snow
Maps are proving harder to find than they should be, but I might pick some up there

Always I struggle to gauge the difficulty of hikes because of the vast and alarming discrepancies in how they are described
Day hiked in china sounded like epic treks, serious jungle trekking advises only to take water and closed shoes

If it's just lodge to lodge on marked trains in autumn I'm totally fine,

If you're gonna do it, do it before the seasonal shift hits. Avoid hiking alone if possible. Depending where you hike there might be wolves and bears, be mindful of that. Trails are poorly maintained but lodges are nice, cheap and most are safe, make sure to try the tea. Terrain can change rapidly so bring food and drink in case you misjudge distance or time. Carry a phone with you.

>When I say I'm not a hiker, I do walk a lot
Walking and hiking are very different, but I'm sure you know that.

Safe roads and let us know how it goes. Here's a photo of the Seven Rila Lakes area. Popular place with beginner friendly trails.

Native here. I'm also just getting into hiking so I can't give you any idea based on my experience. I have a colleague at the university who knows Rila and half of Pirin by heart, so I can easily get you through to him; he'd be more than happy to help.
There are maps available for most of the mountains here. If I'm not mistaken the maps for the eastern part of Stara Planina are not yet out for sale. Anyway, here's what they look like. As you can see they are bilingual and you'll have no trouble with them. You can buy them at most bookstores and shops that sell hiking/extreme sports gear. Sorry for the quality, the light here is terrible.

This map right here (planinar org /%D1%85%D0%B8%D0%B6%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5-%D0%B2-%D0%B1%D1%8A%D0%BB%D0%B3%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%8F/) has most, if not all lodges/shelters. Blue marker means the lodge is working or at least there is no information about it being closed; yellow means it's being repaired so it's closed; red means it's closed for good/deserted. A night at a lodge usually costs about 10 leva which is about 5 euros. If you need any specific information from this site I'd be happy to translate. There's a nice collection of PDFs in there dedicated to hiking. Sadly, they are mostly in Bulgarian.

If you decide to pay us a visit and you want to contact somebody first, you can write me at [email protected].

Victoria-area anon reporting in.
Shit sucks, yo.

We're supposed to get 30 inches of rain over the weekend with 100+mph winds for an extended time. Pretty sure I'm gonna lose power for most of it. Thank god I'm up on a slight hill and no trees are likely to fall on my house.
>>
>>1088467

The silver lining is that at least you won't go thirsty. Stay safe anon.
>>
>>1088469
Yeah, I've got a rain barrel in the yard. Already emptied and cleaned it yesterday in prep. Probably going to fill the bathtub and the sinks too, for good measure.

In some ways it's good timing because I had been planning on a week-long trip to Big Bend next week and stocked up on some supplies a little while back. Got some water jugs, plenty of backpacking food, and an extra fuel canister for my stove.

Now I just have to keep the dog from fear-vomiting all over the house once it hits.

Can you guys recommend a good set of field guides for identifying local plants, animals, geological features, etc? I'm in the Upper Midwest and would like to start foraging for edible plants, bird watching, and building a stronger understanding of my surroundings. I'm looking for something well-organized that makes it quick to look up a species based on morphology and includes details about animal behaviors, uses for plants and fungi, and so on.

Also accepting general reading recommendations. Come post about the comfy books you like to take /out/ with you. Fiction, philosophy, and suchlike.

What does /out/ tell people when they seem perplexed that you go camping alone?

Or should I just go /out/ and quit talking about it, and instead just tell a family member or a friend where I'm going and when I'll be back and be low key about it?

I've recently been going camping and backpacking solo more often because I'm away from school and no one wants to go with me. Last week I've had run-ins with bears. For three days in a row I've seen black bears within 20 yards of me (in a different area). Luckily they've always run off so far.

I have a bear canister and am responsible when it comes to wildlife, but this is starting to freak me out. Last Thursday when I was cooking dinner, a mother had snuck up behind me (w/ in about 4 yards) and I had to be aggressive.

The Catskills are on my way to college and I want to stop for a night or two and do some hikes, but I'm afraid to and am considering just skipping it and sleeping at a state park further south instead. I don't carry a firearm or bear spray and hike and sleep alone. I don't want to push it and put myself in danger even if I really want to go hiking there. What should I do???

Also pic related is mine :)

It feels like I just got lucky. Who's to say next time when I'm 3 miles out on some hike all alone a bear won't be so afraid and realize it can kill me?
On Friday I hiked and (being paranoid at this point) clapped and sang loudly to let bears know I was in the area. I still saw one just look at me from 25 yards away or so and waited a bit before leaving.
>>
>>1087689
if they were brown bears, i'd say yes. but black bears are big old pussies who will run away.

My wife and I have planned our honeymoon for Athena, Greece in October.

Neither of us have ever camped before overnight and have decided to set a week aside to do it on a Greek island nearby. What unexpected things should we prepare for?

So far we think we have it planned out:

- Pop up tent for camping
- Battery Powered Lantern 700 lumen
- Fire starter knife set
- First aid Kit
- Hydration packs 4 liters
- Hiking/Camping bag

We are planning to find a secluded beach as its off season and just visit the city daily for water refills.

I by all means know we are beyond casuals, but its our honeymoon and it would be a fun adventure to sleep in a tent outside together.

Am I missing any critical supplies?

Any general tips
