Would, but company policy is only once a month. If you want it washed more often you have to make a special request with pics.

Really should be every two weeks though. Weekly like TMC requires is too often (they will bitch the driver out if it doesn't get done).

I have my cdl road test on Wednesday and I'm really fucking stressed out. Any tips? I don't feel like I'm ready. I'm studying the pre trip but I'm worried about the backing. Plus I have little experience driving in streets and tomorrow I'm gonna do highway driving. I'm worried because the test is really early during rush hour traffic. How do I stay calm during the test? I really want to pass the first time
>>
>>16778752
Reminds me of this time I was talking to this ownerop in a Peterbilt dealership and he was shilling TMC super hard, meanwhile this other guy joined the party mid convo, and when TMC-kun said something about how cool their trucks looked because the whole fleet is black and chrome, the other guy goes "Oh, do you drive for Stevens?"
The look on the TMC guy's face was priceless. It was confusion, realization, disgust, and disappointment all in a half second.

ONE WEIRD TRICK TO PASS YOUR EXAM THE DMV DOES NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW

The results on the clipboard are gospel. If you murder your examiner during the exam, and turn in the clipboard in with a passing score, they are still REQUIRED to grant you your CDL

You can stay calm by hoping you don't get paired with someone in a cuckshed going through a herpes outbreak. Should work.

I started my CDL course today (yes, on a sunday). I'd never driven a truck that wasn't a 13 or 18 speed Peterbilt or Kenworth before, and never driven anything with less than 500hp. I'm stuck in a 1995 FLD shitpile with an 8 speed and a 430hp Series 60. holy shit it's so terrible. I don't know what rear end is in it but it's tapped out at 62.

with that said, I was doing traffic and highway driving on what was technically my first day BTW which seems quick?

Black people are always the worst employees. They are lazy, loud, obnoxious, defiant, and generally don't care if they get fired or not.

But the black people in trucking are the complete opposite. Every black trucker I've gotten to know well has their shit together more than most people I know. They know exactly what they will be doing a week from now, when I don't even know what I'm doing tomorrow. They always got the cleanest trucks too.

What is the deal with black people who choose the trucking career?

this is the future they are selling with automation.

yet really it will just be a straight truck that has no cab. all the truck will be under the shipping container it carries. no meat bags allowed.

Yeah maybe once we get some non conservatives that don't hate science and technology in the government, the DOT would allow that.

In the mean time, enjoy the glorified cruise control that doesn't even work.
>>
>>16779466
Obama's DOT wouldn't even allow Audi to sell cars with automatic adaptive high beam headlights. since the law states that cars must have a manual switch for high beams.
>>

True but I'm worried about rolling back, or someone merging into my blind spot. I'm also worried about my test giver being a dick and purposely putting me into a sticky situation, or saying stuff like "you're revving pretty high there, you know what you're doing son?" Stuff like that. It's really the backing I'm worried about I hope by then I'm ready
>>
>>16780050
Don't make up scenarios in which you can fail before they've even happened. You can fake yourself out by just acting like you know what the fuck you're doing, pretend. The placebo effect of that on it's own should instill enough confidence and aptitude to at least pass the test. Stop setting yourself up for failure.

But more importantly, can you are least bother learning what the difference is between conservatism and liberalism? Prohibition was a conservative movement that promoted morality, and the big city liberals got pissed and repealed it later, by that progressive cuck FDR.

following up here. first of all it turns out this shitheap Freightshaker is actually only 370hp.

second, by show of hands, how many of you have ever parallel parked a tractor-trailer in the real world? I ask because, jesus, I'm fine with the offset backing and alley backing but good god, parallel parking is so pointless.
>>
>>16782874

>>
>>16784761
I do it about 20-50 times a year. It's really not that hard in the real world, but you'll usually get out of practice between the times you actually need it. It's just an offset back where you pay extra attention to your nose.
>>
>>16784761
Parallel parking is a good skill to have, I've done it a few times. Sometimes you need to do it at small rest areas that don't have proper parking lanes, just a big shoulder to park on. I've also parallel parked while overnighting at some Walmart or Sam's Club parking lots. You want to be unobtrusive there because parking at Walmart is a privilege so you parallel park in that little nook in the corner far away from the front of the store that no four wheelers like to park in. You don't really need to have it mastered your first couple months on the road though, you should be focused on not killing anybody

But she gets off at 5pm Wed and not sure if I should go out by her but I kinda want to get her to come out my way. There is this real popular Baja restaurant that is supposed to be good and after that maybe go down by the pier and beach since it is real close. If she comes out by me, I'm def gonna bring the Scoot and make her get on the back of that so I can scare the shit out of her rippin around by the beach.

Sounds like a good start.

The hour and a half walking tour is 60 bucks for two adults. Sounds fun to go see some sweet street art, cost aside though. The closest thing we get to that up here is tagging on train cars.

Maybe figure out a close by backup or two in case either the baja restaurant or beach excursion don't work out.

Yeah, if you somehow get stuck out there until 8:30pm, you can't clock in until 6:30am the next morning.

But that is fucked anyway. When I first started I had some weeks where DOT shit actually applied. We have to fill out logs if we work more than 12hrs and I haven't even needed to fill out a log in close to 2 years. Also since it is a 5-day work week, you can't go over 60hrs. There was one week when I first started when we were slammed over the summer and I worked 12+ hours every day so by Friday I only had like 8hrs left of the 60 and had to bring back stops around 1pm.

TMC, Roehl, Melton and Maverick all hire from school and are pretty good. Boyd Bros. and Western Express also hire straight from school and are a little worse and fucking horrible, respectively.

TMC- good if you like shiny trucks
Roehl- good if you are reserved about flatbed and want the option to pull a different trailer
Melton- good if you want to stay out for 3 weeks or more (14 day minimum)
Maverick- good if you want to drive an automatic

Besides that they're all pretty much the same
>>
>>16789004
Also stay away from Prime. Total garbage/cult tier
>>
>>16789004
Thanks.

I've heard TMC is like boot camp and treat their drivers like slave workers. I don't want to go there.

I personally want to stay out on the road. I won't be one of those cucks that want home time every weekend.

Are there any flatbed drivers here that can estimate how many miles I would be driving a week? I assume it won't be as much as the van drivers that just drop off a trailer and pick another up. You got to wait for live load/unload then secure and tarp yourself.

Do you know which company would be more flexible with drivers who want to spend their days off on the road? Like the way I was told from my Dad who used to drive regional reefer for frozen foods, you got X days off every X days you spent on the road. For him, every 6 days he was on the road, he received 2 days of home time. Then he was free to request home time whenever he wanted. He could go out for 6 days, and spend 2 days home, or be out for 24 days and spend a week at home. It was up to him basically. Do companies still use this method of home time?
>>
>>16788942
McElroy also is an option. I know Prime and Werner have flatbed divisions depending on where you live, too.
>>
>>16788549
They had that IP range ban going again around here for like a month so I had to renew my pass. Fucking Mook. Then it got lifted a week or two ago, but today my personal cell IP got b& from somebody spamming so I had to funpost from my work phone. I probably could've just turned the phone on and off and been fine but still that shit is annoying because it was a 48hr ban and I couldn't appeal it and tell them to fuck off because cell IP or use the pass to get around it.
>>
>>16789041
Shit I haven't heard of that in years. I remember my first trucking job in 99. Hardly any benefits and no paid vacation. But what I liked about it was the flexible home time. We got 1 day for every 5 out. I would work a month then take a week off at the beach. Not anymore sadly. Good luck finding a carrier these days that accumulate home time days like that. Also good luck finding a carrier that will get you the home time they advertise in their job postings. If they tell you you'll get any more than a weekend home a month, they are lying to you. You may get a day to visit when it's passing through your route or something. Also, your weekend off isn't a traditional weekend off like you get from a normal job. Your weekend off will be nothing more than your 34 reset, not an entire weekend. And the time starts ticking once you drop the cab off at the terminal. Live 4 hours from the terminal? You basically have 30 hours off.

Trucking isn't for beta people who are afraid their wife will cheat on them and need to be home every weekend. It's not for people who complain and whine a lot either.
>>
would it be a benefit to have electric drive motors in the trailer wheels for oversized loads?

Just for low speeds to help get things going and not strain the tractor drive?
>>
>>16789041
I know for a fact Roehl uses that method b/c I used to work there, but I can't say for the others except that I'd probably guess it's the same.

I also know Melton is "hard" on their recruits, but they just do that to weed out jackasses. I know that because my buddy tried to go to work for them and he got weeded out because he's a jackass.

As far as miles go, it varies. Your first few months you should be happy to get 1500, but you should really get to averaging 2000 to be able to make fair money.
Where I'm at now I feel like I had a bad week if I get 2200, but we're on paper logs and unlimited trucks, so I shoot for 3000
>>
>>16789117
Just more overhead and profit for mechanic shops.
>>
>>16789117
The gears are so low anyway. It will get the heavy load moving just fine, it will just take longer to get up to speed and hills will be a bitch.

And then you start adding electric motors and batteries, even more fuckin weight to haul.
>>
>>16789133
How many loads do you do a week? I know tarp pay is a big consideration. I know some carriers make drivers tarp every load. That's $80 for tarp and untarping a load at Melton. 2-3 loads a week and that's a considerable amount to make up for the lack of miles.
>>
>>16789143
If you want to get into "more money less miles" work right out of school, hit up the closest Dollar General DC and see who carries their trailers. $200 per trailer plus $250 bonus for 3 trailers a week, on top of 41 or 43 cpm. Right out of school, you can clear $1300/wk easy.
>>
>>16789166
But there doesn't seem to be any travel in that.

I'm just looking for around $1K/week before taxes minimum. I want to get into O/O flatbed in 4-5 years so figured I should start right out the gate. Being a van driver would bore the fuck out of me driving 10+ hours a day not even being able to get out of the cab to unload trailers myself to get some fresh air and exercise.

>>
>>16789786
46.5c/mi is what they offered me, but tarp pay is garbage. $13/small tarps, $23 for the large ones. That's not per tarp, that's just what you get if you threw tarps. Also dispatch is pants-on-head retarded non-truckers that also plan your route and fuel stops for you. I had to dispute them on more than one occasion and take routes I knew for a fact where better. Do not go with Roehl.
>>
>>16789917
Yeah that's something I don't want to get trapped into. I don't want to be micromanaged. That's why I don't want to even bother applying to TMC. I've read from drivers saying they even tell them when and were to take breaks and park for the night.

I live close to Abilene and know a lot of truckers there. They even let you plan your own route, but they aren't going to pay you an extra 50 miles because you took a 50 mile longer route, so you're really biting yourself in the foot if you try that. But they don't have dispatchers trying to control you. A friend I went to high school with works there for almost 2 years now. He says he drops off a load and dispatcher asks when he can be ready to pick up another. He looks at his time available and says tomorrow morning. They find him a load for tomorrow morning. They don't force him to take loads. They don't force him to take specific routes, specific fuel stops, when he can park for the night, etc. He's in total control of his mileage and paycheck. The only complaint he has is they have shitty trucks with no APU, inverters, etc.

But I don't want to drive van. Is there a flatbed carrier that sounds as good as Abilene?

"Travel" is such a scam. It's a gimmick. It's exciting for like a week, but every state is ultimately exactly the same; the big cities suck ass and the bits in between are all boring, some are hillier than others.
Also, flatbedding and door swinging are going to be nearly identical in terms of driving, tarping and strapping are only going to take up a couple of hours of your time a week, the other 65 are going to be still driving almost as many miles.
Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar are all 100% driver unload. Dollar General is easier because you don't really have to back as hard and you just push around big shopping cart looking rolltainers. Family-Dollar-Tree trailers have 4000pcs/40000lbs of floor stacked boxes that you unload individually by hand on rollers. Both accounts run 3 trailers a week / 7 trailers in 2 weeks on average, and fresh out of school, you will not find a job that is nearly as physical or pays nearly as much. I don't know who told you tarping is exercise but they're full of it. It's just a pain in the ass compared to swinging a door.

I got a buddy who financed a W900 at the 80,000 dollar price point and the motor let go 6 weeks later. now he's in about 160k of debt. This has steered me away from financing a used truck and a new truck is out of the question. I'm thinking about getting a older truck for around 10-15k and just getting the feel for being a o/o. If the truck fucks up in any major way I won't be too tied up in it money wise and could always fix it with readily available parts. any help or advice would be great.

I've been from Los Angeles to Atlanta, Philadelphia to Seattle, Houston to Green Bay, and nearly everything in between, and I'd trade it for a regional position in a heartbeat if I could find one that paid as much. I'd rather run the same 300mi road back and forth every day across Oklahoma or Kansas if it meant never having to deal with lower 48 headaches again. A sight is only exciting the first time you see it. I remember being blown away driving north up Utah I15 into Montana one winter. now I just get annoyed because I know I'll only be able to average 50mph instead of 60mph twatting around in the fucking cunting mountains. Plus 95% of the country outside of that is like the same three environments just copy/pasted.

All the owner ops at the place I was a company driver for when I was hauling frac sand would stay out as long as it took for a big frac job to finish up, and would stay on if there was another job right after, which could be upwards of a month or more without any home time.

How do I go about upgrading to CDL A? Can I just find somebody with a semi to let me practice backing and stuff, then go take the road test at DMV?

I currently drive a tandem axle dumper and pull a trailer 1-2 days a week. Just started like a month ago. Make $19/hour but it's boring as fuck driving the same route every day (or at least until the project ends).

>PACCAR maintains a conservative workplace culture. Formal business attire is required for employees and visitors at the PACCAR headquarters. Men are required to wear business suits, as are guests to the facility. The company also requires men to shave their faces. Prior to a plant visit by Mark Piggott, the Chairman of the Board, employees will be sent home to shave so there are no beards in his presence. If an employee is caught with facial hair by the Chairman, the employee's manager will be contacted so the shaving rules are made clear. The requirement to shave is not documented in company policies, but is verbally communicated by Human Resources and upper management.

To be more elaborate.

I'm 24 and have been working in construction since I was 19. Got tired of making $12/hour working like a dog doing road work so I told my boss I was going to quit to go to CDL school. He said hold on a minute, and told me to go get my DOT physical and get my learners permit for a CDL B. He gave me a day off to do that once I studied for the test. He then put me with one of the dump truck guys for about a month. Then he let me use a dump truck to take my road test and I got my CDL B and he promoted me to the dump truck side. Got a $8 raise but I'm still pretty miserable working here.

What should I do to get my CDL A and get OTR? I love driving, but I just can't stand being stuck in the same town my entire life going home every day to my shitty little apartment.

ok you're new here so I'll explain to you what to do, step-by-step

1. Come on the trucker thread on a malaysian sock puppet newsletter (you already done this)

2. Ask the truckers there the following question exactly: "I want trucker how do?"

3. They will tell you to get your CDL through a community college with a good reputation and lifetime job counseling and to avoid the companies with their own CDL schools due to their dubious quality and deplorable working conditions

4. (This is the important part) You will ignore them, and get your CDL through either Swift (best in class) or Prime (>driven by the best

5. You will then be stuck in a 2 year contract, at which point your only options are to:
A: convince god, yourself and everyone that it isn't so bad and pretend you're having a good time
B: crash into something

You don't steal them, you ask if you can take them. Most businesses view them as trash.

Or you could drive for 33 hours and then rest for 30

Yee like the firefighters

>tfw clocked out in 11:59 and narrowly avoided doing a log and getting bitched at for not taking a lunch no less than 8hrs into the shift

What's the consensus on Danny Herman? They only start at .35cpm but the recruiter said there's monthly/quarterly bonuses plus they average 3000-3200 miles a week. She also mentioned I should be home regularly since this is their largest terminal.

I believe it's because the steering link-arm or whatever it's called is curved rather than straight, so the wheels just can't turn as tightly or they'd hit it. Or maybe that's just in these KWs. The 386 was the same way but I don't recall the steering hardware being curved.

>Blindspot spotlight
That's a work light. I've only ever seen drivers light up dumbasses that are hanging out next to the trailer for too long.

That looks like it's been that way for a while.

Your job sounds more comfy than OTR. You'd miss it after a year on the road.

As far as I've read they do make that many miles. The average haul is 1500 miles.

But since everything besides Bepis and independent O/O is garbage you're probably right.
