Ok /o/tists, I'll be getting a shitbox for my GF as a learning car. I've no doubt she'll kill the engine after a year or two.
The car in question will be underpowered, old FR car, like Volvo 240, e36 318i or Merc 190 2.0d in manual.
Here comes the question (assuming she won't wreck it) - how money consuming is adapting an engine that was offered only in ff cars, namely the VW V5 AQN, to a gearbox from FR car?
Answering the question of why - because I like the idea.
>>16540725
Engines aren't built for specific orientations. That V5 should have the same transmission bolt pattern as all of VAG's 4 cylinders, so a transmission from say an Audi A4 should bolt up.
Honestly, your biggest worries will be:
1: finding the right transmission. Dig through the VAG 4 cylinder parts bin to find what you need. I can almost guarantee what you need will be from an Audi though.
2: engine mounts. No mounts exist for what you want to do, so you need to figure that out yourself. Not terribly bad, but still a legitimate concern.
3: propshaft. You need a proper driveshaft from the transmission to the rear differential. Again, not a huge concern. custom driveshafts are made all the time by certain companies.
4: The big thing that is more likely to sink this build before it begins. The ECU. You need to find a way to run this sonovabitch without making the computer piss its pants at missing sensors
>>16540773
Hmm, I know about the engine mounts, but audi gearboxes won't work, they may be bolt on, but they propel front wheels, not rear (unless quattro, but I'm unsure if I can modify them to put all power to the rear). Also with different gearbox than original one I have to modify driveshaft, which is something I'd like to avoid.
I thought about getting lets say an e36 318i, and, after its done its purpose, adapting only the engine to the gearbox (since its the same as in 320i, meaning it can handle 170 hp easy).
Is there a reason why you specifically want the VR5? Do you have one sitting around or do you just like the thing?

Daily reminder that if you didnt start riding dirtbikes as a child you have no real skill as a rider.
Which is better for a used car all other things being equal.
1. A 3 year old car with 150,000 miles with regular maintenance and upkeep, pristine condition and a clean vehicle history
OR
2. An 11 year old car (same make and model let's say, jut a previous gen) with less than 30k miles also in pristine condition, regular upkeep, and a clean vehicle history
Which in your opinion, all things being equal is more important, the age or the miles?
Obviously 2.
50k miles a year is horrific, especially if those are city miles.

Are you retarded.
This is a retarded question
What is the ultimate "Fuck you" car?
I dont mean in a flashy showoff type of 'fuck you', but as in the design of the car itself being a massive middle finger to the current car industry and one that squeezes out the maximum amount of butthurt from purists just for existing.
What cars fit that criteria? The FF/GTC4 Lusso sort of fit that mold but theres not enough pure autistic screeching stirred up by their mere presence on planet Earth.
Honestly? Probably the first gen Porsche Cayenne.
I mean,
>Porsche, a German sports car manufacturer famed for making cars with the engine at the back
>decided to make an SUV
>with the engine at the front
>that looks like THIS
>and sells by the fucking millions
>>16537909
Oh, and also
>not air-cooled
>no boxer engine
It single-handedly saved Porsche in terms of sales figures and purists absolutely despised every single thing about it.

First official meet of 2017, and the first official /hou/ meet in quite a few months.
Next meet will be meet #7 - our one year anniversary run. It's been exactly one year today (January 16th) since /hou/'s first meet, and we've since branched off and developed our own brand dubbed Night Wave. Our Houston charter still remains our central hub as we expand elsewhere, and in celebration we'll be doing our first publicized meet re-run.
This meet we'll be commemorating our first meet by running a lap of the Brazos route, dubbed the Circuit of Dagumi. It will take place on the 28th some time around sunset, so about 5:00 PM.
Learning from past meets, we won't be meeting somewhere distant from the starting point, we'll be meeting at or near the location itself. This is the exact starting location for the route:
https://www.google.com/maps/dir//907+Bains+St,+Brookshire,+TX+77423/@29.7863818,-95.9923246,13z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m8!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x86413bb6d1b9ae9f:0x5ec6a81e1ef97588!2m2!1d-95.957305!2d29.7863119
So if you have any suggestions on where to group up at nearby, post 'em here. Possibly Katy Mills.
Report in if you're going, post your vehicle in thread for ebin poster. Stock up on dash cams for footage.

Is hammering out your cat a good way for your car to backfire?
I hear anti lag is the way to seriously spit flames but I think the cons out weigh the benefits? Is anti lagging even good? Pic sorta related. I might swap an s54 into it
>>16542990
Why do you want to split flames out of your exhaust?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMGxPiZkrhY
>>16542990
So you are either gonna hammer out you cat or install an anti-lag turbo setup..... that's like deciding if your gonna live in a cardboard box or in a mansion.
Of course you're a Beamer faggot aren't you?
>>16543012
Because racecar
And I'm bored.
I have a Ford Explorer 2002 and I'm going to replace the battery. Do these models have some meme fancy codes I need to figure out before changing the battery like the ones in the 2005 Ford Freestyle? My friend changed his battery on his Ford Freestyle 2005 and then his throttle messed up and later on he fucked up his CVT transmission.
>>16542803
What the actual fuck are you talking about? How can a battery fuck up a CVT like what....?
>>16542803
It's just the transmission was shit
Just swap the battery. Anything that happens is pure coincidence.
Tell me what car I probably love:
4/5 Seats
Doors don't matter
Great quality brand / Not super expensive maintenance
Engine Rating: atleast 7/10
Confort Rating: atleast 6/10
Handling: atleast 9/10
1990-2017
Not more than 25k $
Must be German/Japanese
Preferably a Small Sedan Coupe type of car
Internationally loved (mostly)
so basically a V8 BMW or Mercedes
>>16542434
Nigga I said Not Super Expensive Maintenance
Needing some advice, I'm looking to buy a used 2013 Ford Focus to replace my aging 96 Jeep Cherokee. The dealership has it listed at $7994 @ 83k miles on it. Is this a good deal or should I look for something better? I was wondering why it was so cheap due to the model year and I saw there were a ton of negative reviews due to the transmission being bad on it and it has me nervous to commit.
There is a 2014 Ford Focus at the same dealership with only 10k miles but it's listed at 13k.
I'm just looking for a car that gets great gas mileage (I drive 30 miles to work every day almost), is reliable, fun and has decent creature comforts.
I'm 21 with no credit built up, so my budget is fairly limited at 6-14k. If you guys could provide some sage advice that would be amazing. Thank you.
I live in Fremont Nebraska if that helps any.
>>16542061
Don't buy it if it's an auto. The DCT in those is literal trash. If you don't have credit get a sub 5k car off of Craigslist and pay for your fuel with a credit card for a few years
I had a bud get a manual and the syncros were fucked at 40k miles
>>16542226
Your friend is a retard who was probably floating gears poorly.
I woke up today to find that some cunt had side swiped my car overnight. Now it won't start. It's a 95 Ford Mustang and there doesn't seem to be any major damage to it, just a missing driver side mirror. It doesn't get turning the key doesn't seem to get any power, let alone crank.
I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on what to check, and if the car has a fuel shut off switch.
Pic taken from a google.
>>16541979
The battery might be dead, even if there starter motor runs there may not be enough power to spark
>>16541979
>missing driver side mirror
The impact shorted the mirror and drained your battery. Fix wiring, then recharge or replace the battery.
>>16541979
Car should have a fuel shut off, it's usually in the trunk.
I was cleaning out my father-in-law's closet and found a BNIB MSD 6A ignition box. Would adding this to a 94 F-150 with a 351 make a difference in gas mileage?
The ignition setup in the truck right now is an MSD coil, cap, and rotor, Ford Racing 9mm spark plug wires, and NGK copper plugs. Otherwise, totally stock engine.
>drives a big trucc
>cares about mileage
>>16541890
>totally stock engine.
It would make no difference, unless you are routinely over 6,000 RPM.
>>16541955
Never over 6,000. Hell, rarely over 4,000.
Is it a good idea to sell this polo car for 1800 usd equivalent and buy myself a golf mk4 with the 170hp engine?
theres also a v6 engine with 24 valves thats cool too.
The problem is mine is really fucking reliable so i dont know if i should sell it.
>>16541860
uh self bump
>>16541860
>sell this polo for 1800
never gonna get that much
>buy a golf mk4
never buy a VW
>>16541860
Is the 170hp engine the 1.8T? If so, I would go for that one. I would also check the equivalent Audi A3s also.
$1800 in euros is quite high for an old Polo, unless you live in Denmark.
Alright /o/, I'm in college, and I need a school project for the next three months. I was talking to my uncle(who happens to be the shop teacher on my college), and he said he needs a new throttle body for his Kadett GSi.
I've decided to make a set of ITB's for that engine (C20XE). Here's the plan:
>Find a spare head
>Scan using office printer
>Use Solidworks Autotrace to determine the base flange shape
>Cut from 10mm aluminium (using water jet cutter)
>Mill 4 blocks that smoothly transition from the port shape to a round 42mm bore (using 4 axis mill) and hold the injectors
>Weld blocks to base flange
>Extend blocks using round tubing
>Weld in a top flange to stabilise the piping
>Top it all off with a set of 422mm GSX-R1000 throttle bodies
>Make inserts between the throttle bodies so the manifold pipes are perfectly parallel
Am I forgetting something here?
Also, I need to clock 280 hours doing this, including research, design and welding practice. Can it be done?
>Scan using office printer
Dooooog. Don't you have an electronic caliper? Don't do this half assed shit.
what a waste of fucking time effort and money
arnt you paying these fuckers to teach you?
i mean like the average professor makes damn near 100k a year and they just say: HEY I DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO TEACH YOU SPEND 280 HOURS ON WORTHLESS BULLSHIT
think of it this way:
that 280 hours at $8.10 an hour is over $2000 of wasted time
for me (a non college student who went straight into the workforce) its closer to $5500 in lost revenue
is your time that worthless to you?
in 2 years whatever shit you make will be in the trash and somene like me will have 2 years of on the job experience over you
