I have a couple of questions. I don't owe money. I'm not about to get my car towed. I simply don't understand this situation and these laws and was wondering if someone could shine some light on it for me.

When you get your license at any age, you are told driving is a privilege, not a right. However, you are NOT told a few things you should be. The few in question are that the cars you buy are not owned by you. They are your responsibility, yes. But they are the PROPERTY of the USA (oh, these questions pertain to the US, btw).

First, how is that possible? Why is it that they are the property of the government? How did this happen and why? It doesn't make sense that I can pay for something, and it not be mine.

Continuing on, we are also expected to pay for insurance (in most states). Registration was supposed to be the government's answer to tracking vehicles and making sure they are "legal." So what is the excuse for insurance? Why are we forced to pay for something that ultimately is rarely needed and often a major problem when it actually is.

Not only this, but insurance isn’t even a government entity. Insurance companies are all private companies. How is it a 3rd party could be mandated to be given business when it isn't a government company? And why is it even necessary? Everyone knows the company doesn't actually protect you or your "property," which is a discrepancy in the contracts. Let’s ignore whether or not insurance is actually useful and just keep topic about why/how it happened.

How did this system come to be? How did it get to where it is today and why? This situation is like me starting a computer company, getting government mandates to force you to pay insurance for using your own computer, you paying me a monthly just for having it, even though you bought it, built it, repair it, and use it all on your own. And you don’t actually OWN it. Then, if something breaks, you are still responsible for the costs of repair AND I increase your monthly payments. You wouldn't accept this if it was your computer, how did this happen with the auto industry?

Just curious to know all the legalities behind this.

>the cars you buy are not owned by you. They are your responsibility, yes. But they are the PROPERTY of the USA

I understand the gist of your viewpoint. You feel that if you don't pay registration or insurance that the car is taken from you or that you cannot use it. In that sense, you feel it is not really your property because someone else has powers over it.

But that is more false for cars than it is for your own home. In the USA, if you don't pay for the license, the car simply doesn't have a current license plate tab. If you don't renew your drivers license, you simply don't have a current license. It is not wrong for the gov't to require cars have license plates or for drivers to have a valid drivers license. Nor is it wrong to require insurance even though lots of people drive without insurance.

The government could easily check if cars have insurance or not by putting up robot camera scanners. They scan every plate and VIN and then check the database for valid insurance policies. But the gov't doesn't do that right now just like it doesn't have a true gun registry of every gun. The freedom activists have kept the gov't from doing that.

BUT for homes, your argument is valid in a metaphysical sense. Even though you own your home/property, if you don't pay taxes on it, it will be taken away from you (foreclosure) and sold without your permission. Now, that really doesn't feel like home or land ownership.

And the rich can do tricky things to take away your property. The CEO of Facebook Mark Zukurberg [SP] was suing many owners of nearby properties to his Hawaii estate and taking away the property rights after paying them for it of course. So people who might not want to sell are forced to because it costs too much money to defend themselves in court day after day month after month. The cost of defending your rights can cause you to lose simply to someone willing to play the attrition game when they have a loophole to file lawsuits
>>
I bought a car and didn't have to register it or put insurance on it for 6 months. The key is that I didn't drive it.

The government doesn't own your car, the own the roads and infrastructure you drive it on.

Since you're operating it on the government's property, they want to make sure you and your vehicle will be less likely to damage their property, and if you do damage something on their property you'll be able to cover it.

Sorry for another "is this car good thread" but I was hoping for some help. I found a car online today for fairly cheap, it's a 1995 bmw 3 series 318i. The guy says it runs well, but has 200k miles. My other concern is that it is RWD and I live in Utah. He says it has all season tires and he can't get the car to slip very easy. Anyone have any experience with these?

Don't buy a 20 year old BMW if you don't know shit about cars. Buy an accord or civic, something that won't blow up every 10k miles.

I may have to travel to Japan for work at some point in the next two months.
I was wondering if there are any must-see car events occuring that you lot are aware of?

Presumably I will be in Hitachi City for most of the time, but I plan to do a bit of travelling where possible. I might take a few days' holiday out there and make the most of the free flights and accomodation, so suggestions for events anywhere in Japan would be most appreciated.

Thanks~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Look up Daikoku Futo in Tokyo. That's the most popular car meet you'll hear about. There's also many car meets throughout the country but I don't know many myself. You'll have to look it up for your area. Mountanous areas that have touges usually get meets with Hachi Rokus and the such sometimes.

Also, learn some Japanese. It'll help a lot. I went once last year and it was a great country, lots of cool stuff and cars. Shops also have cheap stuff (compared to here) if you need anything JDM.

Make the most out of your trip anon.

It depends what you what it for. A relatively quick and comfortable car to get from A - B in? It'll be fine. Even in that blue, it's still a very feminine car. If you tell people you own a 2005 Mini Cooper, people will assume you're either a woman or a homosexual.

Hey guys

Gf has a 2005 Mini Cooper S and it's making squealing noises at mid RPM when it's cold.

Noise goes away when it's not under heavy acceleration.

Is it a bad belt or pulley?

Not the best idea to rev an engine overly high when cold. Unless you mean cold outside temperature and the engine is is at operating temperature when it happens

Over 3050lb bone dry, that's over 70lb heavier than a 675LT with oil, water and fuel, it also gets less than 70% of the mpg of the 675 in city and barely 80% of it on highway while being 3% down on power.
