Long story short: just got job. Have wife and baby. Need to buy a car soonish. Living with parents so expenses aren't too high ATM.
What car would be a good investment in the long run and what sort of car (like sedan, SUV, ect.) would be a good choice? Safety is a reasonable concern.
Should I opt for a new car? Used car? If used then what sort of mileage should I look for to get the most value for my dollar?

>>16124778
buy a $3k beated civic or impreza.
when you have enough money buy a nice new car that you'll keep for 500 000 miles so that the "Value" doesn't matter
What is a good "professional" car?
With work I need to appear professional with clients, and I am looking at cars that can display such.
Im looking at the MKZ and the A4
Why would you want to have the same corporate bland they drive? If you're driving them around maybe pick something unconventional in the luxury department. Like an old Lincoln continental.
>>16124776
>>16124766
My point is nobody's gonna remember the kid that picked them up at the airport in a mkz but they'll remember that clean all black 1960s sedan. If you want to move up corporate America sometimes it pays to be bold. But if your set on the run of the mill corporate fuck boi car I'd make your company pay for it.
Get a focus RS or Mustang.
get that client on the front and let the V8 seal the deal.
honestly anything will be better than a shitty bland Bmw or lexus in glossy black
What's his endgame?
ONE
>>16124746
to make a car that makes the otists act like r9k
it will be funny
>>16124746
Same thing he's been doing since he got lucky with PayPal: create unprofitable, but fashionable companies propped up by gov't subsidies and public good will to make loads of cash despite being a charlatan.
I hope Tesla does succeed though. It'd be nice to see an American automotive company be good on the world stage for once.

Why don't you buy pure gas for your car? It's like you want to waste money with that ethanol blended garbage
Where to find ethanol-free gas:
http://pure-gas.org/
Why you should buy the stuff:
https://youtu.be/AnETtiRdTjU
Because my car makes 20% more horsepower on E85.
E85 is good
Pure gas is good
Mixture is not.

Long story short, sold this kid a winter beater Jeep XJ for 1000 bucks. Great tires, heat worked, 4x4 works. Shit is just rusty, paint fade, windshield crack etc.
Next day kid is saying all this little shit is wrong with it. Kid inspected it before sale and test drive it and he is mechanically inclined.
Ive come to realize no matter what, ppl with feel they always get ripped off not matter how low the price. Fucking ppl being this cheap over winter beaters.

shit if youre going to greentext make sure it atleast makes sense first damn.
So who here on /o/ actually turns a wrench for a living? We all love cars here, but who amongst our ranks gets to see the dirty stupid side of things?
If I wrenched for a living I probably would stop enjoying cars, so I choose not to.
>>16124318
This.
I know a few mechanics that are super burnt out on cars and only do the bare minimum on their cars.
>>16124318
That's fair. I'm actually a railroad mechanic, so most of my work is heavy industrial; locomotives, generators, bucket loaders, screening equipment. I only occasionally have to fix fleet vehicles, so I can actually enjoy working on cars on the side at my leisure without resentment.
"In the mid 2000’s, BMW was racing in Formula One with a V10 engine so it made sense to develop a V10 to power the next E60 M5 and E62/63 M6. The result was the S85B50. This DOHC, Double VANOS 5 Liter V10 developed 500bhp and for the US market it was mated to either an SMG3 (Sequential Manual Gearbox) or 6-Speed Manual gearbox. The 6-speed manual option was only available in the USA and Canada."
i love this because it was available with a stick only in north america and americans LOVE to talk trash about europeans not able to drive stick by simply referring to this engine when the automatic transmission-only driving license here is called “driving license for people with disabilities” and its illegal to drive stick if you took the exam in an automatic car (which you have to specially request since literally everybody does it in a manual and 99.999999999999999% of the driving schools only have manual practice cars)
>tfw no p60b40 e46
Fucking sucks they only made a hand full of street version gtr's, but I guess e92 and f80 are technically the same thing.
That gearbox is shit tho, the engine is designed for the 7-speed, the only reason it exist is becuase of the snow belt.

Hilux Appreciation Thread
I've been driving these things every time I get sent overseas and swear my life on them. First in Afghanistan we went almost everywhere and they help up like champs. Some of the roads north of Kabul International were barely passable and I could see the truck bed and cab flexing independently. The road between Bagram and Kabul was worse and they still held up.
Then for the last year I was up at Thule AB, Greenland and drove around in an equally robust Hilux that saved my life thanks to my fucked up recovery from some black ice I hit. It was flipped back over, panels fixed, and trudges on to this day. They were of course used in equally rough conditions.
Top Gear impressed me, actual hands on use sold me on em. God damn you Toyota for not offering them stateside (The Tacoma is NOT the same truck FYI. They have very different designs).
>>16124082
I don't like the new hiluxes anyway but my old '88 one does not give me any shit whatsoever, it's fucking indestructible
If i said some of the abuse it has taken on here, /o/ would shit all over me but if i were to have one truck for the apocalypse, that'd be it
They dont sell the hilux because nobody would buy it. If it wasn't for top gear memes, no one would even care.
Wonder how much of a pain it would be to import a diesel Hilux.
Already own a Tacoma.
What dream cars do you have that seem out of the ordinary? Mine would be an AE82 FX-GT Twin Cam, they're kind of rare here in Aus. What are yours /o/?
Some of the tiny japboxes in LHD.

Fucking Christ, quit Huffington petrol with the noongas ya sad cunt
>>16123927
That's why it's considered out of the ordinary you fucking thick dumb ass.
with the demand for orignal parts you could make a lot of money out of those rustbuckets.
they have factoryfulls of tagged sorted and catalogued parts in cali parts are not hard to find for these
I know what I've got. $40k a car. Lowballers will be tortured and raped then killed.
I've passed the 90 day probationary period at my new job and my boss has flatly told me that I have my job secured for at least a decade so I figure it's time for me to replace my daily driver as it's about to hit the 200,000 mile mark and is starting to have transmission issues.
I've narrowed down my options to a 2013 diesel Mercedes E-Class or a 2015 Chevrolet SS.
Tell me what I should do /o/ I'm kind of leaning towards the SS at the moment but me and my family have had pretty good long term experiences with Mercedes and have had shit luck with GM products, but the V8 is tempting. What do? pic unrelated
>>16123777
What sort of job is it? If you're doing anything where securing contracts or client relationships is important, you'd need the Mercedes. It'll make a better impression with customers.
Put some Holden badges on the SS, you cunt. Reverse bogan.
>>16123777
Get the SS. Reliable, goes sideways easy, comfy and fits the family.
>>16123786
>buy HSV front end
>stick Chevy badges on anyway
hey yall, need to know what kind of oil goes in this baby
heres a vid showing the engine (not the one in my car)

Olive or soy. Either is fine.
well i mean like, 15w30 or....
>>16123613
Olive is fine up to 75w100. That's pretty solid for this engine.
Is skipping gears bad for syncros? Should I use double clutch for that?
>>16123583
I don't think so. Unless you are going to heel and toe. Then it is recommended if allowed that you row thru the gears to use maximum engine braking force.
