Do you think any cars represent the modernist values of Dieter Rams and Le Corbusier in their design?
A Sacco Mercedes springs to mind and perhaps the XM, SM and CX but other than that no others.
I find it interesting that not many car people are interested in art and design.
Cars are 50 percent art and design and 50 percent engineering.
>>17241185
Probably for that very reason. Buildings can be extremely design focused because it doesn't take much to fulfill their purpose. Besides not collapsing and providing room on the inside there's not much a building has to do. Of course good architecture goes much further, but for the basic necessities that's it.
Cars on other hand are severly limited in design in order to maintain their function. They have to handle well, offer visibility, offer interior comfort, fit on the road, function reliably, it restricts them to a relatively common basic layout. Crazy designs are limited to concept cars because they don't have to work in the real world. Nevertheless within the boundaries set by engineering there's still a lot of design philosophy and beauty found in cars, just not to the same abstract degree as in architecture.

Why even care about dogfighting?
Do you heel toe? Do you doubleclutch?
>>17240577
I heel toe out of habit. There really isn't any reason to do so in everyday driving, but I started doing it just as practice for when I go to the track.
Doubleclutching is pointless nowadays desu
Heel toe all the time, or rather I always blip the throttle. I don't need the clutch, but I need synchros.
Double clutching, as stated above, is deprecated technology procedure.
>>17240602
Revmatching is a good tranny assist in any case.
I rev match the vast majority of the time. The pedals on my car are horribly placed for heel-and-toe though, the brake is a good few inches higher than the accelerator.
Double declutching is pointless with synchros.

If you have never bought a manual transmission car brand new off the dealership lot, you have NO right to complain about the disappearance of manuals.

Is there some truth to this advice?
http://www.goldcoasttransmissions.com/tmrd_faq/how-often-should-you-change-your-transmission-fluid/
I don't think that's great advice. If it's right to change your engine oil as it degrades, logically transmission fluid should be changed too at some interval. The thin / thick distinction isn't the worst issue, that would be fluid that is no longer slippery enough. We just changed fluid at 100,000 miles in our 4wd even though i's supposed to be "maintenance free", and there were no issues with the new thinner fluid. And shifting performance became more like new, crisper.
>>17239725
The article is horse shit. Most manufacturers have much longer service intervals if they have a service interval for the trans at all. That said, if your trans service is easy, 30k is the right mileage in my opinion. I got 545k on the original trans of a 2000 LeSabre doing that, and it wasn't mechanical failure that killed the car, but a chevy avalanche that wasn't paying attention.

SW20 feels the best to drive, but god damn is the AW11 gorgeous.
We're very likely to see a relaxing or removal of the 'modern' stuff that has made cars fatter and underpowered - no more emissions standard, no more safety standards, and no more bullshit government regulation of the car industry. Will we actually see cars that are free of their shackles?
I'm talking no more fuel injection, no more ECUs, no more of that fancy bullshit. Back in the 70s you had 6.2L V8s pulling about 160 horsepower because of the government emissions regulations, but these days I bet you could take that same engine with modern technology and get it to 1000 or 5000 horsepower with no problem, and once you put the carburetor back on it could probably pull 10000 horsepower. I'm thinking within a couple of years we'll have cheap sub $10k cars with 10k+ horsepower running around, once the government gets out of the auto industry
