How can you get better performance out of a naturally aspirated engine without turbo- or supercharging?
Exhaust headers? Muh cold air intake? Boring the block out?
>>16399767
More rev
>>16399767
it can be a lot of work.
You can:
port the head(s)
put in upgraded/more aggressive camshafts
upgrade the valvesprings
put in bigger valves
put in adjustable cam gears
swap out the pistons for forged units with a higher compression ratio
a thinner headgasket to help increase compression
forged connecting rods to eliminat a weak link
and even changing the crankshaft. Puttin in a crankshaft with a longer stroke will increase the displacement but reduce how high it can rev. Putting in a crankshaft with a shorter stroke will make it rev higher and rev quicker, but it will reduce the displacement, potentially lowering power output.

supercharging isn't that difficult. dudes have been bolting 2 lobe huffers to their hotrods since the 30's.
How do I get this good?

I'm a beginner driver looking for a car. My question is, how do you tell if the brake on a car is worn/ruined?
I test drove a 2008 Honda Civic coupe recently that felt strange to drive. In other cars I've driven (Toyotas), when you depress the break the car starts to slow down immediately and in proportion to how you depress the break. With this one, the break was responsive but it seemed like I really needed to step on it to make it slow down which threw me off.
Is that normal for this type of car or is the break fucked? The car was apparently in a minor accident in which the impact was from the front side, but the claim was under $3,000.00. The dealer claims it was minor and that cars like this sell all the time, but this one also had very low mileage. I most likely won't buy the car, but I would like to know for future reference if the car just handles differently and I wasn't used to it, or if there's a chance it might genuinely be fucked. It looked really nice (brand new even) and clean. Seemed almost like a steal (less than 100k miles, around $6000, only eight years old).

A newer Civic like that should brake like a new car, it could be a lot of things, most likely fairly minor.
In saying that, stay clear from anything that was in a 'minor accident' from a dealer. There are so many cars on the market, and you are clearly looking for something pedestrian as fuck, so just find one that not only looks right, but drives right
>>16399440
I'm having a tough time. It seems everything within my price range has been in an accident.
>>16399158
Could be that the brake booster is fucked. Here's how to fest it:
1. With the power turned off, pump the brake pedal a few time until you can feel it getting stiff
2. Depress the pedal slightly, just so you can fel the slack come off and then add little force but not so much that the pedal moves
3. Turn the engine on while doing this
If the brake booster is working, you will feel the pedal go down.
2014 Mustang 5.0 or 2007 GT500?
I do not want IRS and I do not want a 4.6L
>>16399137
5.0
anyone?
>>16399137
>I do not want IRS
why?
My car can only contain 1.8L but I want to upgrade to 2.4L. Can I just replace the gas container in the car with a homemade one?

I want to put more fuel to my car my man. It's possible?
I recently had a radiator hose replaced at a garage as the fan cut into it , the garage informed me they tied the hoses back with cable ties to prevent the chaffing happening again.
A week later im driving the car back from seeing family for xmas and a hose blows off and looses all coolant on the highway. I take a look at the engine and whilst looking for the leak i notice the radiator fan is unplugged.
I leave the car to cool and wait for a recovery truck. When it arrives the guy tries to start the engine and it blew blue smoke out the tail pipe and juddered and died.
Im now back at a hotel paid for by the recovery insurance. And i have a few options I can have the car towed back to my family and get a wrecker engine put in by a friend. Or have it towed back to the garage that neglected to plug the fan in. But the recovery insurance have told me it will cost them $1000 to have the car towed to my home address and to the local garage that did the work. the insurance company obviously dont want me to have the car towed so far and have already offered me a rental. I havent a clue what to do as the car is only worth around $1500 although another engine would only be $400 i don't really want to spend more money on the car. And i would rather buy something a bit better as i can afford another car around $3000

Buy a 3k Civic
Make sure it's manual
>>16399107
this
Make sure your next car has a temperature gauge.
My friend tells me I should wring the shit out of my engine on my GTI pretty much 25% of the time I drive because these types of direct injection engines are prone to carbon build-up. This shit true or a myth? I googled this a bit and it seems to have some validity...
>>16398513
possibly if you use poor quality fuel.
if your worried use premium . shell or BP ultimate have special additives that prevent the build up of carbon on the cylinders and components.
That's what Seafoam is for. Empty a can into the oil about 500mi before each oil change clean the gunk out.
>>16398513
Ah, the good old Italian tuneup.
Does shifting at a lower RPM save gas or ruin the transmission? I've always shifted around 3k rpm to save gas rather than revving it up and my dad keeps telling me its going to ruin the transmission
>>16398424
What car you idiot
>>16398432
98 Honda civic
>>16398424
Your dad is retarded.
Shifting at a lower RPM will not hurt the transmission provided you can shift smoothly. shifting at a lower RPM does help with fuel economy minutely but it does help. I generally shift around 2500-2700 rpm. Mind you my redline is 6500.
This is my Morris 1000, a classic English Car.
It's designed by the same guy who designed the Mini Cooper and I use it daily.
I bought it with no knowledge of cars or how they worked, back in 2014. Since then I've replaced the wiring loom and done a lot of work on it myself and have had it resprayed, but it's just failed its MOT/road safety test.
It needs several panels cut out and re-welded. Is MIG welding a difficult thing to learn, or should I leave this to a professional, having never welded before? I'll post pictures of the work that needs doing.
Offside where the rear spring connects to the body of the car is pretty rotten. Needs cutting out and needs a panel re-welded in its place.
>>16398230
Anything can be done by yourself, all it take is practice. Just don't give up. The only thing it takes is money really.
Nearside front end of the leaf spring. There's a hole in this section that goes through to the rear passenger's footwell.
what car is this?
DMC Delorean

What are some cars under $10k that you really like but can't get for whatever reason? Explain why you like the car and why it's not accessible to you. I'll start

I just love the little off road go kart design that you can take on the street. And the top comes off for those nice days.
>why I can't get one
I live in the rust belt and these are made out of compressed rust in the first place so finding one that isn't going to fall off the frame going around a corner is pretty much impossible here
>>16397281
>>16397281
Del Sol. Finding a rust free one that also is manual with a decent engine is impossible anymore
not enough garage space
might be able to get one by february if my land lord does anything to the god damn ukranians
a $12,000 bike btfos every single car imaginable on a track

>>16397204
There is literally no difference between the newer gen GSXRs and older besides some meme electronics. A $2,000 would be just as effective tbqh
Yet slower than a 2k gokart
>>16397256
Not true in the hands of a GP skilled rider. For average track junkie yes it's pretty similar but the lap time differences for a new gsxr compared to one of the early EFI models is night and day when ridden by someone who knows their shit.

>finish up timing belt service on car a few weeks ago
>have to set ignition timing but too lazy to do it the right way
>just spin the CAS while revving the engine, when it sounds more or less right I bolt it down and leave it

yeah I know it's a 30 second procedure but I'm lazy as fuck and didn't feel like looking for my light. post good car / wrenching feels you have had recently, haven't seen this thread in a while

Yeah, I can do chevy v8s like that clocking the dizzy pretty well. Within a degree, I usually err to retarding the timing a hair.
4cyl I'm not quite as good with, but I get damn close most of the time.
