Want to get an early N/A watercooled 911/Boxster but are afraid of the infamous IMS issue? Well I'm gonna try to change your mind
>What is an IMS
The intermediate shaft has been present on Porsche flat 6 engines ever since the original air cooled 911 all the way up to the 9x7.1 generation 911s, Caymans, and Boxsters
It's used to indirectly drive the camshafts and is in charge of engine timing
>What goes wrong?
The IMS itself is perfectly fine, the problem was when Porsche switched to watercooled engines they needed a bearing on the flywheel side of the engine, and with their infinite wisdom they decided to use a sealed bearing with a lifetime grease
What happens over time to a small handful of these bearings is that the grease dries out and it fails, causing the IMS to throw the timing out of sync and grenade the entire engine in seconds
The bearing on the opposite side is lubricated by engine oil and has never been known to fail
>How often to these fail?
Engines from '97-'99 use a robust dual row bearing that has a failure rate of less than 1%, it's the engines made from '00-'04 that use a weak single row bearing that has a failure rate as high as 10%
But don't worry just yet, general consensus is that if the bearing in your car is faulty it would have failed before 40k miles
In addition the best way to keep it healthy is to actually drive your car like a Porsche should be driven; low mileage garage queens are more prone to failure
>How much would this cost me to repair?
If you have a higher mileage car I wouldn't worry too much, especially if your car has a dual row bearing
Fixes include:
>replacing the bearing with a new OEM part - $100
>IMS Guardian - $400
>replacing the bearing with an aftermarket ceramic bearing - $600
>removing the seal and adding a flange that directly feels engine oil to the bearing - $800
The last option is the only true way to fix the problem, but I personally don't feel any of this is necessary
Hope this clears up some misconception
Good to see the best thread on /o/ return.
I like these threads. Dont want a porsche but love seeing all the info layed out
I know literally nothing. Redpill me on Saturn, if yall'd be so kind. Were they pieces of shit? Unreliable? Why'd they go out of business?
Saturn went out of business because they built cars that were so good the oil cartel had to shut them down
>>15684286
made good shitboxes in the 90's until GM fucked them over by making all of their cars Opel rebadges.
>>15684286
Saturn didn't really make "great" cars, but by normal consumer standards they were damn good. Saturn as a corporation was structured in such a way that employee input was vital in the design and assembly processes. Because of this, employees had a stake in ensuring product quality, and as such, nobody on the assembly line wanted to sign off on half assed work. Of course, once GM was facing bankruptcy during the recession this philosophy didn't mesh well with the way GM execs wanted to run their company. It was essentially the same story as Saab. You had people who cared too much about making quality automobiles losing out to suits who decided that selling broken pieces of crap was more profitable.
How do you deal with other people making fun of you and your car?
>Drive a 2009 PT Cruiser, handed down and used
>Can't really afford a new car because unemployed
>All I do really is drive to fast food places and park in the car park after going past the drive thru
>The workers at some fast food places have started making fun of me based on my car
>At McDonalds the Drive Thru workers recognise me and call me 'Meat-E Cruiser'
>At KFC I overheard one of the workers call me 'Dia-PT's' because I always order ice cream
>people always laugh at my car generally
>call it a womans car
>call it a gay car
>call it a stupid car
I wish I didn't have to deal with this. Is there a way to make my car more manly?
Stop buying fastfood you fat piece of shit
Maybe stop being so fat you fat fuck?
Just a suggestion fatty!
>2009
I had no idea these were made for so long.
I'm in the market for a used WRX. I know most of them will be beat to shit but I want to take a look anyway. I'm basically looking for anything with less than 150,000km that is close to stock.
Anyway, some things I'm wondering:
>Is there a specific model year that is considered the best (all I know is that 2008 is the worst)?
>Any major differences between the sedan and wagon/hatch aside from the obvious?
>Is a simple cobb tune recommended or worth doing?
>Anything in particular I should look for when examining used WRXs?
>I've heard that the STI engine they've been using since 2004 has a few issues (something something ringland). Does this also affect the regular WRX?
>Should I start vaping ahead of time? Or is it something that naturally happens once you own a WRX?
I like the look of the Bugeye the most, but they're all getting pretty old since the last year was 2003.
>>15682523
>best model year
This is entirely subjective, but all you really need to know is avoid the 08 model year WRX.
>wagon/hatch vs sedan
Just weight. For the GD/GG generation, the wagon is about 80lbs/35kg heavier. For the GE/GH/GR/GV's, the hatch is marginally lighter (we're talking like 25lbs/10kg).
>tuning
Most definitely, especially if you do any mods (ie intake, turboback exhaust, etc.).
The tune will, at the least, smooth out your powerband.
>examining
Aside from the usual leak inspection, pay attention to the power steering and how the engine responds to throttle inputs. Pre 2008 subies are known for having shitty ps pumps. If the engine is hesitating, could be a sign of bad compression or a boost leak.
>Engine issues
Ringland failure is more likely on the 2.5L WRX and STI engines, but it's really down to how the owner treats it. As long as the engine is warmed up before hooning and doesn't get lugged, ringland failure is very uncommon.
>vaping
If you're going to stance it like a fucking faggot and drive it like a retard and/or pussy all the time, yes.
Good luck on your search, and hope you find the one you're set on!
Pic related, my 05 wagon with a 1/2" lift.
>>15682684
Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. Great looking wagon you've got there.
I'm definitely not interested in any stance crap. I'm attracted to the WRX because it seems like a sporty yet functional car that is good for the Canadian winter.
>>15682736
Always happy to help a br/o/ out.
They're fun little cars. Easily the best winter car to have, especially with a set of good snow tires.
>be me
>drive pic related, it's a Fiat Uno
>no conditioned air, no cooling air at summer, no warmth in winter
>stiff steering wheel
>stiff gearbox
>if i have an accident even at 50 km/h I basically am lucky to still live
>if i have an accident insurance probably won't even pay me because the car is worth nothing and repairing it would cost more than car itself
Need advice for a used car, whatever is between 2005-present day. Nothing too expensive since I basically use my car to drive to work, and bars on nights out.
I already thought of Toyota Yaris or Ford Focus, but what are other cars that /o/ can recommend me?

I prefer the term "pizza driver". But yeah you got the idea.
How much street cred will a 6th gen celica GT (US spec) get me?
Downsides
>fwd
>130hp stock
Upsides
>hatchback
>can find super clean ones for less than 2
>can turbo it pretty easily
>not a honda
Would you rather a celica or a prelude?

Kobalt is honestly very good and offers the no hassle lifetime warranty.
Broke a ratchet of theirs because I had a pipe on the end of it, took it into Lowe's, they swapped it out in 5 minutes with no hassle.
Apparently Harbor Freight (Pittsburgh tools) now has the same kind of warranty on their handtools? Might be something to look into. Build quality looks half decent but even if it breaks, you get a new one.
Hello from Russia. Translate of text on picture: Germans prefer Lada more then Volkswagen. So, would you buy a brand new Lada?
Germans also prefer refugees over their country so no
Just look at this sexy car! It says: "I will make your life faster. And no one will look at you like you a virgin."

also it is confirmed that fwd 1.6liter Lada Granta SPORT is capable of hektik skids
I am so fucking sick of the "challenger is slow" meme. The challenger has the most HP of the three, is the only one that looks and feels like a muscle car, yet you Ford and GM fanboy shit all over it out of jealousy, Just admit you cant afford one and thats why you hate it. Mustang looks like a little girls sports car and the Camaro looks like a retarded tank baby

Has anyone of you changed something on the security system of your car? Or do you use something to improve the security of your car, for example a steering wheel lock? Any reports on success?
Some people I know e.g. installed a dead man's switch in a weird location, disconnecting the fuel pump or the whole car from the battery.

I had my 97 chevy pickup intalled with a kill switch that cuts the ignition. My current vehicle has a shitty alarm system that serves me pretty well for a $100 alarm. It has alerted me to attempted theft/vandalism twice. Almost shot them motherfuckers. Im glad too because my 97 used to get broken into a lot, they tried to take it, but they didn't find the kill switch thankfully. My current vehicle only got broken into once, they destroyed my wiring, and my steering column. and after that i immediately got an alarm system.
Story from a coworker:
He only owns a Golf but majored in electrical engineering and loves crafting stuff. He hooked a raspberry pi or something similar (i'll have to ask him again) up to a GSM module, sending him an SMS everytime the car is started. If a certain SMS is sent back the fuel pump gets disconnected from power. Not sure how insurance will act if it gets stolen and the car gets wrecked because the loss of power occurs in an (for thief and car) unpleasant situation.
Let the memes begin.
Based solely on looks, I'd choose AE86.
>>15695902
Having driven both and owned an MX5.
I would deffinately take the ae86.
Its far more fun, and more practical
>>15695902
Ae86 has a racing heritage more than just neckbeard faggots playing racekar in a middle school parking lot
>he's a ""car enthusiast""
>he doesn't do his own work and make as many parts as he can himself
Hahaha, is there anything more pathetic /o/?
The only thing worse is FF drivers tbqh
>>15694989
I think "car enthusiast" and "gearhead" are not necessarily synonymous. A good example of a car enthusiast would be Matt Farah. He's driven more cars than 99% of people ever will in their life, but admits he has no interest in working on them.
>>15694989
>literally have to forge your own parts from scrapmetal to be an enthusiast
Where did it all go so wrong?
not starting at 20k
They didn't design a 5A-GE for the car. Boxer 4 a shit
>>15692721
>gt86 looks best

>Subaru has best shifter

Absolute garbage pieces of literal cuckold shit.
