Hey /o/ I wasn't sure where else to ask, so I assume this will be the best board to look for advice.
Basically, I am signing up for the Navy this month, and I'm particularly interested in rating as MM (Machinist Mate); working on a variety of things having to do with engineering and mechanics, and everything from running propulsion systems to fixing refrigeration units.
However, I'm not extensively knowledgeable about automotive work, and math hasn't been my strong suit. But I am very good with my hands, and I know the basics of engines and how things move and work.
How do I prepare for this job? What will I need to do to learn about basic engineering, running machines aboard a ship, etc.
Any and all help is appreciated.
>TL;DR Want to be Navy Machinist Mate. Wat do

if i had to guess take some electrical classes diesel tech and what not at a community or tech college
>>13969984
I'm an engineer aboard a smaller ship, what do you want to know?
There are too many Japanese VIP cars and threads. I want to see American cars VIP style.
Does this count?
>>13969923
Eh not really. Like my first post.
>>13969923
thats more of a low-rider
What does /o/ think of Maserati?
ferrari's slutty sister.
If you have to get one get the automatic. I like the cars but they just can't handle being driven like a "normal" vehicle, if you buy one expect to be spending $10-20k in service for every 30k miles you drive.
Picture I took! But in all seriousness classy car, I can tell you that the ghibli has a very throaty Italian sound. The crackles on the downshifts are pure bliss.
Hey /o/, I've got an important question if anyone could help me out.
So, there's a used car lot here where I live, and I saw a fucking beautiful 2007 Subaru WRX STI. It's going for $23,999. I was thinking of just dropping $10,000, and paying monthly. I'm 18, don't have any credit yet and I'm about to get a job. Also, I have $33,000 to my name right now.
What could I expect my monthly payments to be? Would it be a retarded idea to do monthly payments for it? I'm assuming it'll be pretty high since I'm only 18. Also, does it look like I'll be getting fucked over at all? I've always been super fucking skeptical of any kind of dealerships, but I want this car so fucking badly. Opinions?

OP here, theres also a craigslist ad for it. I called and I'm going down to test drive it tomorrow.
http://reno.craigslist.org/ctd/5341909659.html
First how old are you? How is your credit?
I worked with a 19 year old that bought a 2005 sti with 80k miles for 28k $ making 700$ payments.
If you spend most of a paycheck on a car, it's not worth it. Buy small things build credit wait get a better deal. Problem is kids can't wait, want now, no matter how screwed they are.
If you are not a kid and have credit then nvm, but you also gotta wonder how bad this thing was driven.
>>13969803
18, I have no credit. I was told it could be a good way to BUILD some credit. But, I would rather kill myself than pay $700.
I suppose you're right about the waiting thing. I just don't want this car to be bought by someone else.
And I'm taking it for a test drive tomorrow, so I'll push it and find out how it is.
My sister put water in the coolant reservoir because it was low. Do I have to replace all the coolant now?
>>13969720
I would say it's fine for the time being, but I'd put in some real coolant if I were you fairly soon.
>>13969789
Currently there is enough coolant and water in the Tank, will I have to replace it soon?
>>13969805
I'd say the water will probably be used up pretty quickly, so keep an eye on the levels over the coming days and few weeks. When it gets low, get the correct coolant and go to town.
My 1999 Silverado had a crack in the coolant reservoir for some time, so I was on the grind of filling it up with water every so often, but regularly put in coolant to make sure it was still getting what it really needed.
Well /o/ today I almost died
I was driving my jeep wrangler home from work and the front brakes completely locked up and sent me power sliding to the right. I counter steered hard stayed in my lane as best I could. It's a 45 mile drive and this happened the last 5 minutes of the drive right before my off ramp. My pedal was weak as shit. And my front brakes smoking up hard. Limped it home and tried to remove the wheel only to find the studs warped and the lug nuts too. Jeeps going to my dad's mechanic to get fixed up then I'm selling the fuckin thing since this isnt the first major failure i have.I'm probably gonna have like 4 grand max after I sell it so in the market for another car. Should I fall for the miatta meme?
Fuck yeah, gotta get a 90's miata so you can do the wink
>>13969613
One problem though bro I'm 6'4 and 240lbs will I fit? Realistically
Yeah you probably could just horribly uncomfortable and horrible driving experience
After shrugging off annoying noises from the rear brakes on my truck i finally decided i needed to waste my time fixing the problem, hammered off the rear drum and found this bad boy rusted closed and horribly worn brake shoes, hope nothings wrong with the drum

bah, its just a screw adjuster, either let it soak in penatrating fluid overnight or buy a new one for $5
odds are you wont even need to shorten it.

These feels go deep.
The second-generation CTS-V is a great performance car, and the Coupe variant is very sporty and is pretty good at the track.
But the CTS-V Musclewagon is the one that makes my dick hard. Why is this happening I don't understand please help.
Guys help please I think I have a problem
I can't afford one so I don't care.
>>13969514
pretty much this, but i like them
why do people weld their diffs? is it because they're too poor to get an LSD?
wouldn't it cause shittier performance than an open diff around a track since you'd just be skidding around?
cause drift car
Uh, yeah??????
That's the whole point, If these people had dosh they would have just bought an LSD.

So this is why the C7Zs are overheating.
800F Catalytic converter is 1.5in away from the oil cooler.
Every problem stems from this design error
a heat shield seems to work very well for those few people who acually track their C7Zs.

How is it that a company can put millions into designing a car and still fuck it up?

Americans invented the automobile, idiot
hi /o/ a distant friend of mine is selling his 2006 buick lacrosse cxl for $3,200. Does anyone here have any experience with lacrosses? Anything i should check for? and of course is 32 hundred a good deal for this car? Thanks a bunch guys.
>>13969035
They're W-body cars, so they're pretty bulletproof. The chassis debuted in 1988 so by 2006, just about all problems were solved. The LaCrosse came with either the bulletproof 3.8L 3800 series 3 V6, or the LY7 3.6L DOHC V6.
Either way a good, reliable buy.
Don't fucking buy it. You're going to run into little stupid fucking problems that are going to make the car undrivable.
Stupid shit man. Stupid shit.
Stray away.
>>13969102
Like what? The only problem W-body cars are known for are blowing transmissions on models with the supercharged V6 or the 5.3L V8, neither of which that LaCrosse has
Sup' /o/
My company is giving me a new car in 2016
But it must be an hybrid (Paris bullshit law)
Appart Toyota Auris, and Golf GTE, what exists ?
If you're getting a free hybrid then you might aswell make it a Mitsubishi Outlander - spacious, well equipped, AWD
>buy a hybrid
>LS1 and an afternoon
>nobody will know the difference
>>13968771
Too big for parking in Paris, but yeah it seems that Mitsubishi knows how to make hybrid.
All joking aside, what do you think will be the next big thing in the auto market after crossovers?
2 door rotary sports cars
Horsepower wars with crossovers.
Imagine all the mothers...
self-driving, windowless blobs
Hey /o/ remember when you guys help me find a thief back in 2013?
Well two years later he just admitted to the theft and justice is being served!
Just dropping in to say thank you!
