Yesterday after work my remote key fob declined to work. I thought, huh better change the battery. Once I did it still didn't work so I set to testing the fault.
The original battery was still +3v from 3.4v so it wasn't actually the battery. The new battery also tests fine. The terminals are clean and test closed across the circuit and I've got continuity across the board within the fob and the switches even test good. I get a voltage drop when activating the switches suggesting that the RF transmitter is doing something at least.
So I guess the RF transmitter within the fob is either faulty or the receiver within the car is faulty. I can't think of a way to test the transmitter except maybe to macgyver up a simple resistive loop and diode circuit to see if I can induce a current which will tell me if it is transmitting or not, but that isn't going to tell me much else, the voltage drop suggests it is doing something. I can't even find any information on where the receiver is located within the car or think of how to test it. The locking system wiring and fuses are otherwise fine as the central locking system etc all functions correctly when powered up.
Any suggestions? These things must go wrong all the time because people carry them around with them.

I get the feeling that the dealership is going to charge me stupid money to connect it to a computer and then charge me stupid money to produce a replacement key and then constantly hassle me for follow up jobs for minor maintenance and service via any details I leave them. I've tried to avoid giving them any details when I had them sort out a few product recall issues the previous owner neglected to take it in for, they are pretty good at offering a complex sales/customer service thing, like I just want to talk to a mechanic.
This is a boring anecdote, but like the time I called up looking for a replacement hub nut and correctly sized spacer for a roller bearing they said "sure you can come in and talk to the mechanic, they'll provide the right one". When I got there they made me 'book in' with a sales person, decline buying a new car a dozen times. Listen to all the trade in offers (I got lots of coffee). Eventually I got to speak to the mechanic who told me he was a technician not a mechanic and he'd be happy to book a diagnostic session with the mechanic at a cost of £80+vat, or he could direct me to the sales team who could tell me about all the great trade in offers available at the moment.
Fuck those guys.

I gave my cat, Mr. Muscles, my first car. Cut a hole in the trunk with my sawzall and made a passage through the rear speaker hole so he could access the main cabin space from the trunk. Makes a great winter home for him and it keeps him outside the house.
Now that he owns his own car he thinks he's allowed in every vehicle. He's always walking under trunks trying to find a way in. If you leave the window down he'll jump in and make himself at home sprawling out on the seat wherever he may please. It's a challenge getting into my vehicle for work without him trying to slip in and go for a ride.
Once watched him attack my neighbors Yorkshire Terrier after jumping into their Traiblazer. He was walking along the hood of the SUV and climbed into the vehicle The dog went apeshit and dove out the window.

Are snow tires a meme or not? I currently have all-seasons but I feel like I could be doing better. I've never actually driven a car with them.
When the snow hits, the max I can go is about 25mph. Takes forever t o get momentum going from a stop.
Will they allow me to go faster? Which ones do I buy? I'm ready to make the purchase, I just need pushed over the edge and need to know which snow tires are good.

bought a beater pickup yesterday. 128k miles 4cyl 5spd. drives great, but the body is in pretty nasty shape. likely a cataract infested old timer owned it. Drove it 30 miles give or take going mostly 75mph and it drove fine. the only thing I noticed was a slow start and he said the battery needed replacing. I also noticed oil on the bottom of the truck, but he said it was the valve cover gasket and it has been sitting for 14 hours and no spots in my driveway.
basically my only real concern right now is when I pulled the radiator cap I noticed it has that brown look like some kind of additive was put in there. I squeeze the top radiator hose and feel a crunchyness like it is full of sand or dirt. It doesn't overheat and stays at the proper temp, but I'm wondering if it had a head gasket issue that was addressed with this crap and now I'm on borrowed time.
tl;dr
what is this in my radiator? will likely leave it is as and plan to replace hoses and possibly radiator/thermostat.

I think it is rust and sludge due to filling with tap water only -- no coolant. Hoses also get crunchy with time and calcification (tap water typically has high concentrations of calcium).

Hey br/o/s it's been awhile. I started a gofundme for a TRD supercharged 1MZ-FE engine I found on ebay(http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/361622525475?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true). I'm buying a ES300 for a donor car(https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/5897851129.html). I'm replacing the fuel lines this week and I'm putting in the Supra denso fuel pump. Hello fellow aut/o/bots,
Looking to visit the US next year and want to buy a car. Prices seem comparable to hiring a car, but with a lot more freedom.
Crown vic seems to be the weapon of choice as we will be road tripping around the country, they seem to tick every box and be pretty reasonably priced and available on craigslist/ebay etc.
How would an individual, being a non-resident, legally purchase and drive a car? I understand that it is different for each state, so this is mainly regarding California, as that would be where we will fly in and would want to get the car there to start our road trip.
Also where should we stop and visit along the way? Plan on being in the US for 2-3 weeks, drive from west coast to east coast
