Technical question. Thinking of a modern car that's stuffed with electronics and only comes with an automatic transmission (pic somewhat related), would it even be possible to swap in a manual transmission without needing to get rid of almost all electronics and implementing a standalone ecu or are the single components (ecu, transmission control, ESC, ...) just too hardwired?
Mercedes is shit. Only Turks drive that crap. Lexus is better and more reliable.
Anything is possible, but it would cost way too much. Yes the computer systems are all integrated, always checking to make sure each one is present.
Take a far more simpler auto only sedan, the crown vic. You can swap a manual in but the ECU on it's routine check will not sense the automatic transmission, it will then throw a Check Engine light and go into limp mode, not allowing you to go over 5mph. You have to have a tuner adjust the ECU to not look for the transmission on start up, fairly simple to do, but of course they have the software and you don't so it's a couple hundred dollars to push a few buttons. This is with a car that's been manual swapped thousands of times. A more unique project will require more resourcefulness and money to throw at it.

That it would be highly complex and expensive is clear to me. I just came to think of it while reading an article about an endurance race-spec BMW M4 where they pulled out some OEM electronics and spend weeks to convince the remaining electronics that those are not needed. However that were probably gimmicks like parking sensors, not something like the transmission which most certainly plays a role in the ECU's programming. But I guess you're right. Giving such a car to an experienced tuner and throwing money at him until it's done would do the job. Street legality is another matter, at least around here.

I just played GT2 for an hour with my 6 year old daughter. :) Love this game all these years later.
Just bought my first new car, I expected to deal with dealership bullshit but holy fuck my head hurts after this.
Preface: VW is fucking floundering in the North American market, diesel-gate and the VW unreliable meme has crescendoed into a shitstorm of unsold 2017 Golf GTI's. After a friend got a 2016 autobahn (loaded) I ended up loving the car. Luckily for 2017 VW added the Sport trim, which has all the features I wanted from my friends car within my budget (Autobahn was $37,000 out the door)
The Car and price:
2017 Golf GTI Sport w/ DSG (16miles on the odometer)
Going off of TrueCar pricing in my local area, it worked out to 26,000 out the door and 0.9% financing (excellent credit score ftw) That was my goal, since the truecar price had continually dropped the entire month (~$700usd drop in average) I figured what meat that was left on the bone had been long knawed off, and I would be lucky to get the 'TrueCar' price.
The Deal:
Get inside, ended up with salesman I spoke with a couple weeks prior. Drop the 'TrueCar' numbers on them, have to register with truecar on my phone before we could start negotiation. Long story short, on fighting over the price I 'walked' once, then got the price we were looking for. Tons of back and forth walking to the sales office for the sales guy, plenty of waiting for my father and I.
continued.
Acting like a smug asshole insulting the brand of car you want to buy then waving around prices you got off of random number generators like KBB and TrueCar won't get you very far.
The Finance:
They wanted to make back their money here, being complete cunts throwing a 3.99% APR at me when my credit score is in the 800s. This was the real fight, my father told me for every 1% of APR they stack on, they get a big kickback. So here it was serious back and forth between the sales guy and sales manager, this took fucking forever. They got it down to 1.9% but 60 months, I cant afford that shit. Politely declined and walked out with my father and didn't plan to return (Civic Si is alternate choice.) Almost get to my Dad's truck and suddenly our sales guy comes out the dealership in a hurry saying "Sorry Guys,! He (finance manager) didn't tell you the right numbers!" (MAXIMUM bullshit) More like I made it clear I'm as sold on the Civic Si as I am the GTI, so that's a real sale walking away.
They settled on:
27,000 Out the door (tax, tags, everything)
1.9% APR for 72months
$9500 USD + $500 USD VW bonus = 10k USD down
$257 USD a month.
No add on warranty bullshit or "Protect your Paint!/Rims!" crap. Car Insurance was fucking cheap, 60 a month (31yr clean record.)
The closer sales guy was cool, and was impressed I pushed them down so much. I wasn't really thinking he was actually impressed and I guess he saw that, so he pulled out a form that's for the dealership only to keep track of per car profit or loss. My car had "($1045)" on the form, meaning the dealership took a $1045 USD loss to get the car off the lot. I don't think its feel good bullshit, because the dealer literally had 45 2017 Golf GTI's on the lot, whole rows of unsold cars. Its so bad VW is actually delaying 2018 GTI build dates.
This whole process took 5 HOURS, and I stood up to leave 3 times before they got it right.
Car is fucking awesome btw.

No smug here, just had to be firm about what numbers I wanted. Didn't talk shit about the brand or anything like that.
Why are performance hybrids pretty much only a thing in the supercar/hypercar world?
Why can't I get a fast hybrid for less than 100k?
I get that they're expensive, but still, there should be a market for attainable sport hybrids.
>>17780027
I'd say it's because the hybrid technology isn't really worth it (in terms of cost or engineering effort) at lower levels of performance. It's more cost-effective to get a certain level of performance out of a regular sports car versus a hybrid one (with the exception of supercar territory).
>>17780027
>fast hybrid for less than 100k
Because the the entire hybrid system, and the cost of integrating it into the car, and the cost of calibrating it for performance driving, probably costs more than $100k.
How difficult is it to find an old car again in Canada/the US?
My father had a little white shitbox Lada Niva in Yellowknife more than 10 years ago, and I'd love to see if it's still around, maybe off the current owner to buy it. Same with his old Triumph TR6. If we can dig out the papers, could I look for them via the VIN or something?
Dude it's fucking Yellowknife. You guys have what, 10 cars between the lot of you? Shouldn't be too hard to find.
Lada Niva Thread?
Nobody would bother with an out-of-province inspection of that thing, so if it's still running it's still in the NWT. I assume you could just ask around hardly anyone there.
What does /o/'s significant other drive? Failing that what does your ex drive? If you don't have an SO or an ex then what does your mum drive?
What do you think about these vehicles?
What would be the ideal vehicle for your SO?
The previous two women that I've dated have both driven Fiestas, one a two door the other a four. They're nice cars to drive and excel pretty well in the city-hatchback roll, however like most modern cars the visibility is atrocious. Also as far as I'm aware they cannot receive a tow-ball. Obviously you won't be hauling a caravan long distances in a Fiesta but there's no reason you couldn't tow a small trailer when moving house. I can't help but think that tow-ball attachments are deliberately left off the smallest cars to force consumers up into the next, more expensive, size bracket.

Reposting from adv

Hey /adv/, I am currently in a situation where it might benefit my mom (who I currently live with).
My mother did not have a car after it being repo'd a couple years ago. I learned that the car is owed around 14 grand. Here's the kicker.
>18% interest
>340 payment (10 fee online payment + 330 for the actual car)
[A note, in one year, only 700 was paid to the actual car, the rest went to the interest.]
I looked into this situation, and found out that the car is under my brothers name since he had the better credit score. However the contract had this kept up.
We tried getting in contact with the dealership and the person who ripped my mother off, but the bank has the contract so not much we can do about this.
Until, my brother recently spoke to the bank about a deal in order to at least change the interest rate.
Here's the offer.
>pay 1500 by sept 4th, and the bank will lower the interest rate from 18% to 5% and the car payment will be from 330 to 265 a month
My mother does not make a lot, so she could definitely benefit from this offer. At first glance it does sound nice. But, she doesn't have the money to pay it.
My brother offered to chip in 500, where she needs to put in 1000. Knowing this, I'm planning on putting in 600, where she needs to cover 400 (to which she says she can).
I spoke to a trusted family friend's parents, and they told me to ask these questions.
>Is the bank legitimate? (It is)
>Does the 1500 go towards principal on the loan, or the interest.
>Does it change the length of the loan or is the same amount of time she has left.
>Are they going to be charging her any additional fees or taxes?
>How much time is left on the loan now?
(Continued)
>How much time is left on the loan now?
I'm going with my brother to speak to their representative about this. I'm going to ask the contract be written down, completely different from the original, and go from there.
What other questions or information should I know before heading into this?
Full disclosure, I'm 18 on college work study, so I've been saving up money for situations like these and college.
I'm not in a position to easily find a lawyer(if it has to go that FAR).
Thanks for reading, I'll be here for a while.

Fucking kek, you're better off spending 10k on a Tacoma and the other 5k on dragon dildos to shove up your ass
Tacoma, Frontier, Ranger. That's about it. S10 if you're really on a budget. Dakota is garbage.
If you want good mpgs get the 4 cylinder and 2wd. 2wd makes a huge difference.
Closed the door one day and this piece fell off of the visor thing. Sorry don't know the name. It must have broken off but it still fits perfectly it just won't stay. Would glue of some sort do the trick? I want it where nobody notices when I sell it one day.
>>17778786
This is with me holding the piece on here, but if I take away my hand it just falls
just glue it or double-side tape. Keep in mind in the future if you're re-doing the headliner material you will need to pry it off
>>17778800
I won't be redoing anything, but Yeah what kind of glue? And just glue it and hold it up there? It's hot where I live idk if that affects it or not. I don't want it to fall right away
I have a 1999 Toyota 4Runner sr5 I recently purchased. The brakes don't work at all like no matter how much I pump them. I changed the rotors and pads, that did nothing. I went to bleed them and started from the back and my wife did the pump thing and they squirted fluid like they should and went to the front and barely anything would come out, I did this about 10 times and nothing still very little came out. I have the 4wd abs and I cracked the line on that and it had fluid coming out and from the t valve and the flex line it would come out so I feel like I have a caliper issue or master cylinder issue. I just need some help on figuring it out. Picture unrelated.
>>17778748
Is the brake booster actually connected to brake lines? If so, I think it'd be best to just get a new brake booster, sounds like that one is shot to hell.
Also, as a side note: have you checked for vacuum leaks?
Good luck, my man, with a 99 4Runner you will need a whole lot of it.
