Sorry, I'm pretty new to cars in general, but I came across this topic early on in my enthusiasm and I never really asked until now.

Why do people make a big deal about air cooled Porsches vs water cooled Porsches?

I understand classic cars become more desirable as they get older and that Porsche as a brand has more traditionalists in their fanbase than most other marques, but what are the mechanical/aesthetic reasons why the air cooled Porsches are considered more desirable?

>>
It's a glorified VW, so less shit to go wrong, and you don't need a Ph.D and a bunch of fancy tools to work on them. Just basic mechanical knowledge.

And yes, I'll have one before I die.
>>
>>16585736
Why bump when you got your answer.

They are older and were essentially an evolution of the original 911 both in design language and engineering.

Dumbasses who buy cars as investment pieces are driving the air cooled prices up, while the smart guys buy water cooled turbos and gt3's to actually enjoy.

911 engines are not rocket science, whether air cooled or water cooled (excepting mechanical fuel injection). The only real barrier to working on them is access and the p-tax for lazy bums who can't use google.
>>
1. Air cooled engines sound better

2. The last aircooled Porsche was the last "good" looking Porsche (not fried egg shaped headlights, lacked "modern" bloated design)

3. They are lighter (less parts)

4. They are simpler (less complexity for the cooling system)

5. Boomers don't like change

I'll start. How do you put a car on jackstands if your jack is on the jack point? I want to take my resonator off and I don't want to have my car on just my sketchy oem jack.
252 posts and 25 images submitted.
>>
If I have to get my car up high to get under it, I'll put one jack on each side, and then a jack stand next to the jack point, but not being used. I'll leave the car on the jacks, but if they start to fail, the jack stands will catch it and at least give me enough time to get out and jack it back up.

>Senior engineers with Mazda and several survivors of the nuclear attack on Hiroshima started communicating with Felix Wankel a Nazi during the second world war
>One goal, develop a rotary engine and win
>His advice and vision set Mazda of into the right direction
>In his dieing years 1988, Felix writes a letter his friends telling him he won't make it, but believes they are on the right path
>Fast forward a couple years and the FIA is informed about the ongoing project of an improved rotary engine that will keep Felix's (a Nazi) legacy alive
>Major Jewish shareholders start lobbying to ban the engine using Peugeot as their front
>they fail to impose the ban in time
>1991, the 24 hours of Le Man race starts
>Mazda wins with the 787B
>The engine envisioned by Felix and the will power of the Japanese engineers of Mazda made the old Glory alive again

https://youtube.com/watch?v=uhWK_DC844M

In 1992 the rotary engine was banned by the FIA from participating due to safety concerns and failing to comply with new rules surrounding cilinder sizes.

Nope.
They wanted everyone to use F1 motors because they were trying to turn Lemans into a Formula series.
>>
>>16593218

Threats of sanctions and pulling out investments in Mazda the research and development came to an abrupt halt.

The engine is several years behind now in terms of r&d.

Ask yourself, if it was fuel inefficient, how did it win the 24 hours race?

Does /o/ have experience with car wraps, specifically roofs? Does it withstand birdshit?
I get a lot of bird shit on my car during the summer and it's somehow always on the roof, never on the hood or trunk. On my last car a big fat birdshit ate a huge hole into the paint while I was on vacation once.

>>
>>16592768
Well, i prefer damage on my warp instead of on my paint, senpai
>>
>>16592824
The paint doesn't suffer unless the shit sits for a while and bakes in the sun. How long do I get before the wrap is damaged? I've only had my car since fall, so the roof is still mint, but I'd like to warp it before springs hits and all the birds come back. But I'll save the money if birdshit can ruin the warp over a single weekend.
>>
>>16592844

Nah the wrap will protect it for ages man.

I started wrapping all my off road rides to save me repainting every year due to stone chips and general sand blasting, shit holds up amazingly well and the paint underneath is always in amazing shape.

What are all you guys using in your shitb/o/xes? I've been using the newish castrol edge high mileage, so far it's been great. Still clean after about 2500 miles.

My only problem with it is that nobody seems to carry it in 10w40, and it doesn't seem to exist in a 5 quart jug. $60 on amazon for 6 quarts, and the lowest I've seen it locally is $9.50/qt at advance auto parts. Anyone know anywhere that has it cheaper?

Yeah pretty much

That's the cycle. First owner buys it for 45k. Drives it and maintains it well until the warranty comes close to running out. Trades it in. Second owner picks it up, teats it well but maybe lets the oil changes go a little longer, fixes things when he gets around to it. Several years later, trades it in. Third owner picks it up but it's at the top of his budget. Skips oil changes, blows off the service interval as it's too expensive, defaults on the loan, it goes to auction, shit corner lot dealer buys it. Fourth owner picks up what he thinks is a smoking deal, it's 20k past service, oil is black, one headlight burnt out. It's the same with any car.
