Hi All.

I read through the sticky, and it mentions the Repair Manuals but it doesn't mention anything about general upkeep guides.

Is there a solid resources to learn about upkeep for your vehicle? Like when to change oil and such

Thanks.

RTFM

in the back of the owner's manual there should be a maintenance schedule. basic maintenance stuff is pretty straightforward.

Computer scan shows cylinder 5 misfire.
Change plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. About that time anyway. Still throwing code.

Hook up in real time. Complete misfire at idle. 0 misfire over 2k rpm. Looking at a vacuum leak? If so where to start. I know nothing about the vac system.

I just replaced an AC hose on my 1999 Isuzu Rodeo that got damaged and will now recharge it with new coolant. Do I need to buy several cans to recharge it if it's empty completely?

Related question, if my ac system's cooling ability seems to suffer the hotter it gets, would adding a can of the stuff in OP's pic be the answer.

You can't just charge it up after the system has been open to atmosphere. a refrigeration system should not contain any non condensibles like air. the system would need to be properly evacuated before adding refrigerant.

I'm looking for my next car after totalling my Volvo. I'm disappointed by the lack of beige, brown, saddle, and baseball glove interiors. They're almost all black.

If you Google, you'll find many threads on interior colors where most posters say "I love black and only black!" It's almost like some kind of strange bandwagon. What's so good about black? Generally you don't paint the walls of your house black, and most furniture isn't black. It's austere and gloomy. So why is it the most popular color for car interiors?

I also noticed that many people say tan is "hard to keep clean" and "wears badly". Huh? Black interiors show dirt far more just like black exteriors. When black leather ages it forms light colored cracks. Black also ages quicker because it gets hotter in sunlight.

I want a nice warm colored inviting car interior, not a cheap black Darth Vader gloom.

Why do people like things I don't like? It's just not rational

Don't follow too closely next time OP and you won't have to find a new car in this tough world where people think differently than you

Having a little problem with electrics. If you can see it, the passenger high beam glows a little on low beam setting. I then switch to high beam, whole passenger side is lit while the driver side high beam never comes on and the headlight glows very dim. I've replaced all bulbs, replaced the step relay, and sprayed maf cleaner on the terminals (it was on hand). I'm just wondering now what wire(s) I should be replacing.

Pre-'87 Volvo 240s are known for having biodegradable wiring insulation, plus the car is just old. Check the condition of the wires for the headlights, and check all grounds for corrosion. If you find any corroded up ground points, unscrew them, clean the terminals and ground point with steel wool, and apply dielectric grease to the terminals and ground point before reconnecting.

>>14695296
I checked, wires look ok from the outer sheath, the connectors look a little stained and green looking, would I have to strip an remake a connector or would just cleaning the connectors work enough?

My Chevy aveo makes all I can describe as pigeon sounds on my left front wheel. Only happens when I go above 100km/h. Also seems to be louder when gusts of wind hits the car. Any idea?

Help, I'm installing new brake pads and the old shim holder won't fit into the caliper. Looks like the pads are a bit wider than the old ones were so I can only stick the actual shim and not the side shim holder into the caliper. If I try to lube it in and force it it goes in but then the shim holder ends up bending and getting stuck, which makes the pads not move. I don't want to install the pads without any shims, can I just stick the previous shims with grease on without the holder and let the long pins hold them attached to the pads? Will they rattle around and make an annoying noise or will they pretty much just stick to the pad anyways?

>>
looks like brembo shims.

do you have a proper fixed caliper piston compressor tool? fixed 4 pot calipers are a pain because when you retract one piston the other one usually pops out.

If they're retracted 100% and you cant use the new shims the old shims should be fine. There should be a leafspring retaining clip that goes between both retaining pins and contacts the pads and is designed to prevent noise and what not.
>>
>>14693897
Not sure if they're brembo's or not, it's my first time changing the pads on the car since I bought it and I bought c-tek pads without shims planning on reusing the old shims. The old shim fits on fine, but the shim holder that holds the shim to the pad doesn't. I'm not rebuilding the calipers so all the pistons are already retracted. Are you saying it's fine to just use the old shims without the shim holder?
>>
>>14693920
I've never actually seen a brake set up where the brake shim dosent hold itself on. If you're really stuck, try running old stuff and if that dosent work run without shims at all.

Brembos would be brightly coloured and say brembo all the fuck over the caliper. I guess its just a vehicle with what looks fixed calipers with 4 pistons
