Sup, /o/? I'm liking for some guidance on a new car.

I've got a Wrangler that I think I can get $10k for. I've had it for ten years, ready for a new car. It's been fun, but I've grown out of the Jeep lifestyle. My upper price range is $40k, but I'd like to only spend somewhere between $25 and $30.

I'm looking for the following features in a car, listed in order of importance:
1. Dependability. Outside of u joints, the Wrangler has knocked it out of the park with mechanical reliability, and I've thrashed on it daily. Over 113k on it, and it's been only regular wear items and this same u joint over and over again. I am a competent mechanic, I just don't like wrenching on shit at home after doing it all day at work.
2. Fuel economy. The Wrangler doesn't fit the bill, so it's out. I'm looking for 30+ combined mpgs. My job is an hour away, and getting 15 on the highway going only 65 is dumb.
3. Safety. Wrangler is a death trap, I'm about to turn thirty. Looking at life a little differently.
4. Modest off-road ability. It doesn't need to keep pace with a Wrangler, and I already know most stock vehicles can't. Mostly looking for a good AWD system for Michigan winters and mild two tracking for up north camping trips. Not Bundy Hill or King of Hammers. Inb4 winter tires are all you need hurr durr

So, I've basically narrowed it down to either a Subaru Outback or a Forester. I own a Crosstrek for the ol lady and I love it, but it's too small for extended camping trips with all the gear and both dogs. Alternatively, I might compromise fuel economy for something like a Toyota Tacoma or 4Runner. I wanted to buy a Murican brand, but they're all clunky junk as far as I can tell.

Fun to drive and gadgetry are negligible concerns, but I have driven a Forester with Eyesight and I loved it.

Tl;dr: me need dependable econo shitbox, you guys judge me and maybe make constructive suggestions.

Forester is literally the only car that will give you what you want so this thread was done before it started.

4runners will do everything you want but they are thirsty fuckers, you will be lucky to get 20mpg combined with the newer v8 models.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I thought, but I was thinking maybe somebody would have a comparable set of wheels that might be a better deal.

Dear /o/ why do you think this car did not sell very well? The GXP version seemed to have a good body style with a nice engine. While the Mazda Miata which is for gay men has less horse and torque and is more expensive sold better. Being a poor college student who wants a car that I can have fun driving for a price of 10k or under, do you think it would be a good purchase or am I just stupid?

Be honest, /o/

Would you rather have an old car that you spend time on because things occasionally need maintenance, or a new car that rarely ever needs maintenance besides regular oil changes?

So, I'm at a bit of a crossroads, I currently drive a 73 "pin-chero" mechanically it works just fine, but the interior is a bit trashed. Being that I'm heading off to college soon, do I sell it and buy something more respectable, save more money for something actually hood, or spend the next couple years spending way too much money undoing all the nig-rigging?

I'll be visiting US and I'll rent a Mustang. I'd like to do some funny stuff with it but don't know what kinda place I could go.
For example: in my country, federal roads are usually less monitored by police, so I can speed up a little bit.
Back country roads usually have speed traps, not cops, that are easy to avoid but State roads are filled with cops and random speed traps.

In US there's a fuck ton of cops on the roads, do you guys have any tips?

I'll be visiting south and west (from Alabama to Maryland) and I don't do anything stupid like racing in roads or risking ppls life, just want to enjoy a little bit of a sport-ish car.

thx

Country back roads are usually pretty safe, less traffic usually means less cops
Don't speed through Virginia, Cops there are super strict about speeding

Just googled and watched the trailer and basically its just futuristic racing like F-zero or something.

I've seen shows similar to this and have actually liked a few but that was based solely off the characters and the story itself the racing was just a "theme" and not the main focus of the show for me.

Seems kinda generic but i guess id have to watch at least one episode to see if there's anything besides just the racing itself to pull me in otherwise id get bored.
>>
>>15986990
Like most stuff like this, the racing is just a framing device. It's all about the team, the protagonist's hot french gf, etc. Which annoyed some people, IIRC. Still pretty cool.

The reason Initial D is like the /o/ bible is not only does it feature real cars and real driving techniques, it's now old enough that the cars in it are at the cheapest they'll ever be... or were 10 years ago.

it's a shame there's nothing else like it really but certain Youtube channels and old ass episodes of Top Gear work okay.

I am going to go buy a '09 Infinity G37x Sedan tomorrow; I can't find anything wrong/awful with this car, aside from nitpicks.

/o/ am I making the greatest mistake of my life, or the best decision of my life?

The common problems are well documented with these cars. Mainly related to Nissan still plugging that stupid truck motor into fucking everything.

With lux brands, you buy the service history, not the "deal" that you are getting. An 09 is usually a two owner car where the first kept up on maint, and the second just took it to jiffy lube every 10k miles. If you have partial records even that this wasn't owned by a woman or a basketball american, it's probably going to be a solid car.

Tell me if I'm stupid. I'm coming out of high school and getting a job to save up for a first car. I know what cars you think I should get (civics, corollas etc.) but I really want a pre-GM saab. I'm looking at either a mid 90s 900 non turbo or late 90s 9-3. I've heard many mixed things about saab especially in terms of the cost of maintenance. It seems people either hate them or love them.

I don't expect Japanese levels of affordability but how much of a money pit would I get myself in? I'm not the biggest car guy but I'd be willing to spend a bit more than the average person on the costs of the car. I intend to do all of the basic maintenance/repairs myself.

OP here. I'm in Melbourne (Australia) if that matters.
>>
So you've watched mcm episode on wasaabi and you want one too. They said that parts are pretty hard to find but not impossile. I'm from yurop and my neighbour had some kind of saab (dunno what model, looked similiar to your pic) and he didn't complain. He had it for like 10 years so I assume he took care of it.
>>
>>15986584
Haha, no I haven't actually, although I probably should now. They've just kind of fascinated me since I was quite young. Your comment's reassuring at least. I mean I don't intend to drive it too hard and I'm very good on general car maintenance so maybe it wouldn't be too bad as a daily driver.

Hello, I have never ridden a motorcycle in my life, and am about to start taking lessons.

I was wondering which kind of motorcycles would be the most comfortable to go back and forth from work in nice weather?

I tried to do some research and they said touring motorcycles are a bit complicated for people new to motorcycles, but they seem the most comfortable.

are cruisers comfortable?

Also, it seems Kawasaki Vulcans and Nomads get good reviews and are allegedly comfortable. They seem low priced and highly respected from what reviews I have read. What are your thoughts?

if anyone has any recommendations, please let me know. I have a budget of 3-5k.

Cruisers are the most uncomfortable. You want something with a seating position that puts all the weight on your wrists and hunches you over.
>>
>>15986454
doesn't that seem like being hunched over would get really uncomfortable after a while?
>>
>>15986460
In my experience the upright cruiser position destroys my lower back from the straight up and down motion.

A super sport on the other hand is tyring on your inner thighs from constant braking down hill and stomach muscles from holding that position but it doesn't hurt my back since its at a enrgonomic angle and I get more buff from using my muscles.

How do you deal with assholes trying to snipe parking spaces you're trying to back into? I'm such an autist that I only back in, and it pisses me off to no end when I'm reversing into a parking space and someone is creeping up closer to my ass instead of waiting for me to park, or worse: they simply snipe the spot.

Instead of pulling up like a mile past it and angle backing, turn as you approach it and straight line back into. No one would be able to take because you would be directly in front of it the whole time.

My personal favourite is the nc miata. Probably the only one i'd drive if i could fit in one.
>>
>>15986036
That actually looks really nice.
>>
>>15986024
I think it could be the nc, since theres a 2.0 liter 160 hp version with LSD. I own one and I enjoy the car a lot, tons of fun and nice times, and it isnt slow as you can read in the internet.
The worst gen is the nb I think, very ugly, VERY slow, but it has a good chassis if you want to play with it specs.

alright /o/ i figured out of all the boards you guys would have the most knowledge about accidents.

>tl;dr : got rear ended, guy left while police were en rout, no info, got his plate

so before i get into this i have to say this happened in Canada, so i'll be using km/h and some of our road laws are the same and different.

driving Sunday evening (our Thanksgiving holiday) on a two lane street. cars in front of me were going slow around 40 km/h the speed limit is 50. that's fine we're going slow. guy in the truck behind me starts riding my ass. so I flash my brake lights at him cause he can no doubt see over my car that the cars in front of me are slow too, i drive a little hatch back. drive of the truck gets mad, flashes high beams at me and then keeps them on. straights aggressively tail gating me and getting way too close. so the first time he didn't clue maybe the second time he will. now at this point i stop. cars in front of me were slowly down and so I stop. he's so close he slides into me and rear ends me.

he gets out saying im the cause of the accident cause I brake checked him. I tell him he shouldn't have been driving so close to me and high beaming. He gets right in my face and starts threatening me. I say if you don't back the fuck up im going to call the cops. I end up calling cause he wont back up. On phone with operator she can hear him yelling at me. Tells me me to get into car to be safe. I get in my car he starts trying to video tape me and get a picture. About 5 minutes later he gets fed up waiting and drives off while im talking to operator, tell her which direction color of truck and his plate. cops do a perimeter search cant find him. come talk to me. male cop said something about me tapping my brakes so it could be a 50/50 claim. female cop says next time just pull over we have too many dangerous people around here to risk an accident with.

so now the actual question: who would be found at fault?
18 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
my statement says he was driving close to me so when we slowed down the first time, he slammed his brakes and then high beamed me. then we came to a complete stop in traffic and he rear ended me.he then proceeded to threaten me and leave the scene without exchanging info.
