MANILA - At least 18 soldiers and five Islamist militants were killed in a fierce 10-hour firefight between government forces and the Abu Sayyaf group in Basilan province, 1,400km south of the capital Manila, on Saturday (April 9).

Some 50 soldiers were wounded, according to Major Filemon Tan, spokesman of the military’s Western Mindanao Command.

“Initially, I confirm that there was an encounter in barangay (village) Baguindan, Tipo Tipo (town), Basilan, with results on the government side: 18 KIA (killed in action), 53 (wounded in action),” he said.

He said among the militants killed were Moroccan Mohammad Khatfab and Ubaida Hapilon, reportedly a son of a senior Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that an entire platoon “was wiped out”, and that four of the soldiers killed were beheaded.

Lieutenant-Colonel Benedicto Manquiquis said the clashes began at 7.55am on Saturday, when the Army’s 4th Special Forces Battalion and 44th Infantry Battalion came across over 100 Abu Sayyaf fighters.

The soldiers had been hunting the Abu Sayyaf across across Basilan and in nearby Joso islands for two weeks, hoping to free at least 18 foreigners being held by the group.

Among those held were Canadians Robert Hall, 50, and John Ridsdel, 68, and Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad, 56, whom the Abu Sayyaf had threatened to behead if their demands for ransom were not met by Friday (April 8).

>The Federal Communications Commission will fine a mobile provider $51.1 million for creating tens of thousands of fake Lifeline accounts. The Lifeline program, or “Obama phone” as some call it, subsidizes mobile service for low-income Americans.

>The FCC announced its $51.1 million on Total Call Mobile on Thursday. It would be the largest ever levied against a Lifeline provider, with the FCC saying that it reflects the “seriousness, duration, and scope of TCM’s multiple apparent violations.”

>The commission accused the company of fraudulently enrolling tens of thousands of ineligible and duplicate customers in the Lifeline program, which is meant to help poorer Americans get wireless access. The program is part of the Universal Service Fund, which is paid for by US residents through phone bill surcharges.

>The FCC pegged the amount of ill-gotten gains the company has raked in since 2014 at $9.7 million. During the fourth quarter of that year, 99.8 percent of Total Call’s enrollments in the nationwide program involved overriding a system designed to catch duplicates.

>“Any waste, fraud, or abuse in the Lifeline program diverts scarce funds from the consumers they are meant to serve and undermines the public’s trust in the program and its stewardship,” Travis LeBlanc, head of the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau, said in a Thursday statement.

>Last month, the FCC approved a program to create an independent entity that would verify Lifeline subscriber eligibility in order to reduce fraud.

Steam users who want to share a link to The Pirate Bay from the built-in chat client will be disappointed, as mentions of the popular torrent site are being censored. Links to various torrent and file-sharing sites are actively stripped from discussions, presumably because Valve doesn't appreciate some of the content that's shared through the site.

steamWith millions of active users Steam is not just a game distribution platform, but also a social network and a communication tool.

Many people use Steam’s instant messaging tool for chats with friends. About games of course, but also about lots of other stuff.

Interestingly, it appears that Steam doesn’t want its users to mention certain topics, piracy included. When one user tried to post a link to the notorious torrent site The Pirate Bay this week, Steam actively censored the message.

>A Baltimore school police officer who was caught on a viral video slapping and kicking a teenager has avoided felony child abuse charges. The officer and his partner, who observed the abuse, now face lesser charges of assault and misconduct in office.

>The Baltimore state’s attorney’s office dropped the second-degree child abuse charges against officer Anthony C. Spence, because they were not found to be “appropriate.”

>“After obtaining all the facts and analyzing them based on Maryland case law, Pope v. State, as well as the applicable criminal statute, we have determined the defendants in these cases did not have temporary care or custody of the victim, therefore the child abuse charges are not appropriate,” spokeswoman Rochelle Ritchie said in a statement.

>Spence, 44, has been under investigation since early March, when a video posted on Facebook showed him slapping a 16-year-old across the face three times before kicking him outside the REACH Partnership School in Clifton Park.

>Spence’s partner, Saverna Bias, 53, was seen standing nearby, reportedly encouraging Spence to “smack him because he has too much mouth.”

>Warren Brown, Spence’s lawyer, initially said that his client had been responding to a report of an intruder on the school grounds. However, it was later confirmed that the teenager was a student there. Brown then claimed that the student had spat on Spence before the officer slapped and kicked him.

>Bias’ attorney, Steven Levin, said on Thursday that the video showed his client hadn’t done anything to the teenager.

>“There is no basis for these charges,” Levin said.

Good work, officers.

>On March 10, both Spence and Bias were charged with second-degree assault and misconduct in office and put on paid administrative leave.
>Brown said that he and his client “fully expect” to convince a jury that Spence and Bias’ behavior was “more than appropriate,” and that the case was “brought on by the vile act of this alleged victim,” who he suggested was an example of an “antisocial, lead-poisoned, irrational, angry, mired in poverty and despair” child.
>“It’s not ‘Leave It to Beaver.’ You’re dealing with a tough group of people,” he said, according to the Baltimore Sun.
>Geisser is expecting Spence to be convicted for the “egregious acts” caught in the video. Spence’s arraignment is scheduled for May 6.

Good luck, officers.

I wonder what these two are up to.

The Washington Post has repeatedly pointed out part of the reason the dem black vote is going to Hillary is because they want someone to follow through with what he has done.

Also, with this bullshit Clinton opens himself (and his wife) up to shit that they did in the 90s and how those decisions created the present. I mean seriously, does he think Trump is not going to rake Hillary over the coals for NAFTA?

What the fuck is his end game here? Who is he trying to appeal to?

Economy in much better shape than when Obama came in. Number of unemployed dramatically down. War in the Middle East... really, wasn't Hilary Secretary of State and responsible for much of our foreign policy agenda? Does he really want to paint the situation as being look what Obama and Hillary did was terrible? I mean its not like Hillary was some average congress person throughout Obama's terms, she had a very powerful position and a key position when it comes to foreign affairs.

She was a member of the cabinet--the president's cabinet. i.e. the people subordinate to, and directly working with, the president.

Regardless of whether he agreed with her actions, he is responsible as an administrator for the administration. That's part of being in a position of power; you are culpable for the people who work for you, especially *directly* for you.

If he was unaware of what she was doing, he is incompetent. If he was aware, he is complicit. Either way it is, as an administrator, his responsibility.
He is at least as guilty as she is.

Supervisors at Veterans Affairs medical facilities told employees to falsify wait times in at least seven states, an investigation indicates.

Staff at 40 VA facilities in 19 states as well as Puerto Rico routinely "zeroed out" wait times for veterans, though wait times were often longer, a USA Today analysis found. This was allegedly done to create the impression the facilities were meeting their wait-time goals.

For some facilities, the policy had been carried out up to a decade.

The revelation comes less than two years after Phoenix VA Medical Center and others were found to have engaged in similar policies while veterans died waiting for care.

A facility in Vermont was found by investigators to have rampant improprieties, yet the director of the facility is now the director of the Phoenix VA Medical Center where the scandal was first uncovered.

Despite scrutiny from investigators, some facilities still allowed the manipulation of records to happen as the demand from Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans began to pile up.

The VA said it has disciplined 29 people, and three have left the agency. It has also retrained schedulers, updated its software, and began a pilot program that allows veterans to schedule their own appointments.

However, the problem continues, according to employees.

"Until the VA decides it truly wants to change its corrupt and poor culture, those who work on the front lines and possess the true knowledge relating to the VA's continued data manipulation will remain quiet and in hiding because of fear of workplace harassment and retaliation," said Shea Wilkes, a social worker at the VA Medical Center in Shreveport, La., and co-director of a group of more than 40 whistle-blowers.

Surgeons at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in the capital city of Costa Rica removed a yuca (cassava root or manioc) measuring 45 cm of length (about 18 inches) from the anal cavity of a 55-year old man, who is currently in stable condition.

According to a report filed by Manuel Estrada of daily tabloid Diario Extra, the patient was rushed to the emergency room after one of the two latex condoms wrapped around the Manihot esculenta, which had an estimated girth of eight centimeters (more than three inches), ripped inside him.

As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star, yuca and other tubers can grow to significant sizes with certain cultivation techniques.

The surgery lasted more than an hour, and it included reconstructive procedures to alleviate the man’s anus and part of his intestines, which became compromised after the tuber was exposed inside the patient. Thankfully, the rectum was not perforated, a situation that may have resulted in a dangerous secondary peritoneal inflammation and infection.

Photographs of the surgery were posted by Diario Extra on its digital edition. One of the photographs shows that the yuca had been carved into a phallic shape, thus making the manioc a sort of an organic sex toy or vegetable dildo.

Mauro Fernandez, a renowned sexologist in Costa Rica, was interviewed by Diario Extra with regard to this incident. Mr. Fernandez explained that sex with vegetables is a fetish (a paraphilia) that is not so uncommon. Food play is a sitophilia whereby individuals can be aroused by situations that involve edible matter.

Emergency rooms around the world have admitted patients whose sitophilia sessions compromised their health due to lack of precautions or clouded judgments.

"Asad Shah disrespected the messenger of Islam the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. Mr Shah claimed to be a Prophet.

"When 1400 years ago the Prophet of Islam Muhammad peace be upon him has clearly said that 'I am the final messenger of Allah there is no more prophets or messengers from God Allah after me.

"'I am leaving you the final Quran. There is no changes. It is the final book of Allah and this is the final completion of Islam. There is no more changes to it and no one has the right to claim to be a Prophet or to change the Quran or change Islam.'

"It is mentioned in the Quran that there is no doubt in this book no one has the right to disrespect the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and no one has the right to disrespect the Prophet of Islam Muhammad Peace be upon him.

"If I had not done this others would and there would have been more killing and violence in the world.
