Student activists at Brown University are complaining of emotional stress and poor grades after months of protesting, and blame the school for insisting that they complete their coursework.

“There are people breaking down, dropping out of classes, and failing classes because of the activism work they are taking on,” an undergraduate student going by the pseudonym “David” told The Brown Daily Herald Thursday. “My grades dropped dramatically. My health completely changed. I lost weight. I’m on antidepressants and anti-anxiety pills right now. Counselors called me. I had deans calling me to make sure I was okay.”

Other students reported similar problems, describing maladies ranging from emotional distraction to panic attacks that they say caused them to skip assignments, miss class, and generally lose focus on keeping their grades up.

David and other students began demonstrating on campus in October to protest two opinion columns published in the Daily Herald that some students deemed racist because they defended the celebration of Columbus Day. Black and Asian student groups reacted by demanding that the paper not only retract and apologize for the op-eds, but also develop a plan for increasing the diversity of its staff, subject to approval by the activists.

Following an almost-immediate capitulation by the newspaper’s editorial board, and incensed by University President Christina Paxson’s attempt to stake out a middle ground on the matter, the protesters proceeded to direct their unspent energies on the university as a whole, issuing an ultimatum in November calling for affirmative action hiring policies, mandatory diversity training, and apologies for Brown’s historical ties to the slave trade.

It's so windy here you might as well call us Windianapolis!
A huge branch, a bundle of medium ones, and a pile of small ones had all blown off the tree in my yard onto my driveway, my trash and recycling bins all fell over, and the wooden plank that had been in front of my crawlspace fell off, so it'd been noisy all night and I probably have a raccoon down there, but I'm happy! My perfect weather! I was feeling so fine that I even picked up my neighbor's branches and bins!
How's the weather?

Hey /news/, I don't usually browse this board, but I couldn't find anywhere else more appropriate to ask this.

Essentially, the article is about this woman I used to be friends with, who viscously killed her dog, by hitting it in the head with a hammer twice, and stabbing it twenty times. Whether or not she was drugged up or not is unclear, although I am aware that she has a history of cocaine abuse. Furthermore, the article indicates that she may have not been mentally stable at the time of the attack, which I could easily believe.

Nevertheless, considering that a man was sentenced to three months in prison for frequently attacking his dog with a belt, according to UK law, how long do you think she will be sentenced for? Furthermore, what does the article convey to you regarding her psychological structure?

MPs have won access to documents covering controversial and secretive trade talks between Brussels and Washington, but can only take a pencil and paper into the room where the files can be viewed.

A U.S. soldier wounded in an explosion will be the first person in the United States to receive a penis transplant, doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital said, which could open the way for about 60 other servicemen with genital injuries to have this surgery.

Surgeons hope a donated organ from a recently deceased man will provide full function including urination, sensation and sex. The surgery requires joining nerves and blood vessels under a microscope.

Doctors and advocates who work with wounded soldiers note that the loss of the penis is one of the most emotionally traumatic injuries because it affects a sense of identity and manhood, especially for men hoping to become fathers.

Preventing offense is more important than promoting safety.

If the purpose of a campus crime alert is to warn students about a dangerous person or situation, and the purpose of a trigger warning is to deter students from consuming information that might bother them—well, aren’t the two things in conflict?

And yet, the University of Iowa saw fit to add a trigger warning to a campus-wide email about a sexual deviant on the loose. Do administrators want to protect students’ bodies or their feelings?

According to The Daily Iowan, a man was spotted trying to videotape a female student while she took a shower in a dormitory bathroom. A police officer fought the man, but he escaped. The university’s public safety department then sent out an alert prefaced by the following disclaimer, according to The College Fix:

Trigger Warning: This warning addresses a report of sexual misconduct. Resources are available on and off campus to provide assistance. Contact RVAP for 24/7 support at (319) 335-6000 or at http://rvap.uiowa.edu/.

What followed was a description of the incident and instructions to students to contact the authorities if they had any information about the perpetrator. But if officials actually wanted students—victims of sexual misconduct, in particular—to be aware of the potential threat, they shouldn’t have warned them not to read it. As The Tab’s Matt McDonald wrote:

If there was a miscreant with an iPhone skulking around my campus trying to perve on unsuspecting freshmen, I’d want to know about it. I’d want to know my campus police force are working to keep me physically safe – not warning me off important information for fear of offending me.
