Equifax, which supplies credit information and other information services, said Thursday that a data breach could have potentially affected 143 million consumers in the United States.

The population of the U.S. was about 324 million as of Jan. 1, 2017, according to the Census Bureau, which means the Equifax incident affects a huge portion of the country.

Equifax said it discovered the breach on July 29. "Criminals exploited a U.S. website application vulnerability to gain access to certain files," the company said.

Shares of Equifax fell more than 5 percent in after-hours trading.

The company said the exposed data include names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, addresses and some driver's license numbers, all of which Equifax aims to protect for its customers.

Equifax added that 209,000 U.S. credit card numbers were obtained, in addition to "certain dispute documents with personal identifying information for approximately 182,000 U.S. consumers."

Scientists who study viruses have long tried to harness their power to cause illness in healthy cells, and engineer them to attack and destroy cancer cells.

Now researchers at Washington University say they have shown that the Zika virus can kill stem cells in brain tumors in the lab. Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause severe brain damage in the developing fetus if the mother catches the virus when pregnant.

Since Zika affects stem cells in the fetus’ brain, scientists theorized that it might be able to infect stem cells in brain tumors.

“We take a virus, learn how it works and then we leverage it,” said Dr. Michael Diamond, a professor of molecular microbiology, pathology and immunology. “Let’s take advantage of what it’s good at, use it to eradicate cells we don’t want. Take viruses that would normally do some damage and make them do some good.”

Researcher Zhe Zhu thought that glioblastoma stem cells, which stubbornly resist chemotherapy and radiation to regrow in most patients, looked a lot like the stem cells in a fast growing fetal brain. Since the Zika virus kills those fetal cells, maybe it would do the same to the tumor cells.

Instead of injecting Zika virus into the brain, the scientists engineered a designer version of the virus that would be better controlled by the immune system if it invaded healthy cells.

They tested the Zika virus on glioblastoma stem cells that had been surgically removed from patients. The virus killed the cancer stem cells, which are most resistant to standard therapies. The experiment also worked in mice with brain tumors. The tumors shrunk and the mice lived longer than those treated with a placebo. It’s important to note that an experiment that works in a test tube, or works in a mouse, will not necessarily work in people.

After some Black Lives Matter activists exercised their first amendment right to protest the continued employment of an obviously poorly trained cop at best, McNesby continued to rally behind him.
On Thursday, McNesby called Black Lives Matter protesters “animals.” As those who study the importance of language know, designating others subhuman is the first step in having no remorse for cutting them down in cold blood.

“When you go to work each day, you shouldn’t have to worry that a pack of rabid animals will suddenly show up at your home and openly threaten your family,” said McNesby. “These are not activists, they are racist hate groups determined to instigate violence.”
Oh, and about that officer who had the Nazi tattoo—obviously not an animal in McNesby’s mind.

According to another HuffPo report, last September, Officer Ian Hans Lichtermann was caught on social media with what looked to be part of the official insignia of Adolph Hitler’s Nazi Party on his arm: an eagle with outstretched wings, topped by the word “Fatherland.”
Other fun facts: In 2010, Lichtermann’s name showed up in a hacked database of visitors to neo-Nazi and white supremacist websites, and research by the anti-fascist website Philly Antifa shows photos of Lichtermann dressing up as a Nazi to participate in historical re-enactments.
Of this guy McNesby said, “I’ve seen [the tattoo photo]. It’s an eagle. Not a big deal.”
Mayor Kenney, however, called the tattoo “deeply offensive.”
By the way, that officer—the Nazi—is still policing the streets of Philadelphia, as is the guy who shot two people in the back.

DENVER HEALTH NURSES SUSPENDED AFTER OPENING BODY BAG TO SEE MAN'S GENITALS

Five nurses at Denver Health Medical Center were suspended for three weeks after they inappropriately viewed a deceased patient’s body and talked about it, a hospital spokesman confirmed to Denver7 Investigates Tuesday.
A tip to Denver7 said the nurses disciplined admired the size of the deceased patient’s genitals and at one point opened a body bag to view parts of the body. A hospital spokesman confirmed details of the incident.
A different nurse heard one of the disciplined nurses make a comment in May that the nurse felt was inappropriate and reported it to hospital staff, Denver Health Medical Center spokesman Josh Rasmussen said.
“Multiple staff members viewed the victim while he was incapacitated, including after he was deceased,” a Denver Police report says. “The complainant, Risk Management for Denver Health, made a mandatory report.”
Rasmussen originally said two nurses were disciplined after the internal investigation, but later said five nurses were suspended following the investigation's conclusion.
The report says the incidents occurred between March 31 and April 3, 2017, but weren’t reported until May 8.
Rasmussen said although the nurses received discipline considered “serious,” four nurses ultimately returned to work. One nurse no longer is employed by the hospital, but wasn't terminated. The nurses will have a record of the discipline placed in their personnel files, Rasmussen said.
Denver Police confirm they responded to the incident but say the decision was made to have Denver Health Medical Center handle the issue internally.

House Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday told “Dreamers” to “rest easy” because his chamber will work with President Trump to come up with a plan to reform the immigration process a day after the administration began phasing out the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals program.

“We will not be advancing legislation that doesn’t have the support of President Trump because we are going to work with the president on how to do this legislation,” Ryan (R-Wis.) said during a news conference of Republican House leaders.
“I think people should rest easy, and I think the president made the right call and the president also gave us the time and space we’re going to need to find where that compromise is,” Ryan said.

“This is a home that people know and they don’t know any other country as a home. I think there’s a serious humane issue here that needs to be dealt with, but it’s only fitting and reasonable that we also deal with some of the root causes of this problem because what we don’t want to have happen is another DACA problem 10 years from now. We want to make sure that we to fix this issue for these kids — for these young people — and address the root cause of the problem.”
But in the Senate, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s patience was already running out.
The New York Democrat called for a bill to protect the 800,000 young illegal immigrants — also known as “Dreamers” — caught in limbo over Trump’s decision, or his party would attach it to any must-pass legislation this fall.

“If a clean Dream Act does not come to the floor in September, we are prepared to attach it to other items this fall until it passes,” Schumer said at a news conference with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other colleagues.
