http://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/06/hopes-of-trump-bump-for-u-s-economy-shrink-as-growth-forecasts-fade.html
>The promise of faster economic growth has become a study in the triumph of hope over experience.
>While the June jobs report, coming on Friday, is expected to show that hiring continued at a healthy pace last month, other recent indicators in areas like consumer spending, construction and auto sales have been decidedly less robust.
>As a result, Wall Street forecasters have been busy lowering their growth estimates for the second quarter, which ended last Friday, much as they were forced to do over the first three months of the year. Economic expansion for the full year now appears unlikely to be much greater than 2 percent — about the average for the current recovery, which celebrates its eighth year this month.
>While hardly terrible, it is not the burst of growth — a "Trump bump" — that many expected to result from an upturn in consumer and business sentiment after President Trump's election.
>Mr. Trump himself declared upon taking office that his policies would produce 4 percent annual growth, and just this week said on Twitter to affirm that "things are starting to kick in now."
>But the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta's widely followed GDP Now expects the second-quarter growth figure to come in at 3 percent, more than a full percentage point below where it was in May. The New York Fed's Nowcast is even more bearish, with an estimate of 1.9 percent for the quarter just ended and 1.6 percent for the current quarter.
>"We never seem to have the rebound that people anticipate," said Stephanie Pomboy, an independent economist in New York who has been skeptical about initially rosy forecasts favored by many of her colleagues in recent quarters.
>The fading expectations for the current quarter are only the latest example of how faster economic growth seems perpetually out of reach.
>Far from living up to expectations of a lift after Mr. Trump's election, the growth rate in the first quarter turned out to be an anemic 1.4 percent. Some of the weakness stemmed from seasonal factors and calendar quirks that have repeatedly produced soft annual starts during the current recovery.
>The indicators that Mr. Trump highlighted in recent messages on Twitter are indeed pointing in the right direction — strong job creation, a record high for the Dow Jones industrial average and low gasoline prices. But so far, the economy's basic trajectory remains the same as it did under President Barack Obama.
>The diminishing expectations are reflected in the dollar's recent slump. That is not necessarily a bad thing — a weaker dollar makes exports more competitive in foreign markets. It is, however, a sign of the world's take on the American economy, as well as an indication of improving prospects abroad, especially in Europe.
>Experts say that without a meaningful change in government policies — greater infrastructure investment, an overhaul of the corporate tax code, a new commitment to improve the skills of American workers — there is no reason to expect the domestic outlook to change.
>And with deep party divisions in Washington — and the inability of Republicans so far to capitalize on control of Congress and the White House — the odds of passing a major infrastructure bill or sweeping tax legislation are growing longer by the day.
>"I don't see any reason we will veer from a 2 percent growth rate," said Scott Anderson, chief economist at Bank of the West in San Francisco. "The safe bet is to expect more of the same. Unless we do things to boost productivity, this is the economy we are going to see."

LITTLE FALLS — A woman has been arrested after State Police in Herkimer responded to what they called a suspicious residential fire Sunday on Burt Road in Little Falls.
Iryna Recchia, 32, of Little Falls, was charged with felony second-degree arson, felony menacing a police officer and felony first-degree reckless endangerment, troopers said.
When state police arrived on the scene of the fire, they saw a woman standing in the doorway of the residence holding two knives in her hand and threatening the officers, police said.
The woman, which police said is Recchia, refused to comply and went back into the burning residence.
As firefighters were attempting to distinguish the fire, troopers continued to try to get Recchia to drop the knives but she refused to comply, state police said
Troopers were then forced to use a Taser on Recchia who was then taken into custody without further incident, police said.
A 46 year-old male resident was transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica for serious burns, police said. Four New York State Troopers were treated at Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare in Utica for smoke inhalation and released, police said.

>Amnesty International says that Turkish authorities have detained its country director for Turkey, Idil Eser, amid a sweeping crackdown on dissent.
>The U.K.-based rights group says Eser was taken into custody Wednesday morning with seven other human rights workers and two foreign trainers.
>It happened as they took part in a "routine training event" in a hotel on an island near the capital Istanbul, Amnesty adds.
>On Thursday, the rights groups said that it has learned the detainees are being investigated for alleged membership in an armed terrorist organization.
>"The absurdity of these accusations against Idil Eser and the nine others cannot disguise the very grave nature of this attack on some of the most prominent civil society organizations in Turkey," Amnesty's Secretary General Salil Shetty said in a statement.
>"Their spurious detention while attending a routine workshop was bad enough: that they are now being investigated for membership of an armed terrorist organization beggars belief," he adds.
>NPR's Peter Kenyon in Istanbul reports that "there was no explanation for the detentions, and no immediate comment from police."
>Amnesty said the detainees were denied access to lawyers for at least 28 hours, which its said runs counter to Turkish law.
>Last month, Turkish authorities detained Amnesty's Turkey country chair Taner Kiliç, accusing him of ties to U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who they blame for the failed coup attempt last July. Kiliç "remains in jail pending trial," Reuters reports.
>Amnesty says it is the first time in its history that a country has detained its chair and director at the same time.
>Tens of thousands have been swept up in the purge since the coup attempt. "Turkey has jailed more than 50,000 people pending trial and suspended or dismissed some 150,000, including soldiers, police, teachers and public servants, over alleged links with terrorist groups," the wire service reports.
>The Turkish government defends the measures as necessary for its security; human rights advocates say authorities are using security as a justification to clamp down on all forms of dissent.
>As The Two-Way has reported, "a referendum in April, which passed by a narrow margin, radically expanded the powers of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan."
>"If anyone was still in doubt of the endgame of Turkey's post-coup crackdown, they should not be now," Shetty said. "There is to be no civil society, no criticism and no accountability in Erdoğan's Turkey."

>OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Hobby Lobby Stores has agreed to pay a $3 million federal fine and forfeit thousands of ancient Iraqi religious artifacts smuggled from the Middle East that the government alleges were intentionally mislabeled for import, federal prosecutors said.
>The Oklahoma City-based craft store chain's devout Christian owners have long shown an interest in the biblical Middle East and started to collect artifacts from the region in 2009, according to a civil complaint filed in New York on Wednesday. Hobby Lobby President Steve Green is the owner of one of the largest collections of religious artifacts in the world and is building a Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., due to open in the fall.
>Green said in a statement that the company cooperated with the government and "should have exercised more oversight and carefully questioned how the acquisitions were handled."
>Hobby Lobby executed an agreement to purchase over 5,500 artifacts in December 2010 for $1.6 million, the complaint says. Prosecutors said acquisition of the artifacts "was fraught with red flags" and that packages bore shipping labels that described their contents as "ceramic tiles."
>Importing Iraqi cultural property into the United States has been restricted since 1990 and banned outright since 2004, according to the complaint. Under Iraqi law, all antiquities found in Iraq are considered property of the state and private people cannot generally possess them without authorization of the Iraqi government, the complaint says.
>A dealer based in the United Arab Emirates shipped packages containing the artifacts to three different corporate addresses in Oklahoma City. Five shipments that were intercepted by U.S. customs officials bore shipping labels that falsely declared that the artifacts' country of origin was Turkey.
>In September 2011, a package containing about 1,000 clay bullae, an ancient form of inscribed identification, was received by Hobby Lobby from an Israeli dealer and accompanied by a false declaration stating that its country of origin was Israel.
>Hobby Lobby consented to the fine and forfeiture of thousands of tablets and bricks written in cuneiform, one of the earliest systems of writing, as well as other artifacts that prosecutors say were shipped without proper documentation, the complaint says.
>Prosecutors said Hobby Lobby has agreed to adopt internal policies for importing cultural property and training its personnel.
>"Our passion for the Bible continues, and we will do all that we can to support the efforts to conserve items that will help illuminate and enhance our understanding of this Great Book," Green said.
>It's not the first time that religious beliefs have put Hobby Lobby in the headlines.
>The chain challenged President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act, saying it didn't want to provide certain forms of birth control for its employees, citing religious objections. In June 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Hobby Lobby's favor, saying the company's rights had been violated under the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. ― A few hundred armed militia group members, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Ku Klux Klaners, supporters of President Donald Trump, and other self-described patriots descended upon the Gettysburg battlefield Saturday to defend the site’s Confederate symbols from phantom activists with the violent far-left group Antifa.
Some carried semi-automatic rifles ― permitted in Pennsylvania ― as they peered out across the battlefield with binoculars, on the lookout for the black-clad, face-masked anti-fascists, anarchists and socialists they said they had heard were traveling to the national park to dishonor Confederate graves, monuments and flags.
Although many came expecting violence ― even after Antifa made it clear its adherents never planned to show up ― the only bloodshed came when a lone militia group member accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Police raid drug-fuelled gay orgy at cardinal's apartment
Police entered an apartment at the former palace of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (or Holy Office) last month not far from the Vatican City.
The occupant of the apartment is alleged to be a priest who serves as a secretary to cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio, the head of the Pontifical Council for Legislative texts and a personal adviser to the Pope.
The allegations of the orgy were first published by newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano.
According to the paper, neighbours became suspicious before complaining about irregular behaviour of those coming and going at the apartment.
When police showed up at the apartment, they reportedly found drugs and a group of men engaged in sexual activity.
The priest was then arrested and taken for questioning.
Il Fatto Quotidiano suggested that Pope Francis has been infuriated by the news and may force Coccopalmerio into retirement.
The incident is symptomatic of a difficult period for the Pope. Four years into his papacy the Catholic Church appears racked by conflict and scandal.

Fake news is fake.

NZ Herald is a reputable newspaper in daily print that is generally considered centrist or centre-right in Commonwealth politics, reprinting editorial stuff from sometimes the Telegraph and occasionally even the Daily Mail.
Il Fatto Quotidiano was founded in 2009 in opposition to, and declaring independence from, the government of Berlusconi. It has not had any severe credibility issues according to what I can get from its Italian Wikipedia page.
So no, not "Fake News". (That label does not bear on whether or not the story itself is true -- the police report may have been fabricated, for example, or the journalist him/herself may have gone rogue on this story. But if either were the case, once discovered it would be given a thorough story covering the correction/corruption in a further issue of each paper, and obviously be a way bigger story too.)
In a horrifying trend recently reported by Indian media, poor villagers near the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve are allegedly sending their elderly relatives into the jungle as tiger prey, so they can then claim compensation from the government.
The disturbing tactic was discovered by officials at the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) in Uttar Pradesh, who, upon inspecting several mauling sites near the tiger reserve, noticed evidence of foul play. In the most recent case, reported on July 1st, the mauled body of a 55-year-old woman was found in a field near her village, but bits of her clothes were found one kilometer away, in the tiger reserve, and tractor tracks leading into and from the jungle showed that the body had been relocated.
Tigers in the Pilibhit Reserve are allowed to run free, so if people venture into their territory, they are not eligible for compensation from the Indian government. If they are attacked outside the borders of the reserve, however, their families are eligible to receive important sums of money from the state. Following an unusually high number of reported tiger attacks on elderly people from villages near the reserve – seven deaths since February – wildlife officials began to suspect that something was off.
After gathering enough evidence, villagers were accused of deliberately sending elderly members of their communities into the jungle to be killed by the wild animals, so they could then claim compensation from the government. Instead of denying the claims, locals only added that the victims volunteered to forfeit their lives so their families could have a better life.
http://www.odditycentral.com/news/indian-villages-allegedly-send-the-elderly-into-forests-as-tiger-prey-to-receive-government-compensation.html
“They think that since they can’t get resources from the forest, this is the only way their families can escape poverty,” 60-year-old Jarnail Singh, a farmer, told The Times of India.
Kalim Athar, the WCCB official who arrived at the shocking conclusion after investigating the shocking attacks, has already submitted a report, and told reporters that the matter has been referred to the National Tiger Conservation Authority for further action.
If ISIS is retreating in Mosul, it is rapidly advancing in Manchester. The Caliphate is winning its war in Europe. Six months ago in Britain, the rise of Jeremy Corbyn, the ultra-pacifist Labour party leader who blamed the "war on terror" for the recent attacks in Manchester and London, would have been unthinkable.
>ISIS's main legacy, however, is devastation -- both cultural and human. ISIS has been successful in making a blank slate, a sort of Islamic "year zero," in which, after an apocalypse, history will start again -- supposedly virgin and pure. The Caliphate will leave behind a Middle East more and more Islamic, not only in the landscape, but also in demography. ISIS swept away entire non-Muslim communities that will never return. Many Christian and Yazidi towns within its orbit will remain permanently empty due to the slaughter, the exile and the disappearance of survivors. The Islamic State has been able to destroy the ancient Christian community of Mosul.

Here's a news flash; ISIS arn't very good at actual fighting. And the fightback against them is mounting every day. How CNN found the Reddit user behind the Trump wrestling GIF
(CNN)The Reddit user who initially claimed credit for President Donald Trump's tweet that showed Trump tackling CNN issued an apology Tuesday for the video and other offensive content he posted -- one day after CNN identified the man behind the account and attempted to make contact with him.
Reddit user "HanA**holeSolo" first shared the GIF last Wednesday of Trump pummeling a wrestler with CNN's logo imposed on his face. CNN could find no earlier instance of the GIF. The GIF was later edited into a video with sound and tweeted by the President on Sunday.
On Reddit, "HanA**holeSolo" took credit for inspiring the tweet. Soon after, "HanA**holeSolo's" other posts on Reddit, some of which included racist and anti-Semitic imagery, quickly circulated on social media.
Now the user is apologizing, writing in a lengthy post on Reddit that he does not advocate violence against the press and expressing remorse there and in an interview with CNN for other posts he made that were racist and anti-Semitic.

It turns out Trump, a president loathed by Democrats, is a far greater spur to liberal activism than the revered Barack Obama, a former community organizer who hoped to inspire a wave of officeholders and Democratic idealists. Instead, he presided over the hollowing-out of his party.
“In November last year, being a politician was the last thing I would have ever, ever, ever intended to do,” said Kellen Squire, a 32-year-old emergency room nurse in central Virginia, who, helped by Litman’s group, is waging an uphill fight for a seat in the state House of Delegates. “But I saw whatever was going to come down the pike was going to be so jacked up, I wasn’t going to just take it. I had to stand up, yell, scream and holler.”
A group calling itself the Resistance Media Collective has assembled 200 animators, graphic designers, videographers and other volunteers to live-stream anti-Trump protests and produce materials such as a cartoon brochure titled “A Preparedness Guide for Undocumented Families.”
Its tips, in English and Spanish, include finding a U.S. citizen to act as a child’s legal guardian and advice on navigating the court system. “Our goal, very very simply, is to amplify the resistance,” said Kathryn Jones, 48, a former actress in New York City and one of the group’s leaders.
“It’s not a Bernie thing or a Hillary thing or an Obama thing,” said Alex Wall, a Democratic communications strategist and one of dozens of volunteers working together to help the anti-Trump opposition hone its message and broaden its reach on Facebook, Twitter and other social media. “It’s about speaking with one voice.”
More important is grooming a stable of newcomers who can step up years from now to run for governor or U.S. Senate.
Or the ultimate post-Trump fantasy: “A 2032 presidential candidate who started with us.”
