Hey /o/, just wondering if any of you guys use OBD scan tools of any description.
I was contemplating getting a scangauge, then I figured why not simply a bluetooth dongle and Torque Pro? I already have the computing power with a Android phone.

Anything a purpose made OBD scan tool can do over a phone app and dongle? Any particular bluetooth dongles you aut/o/bots can first hand recommend to either buy or throw in the trash?

Being able to read and clear codes would be handy, but I more want to keep tabs on EGR%, boost pressure and EGTs.

Also wondering if there's any other preferred apps. Is there a reason Torque seems to be the go-to?

Thanks man. I didn't realise there was such a thing as an "authentic" ELM327, and just presumed they were all cheapo chinese crap. Any link to the genuine article?

governments decided they were too dangerous and would hurt pedestrians more as opposed to inset headlamps.

They aren't strictly illegal in some countries but manufacturers design cars for multiple markets so its easier just to design to the lowest common denominator.
>>
>>15724004

Yep.

Also the reason why the frontal area of cars is so huge now, as this gets cars better safety ratings.

Can somebody on /o/ do a pro and con of wheel spacers. Im contemplating on whether to get them on my car or not.
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>15723726
Pros-
Can change where the wheel sits
Cam widen track
Ones in pic are much better than the shitty skinny ones that only allow you to use 3 threads of the studs
May make handling better.

Cons:
More load on wheel bearing
More load on everything technically
May adversely affect handling
>>
>pro
You get your desired fitment
>con
Reduced strength

There's nothing really wrong with running them, the ones in your pic are hubcentric too which is good but you have to be aware of the hub size of the car and the center bore of the wheel or it wont work.

It's don't if you drive fast or try to do wicked skidz

What happened to speedometers like this that were in almost every American car from the 40s to the 70s? Why did they disappear entirely? I think they have a really nice aesthetic

Once lots of Americans began to buy imported cars Detroit was like fuck it we'll just make our cars like the foreign ones. This is still happening today as you can tell. American cars were SO much better looking than any other cars when American cars were the only ones you'd see on American streets

Okay /o/ so I'm set on buying a comfy newish RWD mid size sedan but following my families experiences maintaining Mercedes and Jaguars I'm excluding Euro stuff simply to avoid the stress.

Currently I've narrowed it down to the Lexus GS, Infiniti Q70 Cadillac CTS.

I like the Q70 because it has a V8 option within my price range but the Lexus is going to be a lot cheaper to run in the long run and the Cadillac is way more fun to throw around. Pic unrelated.

What do, /o/?

Why did cars improve way more during the 1930s depression than they did during the roaring 20s? Just look at 1941 cars compared to 1931 and 1931 cars compared to 1921

It was only during the late 30s in the years right before WW2 that cars improved substantially. Here's a 1934 Ford which looks like a 20s car still. I think better production methods appearing due to pre-WW2 militarization led to better automotive technology
>>
wat

1941 cars were basically 1931 cars with different bodies

a 1921 Ford was a goddamn Model T a 1931 Ford was a Model A

the 20s had most of the industry adapting to production lines too
>>
>>15723094
During the 1920's, there were no car designers. It was just engineers designing the cars. If you wanted a good looking car, you brought it to a coachbuilder for a custom body

This changed when Harley Earl was hired by General motors. Earl created GM's styling department. He brought design and styling to cars. Suddenly, you didn't need to go to a custom coachbuilder to get a good looking car. He then invented the concept car with the Buick Y-Job to show what they were capable of, and helped design the GM Futureliners for GM's Parade of Progress.

Harley Earl became infamous during the 1950's. Just about anything good looking from GM at the time, he had a hand in. The Chevrolet Corvette? That was Earl. The Tri-5 Chevys? That was Earl. Those gigantic Cadillacs with the huge fins? That was Earl.

hi americans, aussie here.

i'm set on getting a nice v8 with a good aftermarket and naturally the ls is the easiest option for my engine swap, since they're available locally.

my only question is, should i do a turbo ls1 or a NA ls3?

I've done a bit of research and have this pros and cons list so-far but if anyone else can offer advice i would really appreciate it and i'll buy you cunts a beer when you're down here.

>LS3 aluminium block = lighter
>LS3 is NA, more responsive
>LS1 can make more power (a new ls3 costs about 8 grand here, i figure i can build a turbo ls1 for 8 grand that's pretty tuff)
>LS1 will have fun turbo sounds too

Get a ls2 from a wrecked hsv for like 2k
>>
>>15722697
Care to elaborate on what the benefits of this is?

I was finding ls1's for like 2k as well, but is the ls2 good for boosting?
>>
>>15722703
No ls is good for boosting unless you replace the internals
Ls2 is good price, better than the ls1 in every way, and can make big na power without too much work

anything is possible with enough money.

but easily? Nope. Not a chance in hell.
Why not just get a 89-94 model and 1.3L 16V swap it? Drops right in, and the 1.3L DOHC 16V is a fucking screamer.
>>
>>15722322
Not going to fit without significant front end re-engineering.

Keep in mind the Metro slotted below the Cavalier in Chevy's line up. 3800 Cavalier swaps have been done, but even then it required re-engineering, and a custom sub-frame built from scratch.

The Metro has a smaller engine bay. A 3800, as a 90 degree V6 engine, is simply not going to fit.

But why the 3800 anyways? It's a shit meme engine with no good points beyond reliability.

Has anyone ever made a car where the clutch is a lever on the shifter, like a motorcycle? would this work instead of a third pedal?

I'm inclined to believe cars have much stiffer clutches than bikes, which would fatigue your hand far too quickly.

Don't be a kid basically. In my opinion the turbo vws were made for commuting and going to the grocery store until every millenials figured it came with a turbo stock so they slap exhaust on them, boost controllers and tinker with a system that was not designed to be raced in the first place
They are very reliable and very fun to drive if you don't fuck around.
I don't even like VW.
Drove a gli with the 2.0T that was stage 2 and I was never so scared of pressing the pedal. They really can hd the streets pretty good.
>>
>>15722240
Why so you dislike the turbo sport models? VW and Audi sure has a habit of throwing turbos on regular cars like the A4 but cars like the GTI and the 337/20th editions I've seen beat to hell religiously for 150k+ with no serious issues.

As long as you're not banging gears it can take a beating. The biggest issues I've seen is boy racers damaging synchros but that happens to so many cars it's not fair to blame VW.
