WARSAW—Amid fears of a rollback of Poland’s democratic freedoms, President Barack Obama had a harsh message of concern during a trip here for a NATO summit. But viewers of Poland’s main evening news program saw exactly the opposite.

Obama’s tough message on Friday, standing alongside Polish President Andrzej Duda, was that he “expressed to President Duda our concerns over certain actions and the impasse around the Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal.”

“More work needs to be done,” Obama said. “And as your friend and ally, we’ve urged all parties to work together to sustain Poland’s democratic institutions.”

But viewers of Telewizja Polska, the main public broadcaster, saw a very different suggestion on the evening news.

“Ninety-five per cent of the meeting was about issues of NATO and security, but Obama praised Polish efforts at democracy,” the reporter said. “Concerning the issue of the constitutional tribunal, he said he is sure that spreading democratic values in Poland will not stop.”

Then the broadcaster played a clip of Obama’s friendly cushioning of his criticism, while skipping the substance of the message.

In the clip played on Polish television, Obama was also translated by a dubbed voice-over as saying that “Poland is and will be an example of democracy for the whole world.”

What he actually said was that “Poland stands and needs to continue stand as an example for democratic practices around the world.”

polfag here

numerous nationwide polish media outlets are talking about Obama being concerned about polish democracy:

There has been a lot of talk lately about polish government/poland rocking the boat, trying to infringe on democratic values. However, most of the people who hasnt been keeping watch on polish political stage - aka majority of the world including poles, might not be aware that its just a part of a political struggle between 2 major parties trying to get back at each other. Theres been a major shift about a year ago in which new establishment won election resulting in demotion of old ruling establishment to opposition status. As always, such change is followed by new ruling party "extracting" all the important political and cushy posts (given the fact that Im 25 Ive witnessed about 3 similar transitions).

Alas, neither political party is interested in changing status quo or democracy for that matter. This is compounded by the fact that all major polish political parties have the same centrist political agenda. No wonder political debate here frequently ends up in name calling - there are almost no major political issues on which those parties disagree on. We dont have any truly left-wing or right-wing representative bodies getting more than 2% votes in the elections. Everybody tries to maintain neutral stance, avoiding any real talk. You can expect it to quiet down in the following years, until the next transition of power of course - 4 or 8 years from now.

sounds like political power in your country landed in the hands of oligarchs and they just do whole political business behind the closed door.

A 7-year-old boy fascinated by garbage trucks is celebrating his birthday in a unique way.

It's all thanks to a garbage company that gave him a birthday surprise he'll never forget. KATC's Travis Guillory was there when this birthday boy's dream came true.

Garbage is something that's a chore for most people, but for Cohen Mahoney, it's a passion.

Cohen said, "When people are finished with plastic things I go and take them and put them in that recycle bin."

His mom, Candace Mahoney, said, "Every time we drive somewhere, he's pointing out the different trucks, and he'll look at the different garbage cans. He'll get on Kids YouTube and look at the different mechanics and the different types of arms and is it an old-fashioned, is it a new one, does it have the lift from the front or the lift from the side."

It's a fascination that's been around since Cohen was a toddler. Now, on his seventh birthday, one garbage company made his day extra special.

Cohen said, "When I saw [the garbage truck], I thought we forgot to put out our trash, and I thought it was garbage day."

His mom added, "I think, if anything, it's going to add to his passion. Maybe he'll eventually be employed at RS. He says he wants to be a garbage man, so we're going to support whatever his passion is."

Republic Services gave Cohen a toy garbage truck, a gift basket, trash cans, and even clothing with his name monogrammed.

Candance Mahoney thanked the company saying, "To come and do something like that for a kid that age, it really is exciting for him. I think it's just unbelievable. I mean, it says a lot about where we live and the community that we have. I think it's just awesome."

>Wealthy Australian businessman Dick Smith is preparing to stir a diplomatic hornets’ nest, in the hope of securing the freedom of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

>Mr Smith has written to the United States and Swedish ambassadors in Canberra warning their relationship with Australia will suffer unless the four-year legal stand-off over Assange, holed up in Ecuador’s London embassy, is resolved.

>The outspoken entrepreneur and aviator has visited Mr Assange three times, most recently last month, and revealed he had toyed with the idea of using a helicopter to airlift the Australian from the embassy.

>He has made a YouTube video attacking the US and Sweden for their role in Mr Assange’s predicament and promised that is only the start of a new and determined campaign to “free” the embattled Australian, with a series of newspaper advertisements to follow.

>“I’m not going to give up on this — it needs to be resolved one way or the other,” Mr Smith told The Australian. “Julian is an Australian and Australians should be treated fairly. This is only going to get worse and worse for them (Sweden and the US).”

>Mr Assange moved into the Ecuadorean Embassy in London in June 2012, to avoid extradition to Sweden on sexual assault charges, which he denies and claims are politically driven. He was subsequently granted political asylum by Ecuador.

>Mr Assange claimed that if he was extradited the Swedes would hand him over to the US, to be prosecuted over the WikiLeaks release of classified American documents.

>Mr Smith believes the subsequent stand-off has taken a toll on Mr Assange and that the US needs to resolve it by declaring emphatically it has no intention of seeking his extradition, and Sweden should send police to interview him in London.

>“This time I saw him, he looked very white — he hasn’t seen the sun for four years,” Mr Smith said. “This needs to be resolved.

>“If I found some classified documents, I would give them to our government. But you need people like Assange, because governments don’t always do the right thing. We need whistleblowers.”

>Mr Smith warned there would be “horrendous” consequences for the Australia-American relationship if Mr Assange was taken into custody by the US, and threatened to target Swedish companies such as Ikea and the Saab aerospace and defence group.

>In his letter to US Ambassador John Berry, which he also sent to Swedish Ambassador Par Ahlberger, Mr Smith links Sweden’s role in the Assange stand-off to its desire to protect its arms trade, and likens that to the country’s “immoral” conduct during World War II.

>“Sweden continued to supply iron ore to Germany throughout the Second World War, while young Australians and Americans were being killed trying to defend Europe,” Mr Smith’s letter says.

>Neither ambassador responded to requests for comment yesterday. Mr Smith said he had a record of helping to secure the release of Australians detained in controversial circumstances, having campaigned for David Hicks, who was released from Guantánamo Bay in 2007, and asylum seeker Peter Qasim, who was freed from detention in 2005.

>The FBI doesn’t need a warrant to collect private IP addresses and other computer-related data during probes and dragnets, a federal court has ruled. The judge said the FBI’s actions were within constitutional bounds, rejecting privacy concerns.

>A court in Virginia declined to side with child pornography suspect Edward Matish, who accused the government of “unconstitutional” access to his private computer in February 2015.

>Matish was one of 137 people charged in the probe of Playpen, a website that contained “tens of thousands” of child pornography postings of both videos and pictures.

>Having officially obtained a warrant, in December 2014 the FBI installed a malware on Playpen's server to obtain identifying information from everyone logging into the website. Such tactic is officially known as “network investigative technique” or NIT.

>The feds did not immediately shut Playpen down, but seized control over it and continued operating it from a government facility in the Eastern District of Virginia.

>Between February and March 4, 2015, the malware automatically netted any users who input their logins and passwords. It then made their computers send certain information to the FBI, including IP addresses and operating system names.

http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2016-07-08/gun-stocks-reach-record-highs-after-dallas-police-shooting

>Stock prices for weapons and police gear rose as shootings stoked interest in defense, fears of stricter gun control.

>Gun manufacturers saw their stock prices rise immediately after Thursday night's shooting of police officers in Dallas, a grim business trend fed by fears of mass shootings and stricter gun regulation.

>Shares of Smith & Wesson opened Friday at a record high price $29.74, up from Thursday's close of $28.26.

>Five officers were killed and seven more were injured by a sniper in the Dallas attack, which took place during a demonstration against police violence. Two African-American men were killed by police earlier this week in Minnesota and Louisiana, and peaceful demonstrations took place in cities around the U.S. Black Lives Matters organizers have denounced the Dallas attack.

>Sturm, Ruger & Company stocks also rose the morning after the Dallas shooting, reaching a midday trading high Friday of $68.14, up from its closing price on Thursday of $65. Taser International, which produces non-lethal stun devices and Axon body cameras used by police departments nationwide, also opened higher on Friday at $26.99, up from its previous closing price of $25.77. Digitally Ally, another body camera maker, opened at $6.57, up from its Thursday closing price of $4.13.

>John Blank, chief equity strategist for Zacks Investment Research, points out "This is the share price pattern on days like this,” noting that both Sturm and Smith & Wesson received a similar-sized boost after the mass shooting in Orlando in June that killed 49 people.

>“In short, more public shootings with guns in the news headlines apparently means more demand for guns,” Blank says. “I assume the idea is everyday people in America go out and buy more guns to protect themselves when they see this kind of public gun-driven chaos out there.”

>Fears that the Obama administration will increase gun control have also spurred sales of guns and increases in their share values throughout his term. Smith & Wesson’s stock has risen steadily from 3.59 in July 2011 to Friday's opening of $29.74. During that same time Sturm’s share price has grown from $23.37 to $67.62.

>President Barack Obama condemned the Dallas shootings as "a vicious, calculated, and despicable attack on law enforcement," and repeated his plea for awareness about the risks of gun violence that accompany easy access to weapons.

>"When people are armed with powerful weapons, unfortunately, it makes attacks like these more deadly and more tragic," he said Friday during a summit in Poland. "In the days ahead, we will have to consider those realities as well. In the meantime, today, our focus is on the victims and their families."

Makes sense. It's been well-reported by now, since mass shootings have been covered so often, that every big/politicized shooting incident results in a spike of gun sales (people fearing that gov't is going to ban guns, if you can't figure out why -- some are revolution nuts, but others smartly presume from precedent that any assault rifle or handgun ban will not require surrender of existing privately-owned weapons). It's usually silly for stock prices to track short-term profit spikes, since only those with enough shares to get decent dividends would really benefit, but that's what they do.

Both the stock price and actual profits for gun companies will tank should a categorical weapons ban ever pass, however, so this is the worst time to buy long-term.

Kobe Bryant has received a one-of-a-kind retirement gift from rapper Snoop Dogg: a Los Angeles Lakers-themed convertible.
Bryant retired from the Lakers in April after 20 seasons in L.A.

The convertible is a custom 1967 soft top Pontiac Parisienne convertible.

He posted a picture on Twitter of him and Snoop standing by the purple and gold car Wednesday.

'Unbelievable retirement gift from my man Snoop today,' Bryant wrote.

Snoop Dogg put up some shots of the car on Instagram, too.

'The gift that keeps on giving. Enjoy it mamba,' he wrote.

Its hood features pictures of Bryant alongside other Lakers greats like Magic Johnson, James Worthy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

But the biggest picture is one of Snoop himself in a Lakers jersey.

Politicians are supposed to be saints.

When they do something remotely wrong they're supposed to face the harshest of consequences.

The Metropolitan police said they received 599 allegations between Friday 24 June, the day the result was revealed, and Saturday 2 July.

Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, the Met commissioner, said that the vote had allegedly been “directly referenced or alluded to” in 23 incidents.

The force said it had received eight allegations that Polish or other European communities had been targeted.

The Met, which is Britain’s largest force, usually averages between 20 and 50 reports of hate crime a day. On Sunday 26 June it received 62 reports and the following Tuesday it had 64.

The figures were revealed in a letter from Hogan-Howe to Keith Vaz, the chair of the home affairs committee, which on Tuesday announced an investigation into hate crime.
