>Using thicker weight oil than what's specified by the owner's manual on high mileage engines

Good or bad?

I've heard both sides, I'm wondering what /o/ says.

>Thicker oil will help burn/leak less
or
>Thicker oil is too heavy and won't flow in engine properly, wearing it out faster
or
>Thicker oil is fine as long as you let the engine warm up

so what the fuck is it

For example, I have a d16 honda engine with 230k miles that's been getting 20w50 for at least the past 30k miles, or 3-4 years I've owned it. Reason being because the previous owner's last oil change sticker had it, and because it burns about a half a quart every 1k miles
Am I fucking up the engine? I just replaced the rocker o rings so I've been thinking about putting 5w30 back in to see if it still burns or even just to have the original spec oil. Would switching weight after having used way thicker oil for a long time be a bad idea?

The oil pump can handle thick oils just fine.
My oil pressure increases when I run thicker oil. You're not going to have any issues.

If I wanted to drop a V8 into a small, light car to make a poor man's Shelby Cobra or Daytona, what car should I use?
I'd be quite set on using an aluminum SBC like an LS1, all memes aside. So far the best body I can think of is a 240Z. No convertibles please so no Miatas. A Triumph GT6 would also be cool but uncommon.

Btw this is all hypothetical. I'm not planning to actually do an engine swap anytime soon.

Triumph, but it would probably be better to just buy a replica of a Shelby

You could probably find an RX-7, or LS swap a rolling E30 or something. If you can weld you could make a V8 beetle

Shelby replicas are very expensive.

Sup /o/, I'm here for some financial advice and for some discussion.

Long story short, I need to buy new daily. Not sure what I want to buy yet but that's not the point of this thread.

Basically I have about 10k usd and I make about 1100 a month. I live at home and my parents pay for most of my expenses. I bank about 900 to 1000 a month. I'm supposed to be saving for when I transfer from community college to a university next winter (Jan 2016)

For this reason, I'm hesitant about dropping 4 or 5k all at once and cutting my savings in half. Everybody is telling me to just get a loan on a reliable lightly used car and spend like 150 a month for 5 years instead of buying a shitbox outright off of some dude on craigslist. this doesn't sound like that bad of an idea, I'd be able to get a little bit nicer/newer car too.

wat do?

Buy a Corolla outright for 1200 dollars.
>>
>>13935588
you don't think I can do better? I guess there is really no reason to spend more if it's just transportation but I would like something at least mildly fun.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/5330779136.html

I should say that if I'm going to buy a daily, I'd like 1996 or newer.

Im kinda curious, why doesnt someone design and build an all in one plug and play computer system that can compute the best way to run an engine?

It would be capable of pulling readings from all the engine sensors like coolant/oil temp and knock sensor, o2 sensor and etc. Then it would calculate the best air/fuel ratio from those readings.

So from the first start-up (from a fresh engine build and computer install) it would start the engine from a very conservative engine tune (that you set?) and from there, it would slowly advance timing until it detected the slightest knock, then it would slightly retard it (it would do this a few times while you are driving it during a few different conditions). It would also set the injector duty cycle based on the o2 sensor (wide ban?). Im sure it wouldnt be too hard to also install two hal effect sensors on the cv axles closest to the transmission and closest to wheel hub to measure torque based on the torsional measure of that grade of metal (the metal the axle shaft is made out of) for dyno type readings.

Basically im just curious if a computer could find the optimum tune for a custom built engine (that still runs off of gasoline) without the need of a shop to tune your engine for several hundred dollars.

Pic not related, it was one of two I had saved on my pc.

You mean an ECU?

Also, shit like this exists: http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/mc/efi/e-street.shtml
>>
>>13935378
so basically every modern ecu system ever
>>
>>13935406
>>13935430

I'm talking about some sort of aftermarket ecu that can take into account every sensor you have plugged in and then tune the engine itself. It would be able to set any sort of custom engine up with the correct tune ( assuming the hardware connected to it have the appropriate hardware to accommodate it.)

You wouldn't have to take your car to a shop as it would be able to tune it self.

Do you boys think this bad boy is worth the extra $20,000 more than a regular 5.0 GT? I currently an '05 GT and have to upgrade.

I have enough to only have to finance $10,000-$20,000~ @ 0% APR if I buy a new 5.0 with the options I want ( $39,000~ ). A GT350 with the options I want is roughly $56,000. That's a fuck ton more. I'd have to save for another 12-18 months before I can afford that. I've never driven the GT350 but I will the second my dealer gets one in. I just want to hear some rough 3rd party opinion.

I don't think so. They won't appreciate a huge amount, and unless you have a shit ton of money to blow that's an important factor.

Regular GT and upgrades if you want the speed. will end up cheaper for similar performance.
