Long story short: just got job. Have wife and baby. Need to buy a car soonish. Living with parents so expenses aren't too high ATM.
What car would be a good investment in the long run and what sort of car (like sedan, SUV, ect.) would be a good choice? Safety is a reasonable concern.
Should I opt for a new car? Used car? If used then what sort of mileage should I look for to get the most value for my dollar?

Long story short, sold this kid a winter beater Jeep XJ for 1000 bucks. Great tires, heat worked, 4x4 works. Shit is just rusty, paint fade,windshield crack etc.
Next day kid is saying all this little shit is wrong with it. Kid inspected it before sale and test drive it and he is mechanically inclined.
Ive come to realize no matter what, ppl with feel they always get ripped off not matter how low the price. Fucking ppl being this cheap over winter beaters.

i love this because it was available with a stick only in north america and americans LOVE to talk trash about europeans not able to drive stick by simply referring to this engine when the automatic transmission-only driving license here is called “driving license for people with disabilities” and its illegal to drive stick if you took the exam in an automatic car (which you have to specially request since literally everybody does it in a manual and 99.999999999999999% of the driving schools only have manual practice cars)

Hilux Appreciation Thread
I've been driving these things every time I get sent overseas and swear my life on them. First in Afghanistan we went almost everywhere and they help up like champs. Some of the roads north of Kabul International were barely passable and I could see the truck bed and cab flexing independently. The road between Bagram and Kabul was worse and they still held up.
Then for the last year I was up at Thule AB, Greenland and drove around in an equally robust Hilux that saved my life thanks to my fucked up recovery from some black ice I hit. It was flipped back over, panels fixed, and trudges on to this day. They were of course used in equally rough conditions.
Top Gear impressed me, actual hands on use sold me on em. God damn you Toyota for not offering them stateside (The Tacoma is NOT the same truck FYI. They have very different designs).

I've passed the 90 day probationary period at my new job and my boss has flatly told me that I have my job secured for at least a decade so I figure it's time for me to replace my daily driver as it's about to hit the 200,000 mile mark and is starting to have transmission issues.
I've narrowed down my options to a 2013 diesel Mercedes E-Class or a 2015 Chevrolet SS.
Tell me what I should do /o/ I'm kind of leaning towards the SS at the moment but me and my family have had pretty good long term experiences with Mercedes and have had shit luck with GM products, but the V8 is tempting. What do? pic unrelated
