hey /o/
I'm moving to a state soon where all cars post 1968 require yearly emission inspections.
I have a daily driver with obd2 and a 100% stock engine, but I want to build something powerful and that means something pre 1968. I have about 8k all in for this project.
my question is, what are some good cheap pre-1968 cars that I can stuff an LQ into or something
>>14712544
montecarlo
or just do it right and make it pas emissions
I'm mostly considering cast iron truck motors due to how cheap they are.
>>14712578
don't fall for the LS meme, if the car you bought has a 350 or bigger chevy, or a ford 302-351 you can make as much power as an LS
I've been thinking and doing research on engine efficiency and such, and I've got some questions.
DOHC is popular over SOHC in smaller engines due to better efficiency of the head, yet they are rare in V8 engines because "cost and complexity". Are they too expensive to manufacture to cover the cost of being efficient?
If modern multiport injection systems are inefficient because of fuel heating, why aren't fuel coolers more popular?
If EGR's recycle unburnt fuel, thus increasing the efficiency of an engine, why do people block them off when they build an engine?
Also combustion engine engineering thread.
>>14712528
power, efficiency, and size requirements make for hugely different engines
DOHC isn't more popular in smaller engines because of efficiency nor are are large displacement V8's pushrod due to cost or complexity
the simple answer is that pushrods give a much narrower angled block in V8's and DOHC I4's are pretty nicely packaged to fit under the hood of a FWD shitbox
EGR's increase the amount of fuel burned given a certain amount injected, however they rob overall power and increase complexity/maintenance
>>14712593
Egr does not recycle fuel. Or at least that is not the goal of it. This is obvious because on most engines it is only ducked in off of 1 exhaust manifold runner. It is inert gas. Meaning that putting it into the engine doe not affect the fuel air mixture. Therefore you are essentially displacing the engine's displacement and saving fuel. A properly functioning egr valve is only open when you are at idle or very light load. The downside is that it is a valve that has unburnt fuel traveling through it and will always eventually stick open which robs power and makes the overall system more complex

Cheap reliable sedans for us yuropoors?
The best sedans are those where you buy the wagon version instead.

How does subaru's awd system stack up to traditional 4x4? I have grandparents with a ranch that i'd like to drive through, and was thinking of getting a 4 wheel drive suv or subaru outback or crosstrek
it's a meme buzzword
It's fine, but don't expect to rock crawl with a Subaru.
>>14712249
I'd mostly be going through grass and mud
Why don't all cars have turbos? Isn't it more efficient to reuse the energy coming out of the engine exhaust?
>>14712095
it's even more efficient to do direct exhaust injection
>>14712115
>direct exhaust injection
That sounds like an infinite loop of bad shit going into your engine

What you guys think about the Corolla facelift?
Looks better than the american model.

What's the cheapest most reliable used car you can get? Let's say you have a max budget of $4k and need something that will get you at least another 100k on top of whatever it already has.
So as an example: $4k can get you a 20** buick whatever with 70k, these cars typically last to around 200k etc.
>>14711975
Whatever car I find on Craigslist that has the best service records.
old mercedes diesel. it will be a slow piece of shit and fiddly interior parts will probably come off regularly but the drive train will outlast planet earth

How likely is it for me to get approved for a $4k car working as a delivery driver? I make enough to afford the payments easily but taxes come out of tips which I can't even prove I make, so I can only prove about 200$ every other week on an actual paycheck.
your credit tips are tracked on your pay stubs and W2, how else do you think you get taxed on them
start reporting your cash tips too
>>14711821
>being this poor
Shiggy diggy
to elaborate, your biweekly pay stub will show a gross pay and a net pay, one of which includes your entire income including all reported tips. that's what they care about, not the amount that your actual paycheck is made out for
pay attention and tally up your cash tips as you go and have your manager report them when he closes your shift. you will have to pay tax on cash tips which sucks but your income figure will appear to be larger

Hey /o/ what crossover SUV would you get? I do production work that sometimes involves travel and hauling gear, and I'm trying to do uber for supplemental income. What would you say is the best fuel-efficient SUV from the last 10 years?

Cant be older than 10 years to do Uber and Lyft shit. And I'd rather have a 4wd with something approximating a truck frame than an Accord with a fat ass.
