I have a question about engine cruising RPM vs engine wear. The new car I am buying is a 5 speed manual, and at highway speeds it runs at about 4000 RPM. I am used to my older 6 speed that cruises at half this RPM on the highway, so 4000 seems high. I do a fair bit of highway driving so I am wondering, will an engine that cruises at 4000 RPM on the highway face more engine wear than one that cruises at 2000? Or am I being irrational and worrying for nothing? The engine uses 0W20 oil if that matters.

No but more fuel.
>>
In theory anything under the red should be fine for the engine, but I'd imagine in practice faster rotation means higher wear.

Doesn't matter even a little bit. Economy cars of '80s-'00s, and to a lesser extent today, frequently turned 4,000rpm going down the highway. They did this by design, for twenty years and hundreds of thousands of miles, without complaint.

I would imagine you guys will slam me with Subaru suggestions, but I feel like they are too close to the ground and will get stuck. Was thinking the Suzuki SX4. Shorter wheelbase let's it get away with less ground clearance.

Want a general purpose, do-all / jack of all trades vehicle.

Don't need the best mpg, or space, or drive feelz or speed. Just don't want compromise if I want to go on a road trip and venture out on some forest trails, or go out in the desert and camp under the stars.

I'd suggest a 4runner/pathfinder/older land cruiser, or a 4x4 pickup with a long bed and a cap depending on your budget.

Is it just me or are exhaust systems a complete meme? It's common knowledge that to maximize power you need to maximize airflow so ideally you want to be straight piped with right sized headers - but what fucking difference could there possibly be between the brands besides how quiet they can be while retaining a high air flow?

It's a hollow piece of metal that lets air flow through it.

There can't possibly be any differences.

It's the sound that people go for

I'm pretty sure on a lot of cars you lose out on a bit of power with a ricer exhaust
>>
you are clearly ignorant on exhausts

1. maximum airflow isnt always the best otherwise people would just run open header
2. different muffler/resonator design pipe thickness material and placement make different sounds
3. straight pipe is fucking awful
>>
>>16656575
>There can't possibly be any differences
There are slightly less than 1 million different muffler designs

Yup, got my first speeding ticket too. 48 euros for doing 6 km/h over in some bullshit city at 0:30 am. Nothing really takes the joy out of having a car more than this (aside from slamming into a fucking tree), doesn't it /o/?

Wasn't myself to be honest. Promised to bring someone and his friends to a remote airport so they could have the cheapest vacation possible. Later found out that parking was 45 euros/week there. Fucker strictly only wanted to pay for gas and nothing else. I got home at 5 am for fuck's sake. So yeah, I broke the speed limit.

So I found this beetle that looks in relatively good shape, and the seller is offering $650. Only thing--that I can tell--is that there is no engine.

I've been looking for my first car recently (saved up $16000), but nothing in my area shows up that's reasonable, or that isn't shady.

I researched how much engines are for this thing, but from the looks of it, they're way more than I think it's worth for a good conditioned beetle (1600cc twin-carb is $3000+).

Of course I asked for specs, and more pictures, but even then, it seems too good to be true.

Should I just abandon ship, and wait for something else?

And if so, do you have any recommendations for first time car owners?

Pic is the beetle. The guy is seller is willing to drop it off.

>>16652789

Also, according to the seller, it has a new headliner, an $80 new carpet kit that hasn't been installed I guess, and "many extra parts." I asked him/her what that means, and so now I'm just waiting for the response back.
>>
>>16652789

tl;dr wan to buy first car, vw beetle on Craigslist is $650 without engine. Should I bite, yes or no?
>>
>>16652789

Great idea for a project.

Did you work on a vintage car before?
Do you have the tools and space to work on it?
Does anyone you know have some sort of idea of how cars work?

Aquiring a running VW engine and putting in the back of a Beetle is not a big task and is not going to cost 3000$.

But I'm sure there is a lot more work to be done before the car actually drives well (will probably require new tyres, brakes, lots of smaller fixes) and all that will add up, and also take a lot of work and time.
Spare parts for these cars are easily available for reasonable prices, there is lots of know how, plus the Beetle is a very easy car to work on

do this:
>buy cheap daily driver like an older civic or corolla for 3-5k
>buy beetle, engine and take your time to get it to run and drive properly
>once it's drivable you can decide wether you can deal with a 73 Beetle as a daily driver (chances are it's too noisy, slow and uncomfortable for you)or not

Also get the fuck away from 4chan for advice on this, join a forum for aircooled VWs

Snowing like a mofo out there today, was going to attempt going into work (city is shut down but my job remained open). I have 4x4 1500, never an issue before cutting through snow but just as I went to back out of driveway, plow buries me in, can't move forward, can't go back.

Had my 4x4 engaged and rear wheels spinning and hit the brake hard - loud bang - I don't know if they were before or not, but my front wheels will not turn with the rear wheels.

Did I fuck it up? These are auto hubs with manual floor shifter. I've heard this BANG before when I was messing around with the truck when I first bought it but never an issue after.

How do you expect one to learn how to use 4x4 if they've never used it before? Trial and error asshat.

Anyway OP, I'd check the front hubs, they may not have fully engaged or they're shot now. Look for red fluid too underneath and check for any signs of metal bits on the ground.

Best thing tho, take it to a mechanic and get them to overlook it all.
