Cars you like but don't want to buy because of their reputations
I'll start
Z32 300ZX
>hard as shit to work on
>notoriously expensive to fix and maintain for a japanese car
>most of them are complete basket cases now
If it weren't for them being such a nightmare to work on, I would totally buy one. I like working on and modding my own car and it makes cars that are expensive to fix and maintain much cheaper, but I hate cramped engine bays and having to take a shitton of things off to get to any one part.
>>14812793
every single problem that car had could have been fixed by changing the motor.
That big, heavy ass v6 vg30de?
it didnt have enough power to make up for its weight and size
they should have used a VH41 or a single turbo RB
>>14812820
Yeah, the engine is really heavy, just like every other japanese TT 6 cylinder (RB26DETT and 2GZ-GTE are both fat as fuck too). Still it managed to be quite fast. They managed low 14s stock which wasn't bad in the 1990s, and made the later 350z look like shit. On modern tires, a bone stock Z32 will keep up with a 350z with ease.
I heard the same shit a bout them, ended up buying one anyways and I fucking love it.
You're right though, you'll end up sinking a lot of money into it due to how expensive parts are (small aftermarket) and a lot of jobs that are simple one on other cars will take you a lot longer to do. If you do get one, the biggest thing to really worry about are the 20+ year old rubber hoses and lines in the engine bay, a lot of them crumble or rip and start leaking. Make sure you inspect the engine bay every few weeks for the smell of gas, the instant you start picking it up is a good time to go through it and change out all your lines and anything else that's fuel related (regulator, damper, filter, etc.)
Honestly though, as big of a pain in the ass as it is, I'd recommend one 100%. Probably one of my favorite cars, it really is a driver's vehicle from top to bottom.
General discussion thread for air compressors and pneumatic tools.
How much do I have to spend to get something relatively quiet?
I've burned through two switches in about 2 months. Anybody know how to diagnose this? The compressor is graded for 240vac but I have it pulling 120vac. Could lower voltage be destroying these switches?
>>14820865
Depends on your definition of quiet. Not even trolling, even expensive compressors can be considered "loud".
As a general rule though, any oil bath compressor is going to be much quieter than an oil-less. Don't buy an oil-less ever.
I'm interested in building a drift car. I've owned several cars in the past year and I really can't settle on one so for now I'm driving a MT 2006 xB. I'd really like to own a drift car that isn't too expensive...
S13/S14's are super overpriced I've found and most are abused or salvaged.
350z's are nice but I'm not sure what to look for, what mileage I should get (a lot of them abused but a lot of clean ones)
Miata - I've owned a 99 nB all though I hear they aren't the best drift cars. I'm 6 foot 4 so it's still a bit small for me.
Saturn Sky- I've owned one, I know there was a falken tire drift sky, however they're pretty pricey and I know my car will be beaten up.
Any suggestions? I'm located in Cali so most RWD cars tend to be overpriced.
>>14819972
S13 if you live in SoCal your fucked any decent car is stupid expensive. I live in NorCal and there are decent cars for decent prices. If anything travel to another state and pick up an S13.
I'm willing to travel. I'll travel up to a 6hr radius, I'm located in Corona. SoCal is a shit hole for buying cars. I used to flip but now it's just so damn hard everything is overpriced.
>>14820005
Nevada and Texas are good places to look. California in general is fucked dude. So many people and car enthusiast so prices are stupid expensive. A buddy of mine bought an s13 from a White Texan dude for $1600. Also buy cars from white people. They give the best deals. Mexicans and Asians over charge and hide details about the car.
As far as weather goes, when is it a bad idea to drive? In other words what conditions should I avoid as far as likely hood of accidents?
I know rain/snown and fog make it harder, but at what point should I be off the road? Should I go by sheer amount or weather advisory? Also what aboiiut high winds/gusts?
>>14819724
Visibility has a lot to do with it. If it's pouring so hard you can't see very far it's better to not be driving in that. Same with snow.
Oh and ice. Fuck ice, stay home.
>>14819737
Road conditions and visibility, as relating to your car. If you got summer slicks on and the roads are iced over, you don't drive, you walk. If the roads are super wet you drive slow, and if you can't see more than two car lengths in front of you you drive even slower.
As long as your car is physically capable of moving down a road (road isnt iced or flooded) driving is fine, but the more shit blocking your view the slower you go, unless you want to pancake yourself under a 10mph semi
>>14819724
>ice. 4wd, ABS, snow tires, ect do nothing when you have 0 traction.
My shitbox does fine in everything else because I know how to drive and adapt to the conditions. Except for ice. No amount of skill or equipment helps in 0 traction situations.
Why won't Toyota stop making ugly cars
>>14819351
clearly a lexus you fucking idiotic newfag sack of shit.
They did.
>>14819351
I actually like Lexus.
Why is the FJ Cruiser a meme car??
I need a DD for the city (meeting clients etc) that I can also go Off Road with on weekends.
I was considering a Wrangler but you guys said it was a girls car plus shit to drive (I have not had a test drive yet)
Either way I would probably get one of these wraps to make it more rugged and easier to clean after the weekend and a few other basic mods.
So please tell me more about the FJ Cruiser and why it is meme and/or a shit choice.
Also give me an alternative to both the Wrangler or FJ Cruiser that is similarly priced.
>Defender
The obvious choice, unfortunately no longer in production and demand is making prices rise.
Your idea to look professional is an FJ cruiser with a wrap? Is your profession selling Monster flat brim hats or wakeboards? Get a 4Runner.
>>14819180
are you one of those cunts in NYC that are constantly shitting up I87 on fridays?
fuck you.
>>14819180
everything is a meme
OK guys. I'm getting tired of my light pickup. It's served me very well hauling way more than it should and has never left me stranded. It's in great shape. But my only complaint is the lack of power.
I don't really want to move to a full size pickup because of the gas mileage. But it seems it's my only option to have any sort of real power. But I don't want a fuckhuge truck. I've never felt comfortable in a full-size pickup.
Any suggestions? Must be 4x4.
Magnum Dakota maybe. What's your budget.
>>14817746
Maybe 5 to 7 thousand.
Not a fan of Dodge. I've worked on too many Dakotas.

Nice, I like this kind of thing. Older cars in real life when they were new and top-of-the-line

me too buddy
Extremely rare photograph of an extremely rare car imported from a strange and faraway country that nobody has ever heard of. Also nobody knows what the camera is either or where the picture was taken. Also the tree in the background is now extinct
Is the rest of the world even trying?
>>14815506
Trying what? Putting lazer beams in tomatoes?
>>14815506
>muh german engineering
>posts a trunk lid and bumper
You're the reason modern cars suck.
>>14815560
>modern cars suck.
>le 'grass was greener' meme'
Fuck you and your 1968 Buick, grandpa.
I know that laws vary state to state, but generally speaking would it be legal or illegal to go from a complete stop to whatever the current speed limit is very, very quickly? I'm talking like launch control fast.
If you did a wheelie or the tires were spinning they could argue Exhibition of Speed.
reckless driving maybe
>>14819677
But what if neither of those things happened. In fact, what if you (somehow) didn't even make a whole lot of noise?
What you think about Octavia RS? I like it.

I need your advice /o/
I'm looking to buy my first car. After saving for a while I have 4k€ and I wanted to know if I should go with the 318i.
There are a few in my area (I live in Portugal) that are within my budget. All from '99/'00, Between 135k to 200k KM (84k - 125k Miles).
All manual.
Is this a good choice? Should I go for something else for this price?
If I go for the 318i, what should I look out for when checking the car/ test driving?
(Pic related is 135k Km for 3990€)
>>14817534
>318i
>BMW
>wasting your money on inferior products
>>14817534
For 4k you can import something much nicer from Germany, like a facelift 330 diesel or 325i
the 318i is very boring
>>14817577
Wouldn't I need to pay extra to register it here in my country?
I get the FCA is shit meme now
>Work for a local stealership
>Service trades
>PT Cruiser comes in
>Literally nothing but electrical gremlins out the ass
>Tell sales it's fucking fucked m8
>Decide to sell it as is anyways
>Sells it for like 4K
>Some sucker buys it and asks to get his money back the next day
Another greentext:
>Get a year old Town and Country in with 30,000 miles from Enterprise
>Take it in to service
>Take it on a quick test drive
>Honest to god every bump we hit the interior is rattling like you're shaking a box of legos
Word is before I got there the sales team sold a used Dart that shit the bed like 2 days later and the customers went to the owners to get the deal unwound.
>>14817054
I can't believe people though Chrysler being bought by FIAT was a good thing, they should have died when Cerberus bought them
> Wasting time on a Chrysler without an SRT our Ram badge on it
Really though aren't "gremlins" a thing bad mechanics have been blaming for their failures for about a hundred years?
>>14817078
Honestly I thought Chrysler had improved some but I asked the lead tech if this is usual per Chrysler products and he said yea pretty much everything we get in on trades that are Chryslers are shitboxes
Apparently our dealership also immediately takes all Mustangs made from 05-14 to auction cause it has an unfixable air bag light problem. Not sure if it's unfixable or if they just don't want to be bothered with fixing it.
>Work at a Kia/VW/Volvo/Porsche service department
I'm looking into buying an Impala as a second car to start working on my Caprice this summer. I know the GM 3800 V6 is a damn good engine, but don't have any experience with this "High Value" 3900 V6. Anyone work on them or know anything about them?
Car in picture is 2007 Chevy Impala 9c1, 126k selling for $3,900.
bumping with pics of the car in question
