Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan met Thursday with Iran's Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Mohammad Baqeri in Ankara to discuss greater levels of military cooperation between the two nations.

http://www.trunews.com/article/turkey-moves-to-closer-relationship-with-iran

Turkey and Iran have agreed to boost military cooperation after talks in Ankara this week between the Iranian armed forces chief of staff and Turkish leaders, President Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman said on Thursday. Iran's military chief General Mohammad Baqeri met Erdogan on Wednesday on a visit that Turkish media said was the first to Turkey by an Iranian military chief of staff since the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran. Erdogan spokesman Ibrahim Kalin described the visit as "fruitful and successful", adding that talks focused on counter-terrorism, the battle with Islamic State, and a joint effort by Iran, Turkey and Russia to stem the fighting in parts of Syria:

>"An agreement was reached to hold further high-level visits from now on. A series of activities will also be held to boost military cooperation."

Baqeri's trip to Ankara came days ahead of a planned visit by U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis. Ties between NATO allies Turkey and the United States have been strained by Washington's support for Kurdish YPG fighters leading the assault on Islamic State in the Syrian city of Raqqa. Turkey says the YPG is indistinguishable from the outlawed Kurdish PKK which has been waging an insurgency in southeast Turkey for more than 30 years. Washington sees it as a vital ally in the fight to defeat Islamic State. Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted Baqeri as saying he had agreed with Turkey to hold joint training courses, and increase counter-terrorism intelligence sharing. He said Erdogan would visit Iran in the near future.

Spanish police have been searching for 22-year-old Younes Abouyaaqoub after he was suspected to be the driver of the Fiat Talento van that plowed into pedestrians, killing 13 and injuring hundreds more.

So far, 5 suspects have been gunned down in Cambrils after ramming into more pedestrians with an Audi A3 and stabbing people inside the town, killing a woman and injuring 6.

3 have been arrested in the town of Ripoll and one has been arrested after the Alcanar explosions, also killing one woman and injuring six.

Five of the 16 deaths during the attacks have now been identified:
Jared Tucker, 43, American
Ian Moore Wilson, unknown age, Canadian
Francisco López Rodríguez, 60s, Spanish
Bruno Gulotta, 35, Italian
Luca Russo, 25, Italian

A 74-year old Portuguese woman, a 40-year old Argentine-Spanish woman, and a Belgian also died in the mayhem.

Unfortunately, 7-year-old British-Australian Julian Cadman was separated from his family and is still missing. His mother was also severely injured in the attack.

The lost crew of an 18th century Dutch merchant ship has been found by marine archaeologists who were racing against time to preserve the wreck before it is destroyed forever by an invasive sea worm.

The Rooswijk sank in bad weather off the coast of Ramsgate in Kent in January 1740, on her second voyage, and was first discovered by a diver in 2005. But after preliminary excavations it was covered up.

However a survey by Historic England last summer revealed the ship was in danger of being destroyed by an invasive ship worm, which is moving to British coastlines from the Mediterranean.

The shifting and treacherous Goodwin Sands has also left the hull exposed to salt water and air, meaning that archaeologists have had to act fast to record or bring up endangered timbers, canons and artefacts.

Not only have the new excavations uncovered three wooden treasure chests, believed to contain a fortune in silver ingots bound for the East Indies, but for the first time bones of the victims have been found among the wreck.

Little is known about the crew and passengers of the Rooswijk. As well as sailors, there would have been soldiers protecting the precious cargo, children, wives, and even 'guests of the lower decks' - a polite term for prostitutes. Around 250 people in total were on board when the ship sank and it is thought none survived.

Personal items of everyday life, including leather shoes, knives, belt buckles and pewter jugs were also recovered from the ship.

Mark Dunkley, a marine archaeologist for Historic England, said: "With the finds that we're bringing up we're seeing how they lived on board, and now with the remains we are seeing how they died as well. They were probably drowned or crushed as the ships collapsed or the cannons came loose and rolled across the decks.

"We have started finding and recovering bodies. It's a highly significant assemblage because it is so rare to find a lost crew on a shipwreck, captured in time at the moment when a catastrophe happened. In that sense its like an underwater Pompeii."

The team is planning to take DNA samples of the bones to find out whether any of the victims have descendants who are still alive today, as well as X-raying the mysterious seamen's chests to find what treasure lies within, before they are opened up

However in the shorter term archaeologists are battling against time, and the elements, to conserve the site from a damaging invader before it is lost forever.

"The ship is threatened by a new type of ship worm which has come from the Mediterranean Sea and is moving north because the sea around Britain is getting warmer with climate change," added Mr Dunkley.

"It's reached as far north as Felixstowe so any shipwreck below that latitude is threatened by it. It burrows into any wood which speeds up decay and makes the wrecks vulnerable. It attacks the timbers and wooden chests. So it's important that we start conserving these things now to prevent any more damage."

The Rooswijk was owned by the Dutch East India Company and was bound for Jakarta to trade silver and copper for pepper, nutmeg and porcelain when it sank.

Soon after the ship foundered a chest containing letters washed up at Deal in Kent, which identified the captain as Daniel Rousiers, and named around a dozen other crew. But the identities of the rest of the victims were lost in time.

Now a protected wreck site the ships remains are owned by the Dutch government and managed by Historic England on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Most of the finds, and ingots, will be returned to The Netherlands, although archaeologists are hoping to put some of the treasures on display in Britain.
>>
John Glen, Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, said: "The shipwrecks around our coastline are amazing snapshots of Europe's seafaring and naval history and it is important that we study them while we can.

"The Rooswijk excavation will help recover and preserve extraordinary artefacts."

Around 2,000 ships are known to be wrecked off Goodwin Sands and the shifting landscape mean they are often uncovered by storms or high tides.

Martijn Manders, Project Leader of the Rooswijk Excavation and Maritime Heritage Programme Manager at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands said: "The Goodwin sands has been a treacherous place for ships throughout the centuries and is now a treasure trove for archaeologists.

"The rapidly shifting sands means that the site is even more exposed now than it was during our initial dives to assess the condition of the Rooswijk last year. This makes the excavation urgent."

Historic England will be holding open days to view finds from the ship between August 19 and September 16.

In partnership with ProPublica, Google News Lab is launching a new tool to track hate crimes across America. Powered by machine learning, the Documenting Hate News Index will track reported hate crimes across all 50 states, collecting data from February 2017 onward.
Data visualization studio Pitch Interactive helped craft the index, which collects Google News results and filters them through Google’s natural language analysis to extract geographic and contextual information. Because they are not catalogued in any kind of formal national database, a fact that inspired the creation of the index to begin with, Google calls the project a “starting point” for the documentation and study of hate crimes. While the FBI is legally required to document hate crimes at the federal level, state and local authorities often fail to report their own incidents, making the data incomplete at best.

https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/18/google-documenting-hate-news-index-propublica/

The initiative is a data-rich new arm of the Documenting Hate project which collects and verifies hate incidents reported by both individual contributors and by news organizations. The Hate News Index will keep an eye out for false positives (casual uses of the word “hate” for example), striking a responsible balance between machine learning and human curation on a very sensitive subject. Hate events will be mapped onto a calendar in the user interface, though users can also use a keyword search or browse through algorithmic suggestions. For anyone who’d like to take the data in a new direction, Google will open sourced its data set, making it available through GitHub.

The project’s hope is that journalists can harness its combination of visualized data and news indexing to report more effectively on the aggregate data and incidents that might otherwise fall through the cracks.

NEW YORK -- William Johnson, Henry Beckam Jr. and Edward Field fought in World War II on the side of history that believed in freedom for all.

"I am a Tuskeege Airman," Johnson said.

"I went into the Army believing that we had to defeat the Nazis," Field said.

"I can still tell you my Army serial number," Beckam said.

Field flew on planes that dropped bombs. "I flew 27 missions and on all of them we were shot at," he told CBS News' Jericka Duncan.

"Even after fighting that war, you thought things would change for the better?" Duncan asked.

"It did," he replied.

"When you look at what's happening today?" she asked.

"It's terrible," he said.

The 93-year-old Field calls the images out of Charlottesville, Virginia repulsive.

"When the president of the United States makes a comment saying, 'what about the "alt-left" that came charging,'" Duncan said.

"Well it's idiotic," he said.

"It's unbelievable that we have the Nazi party here in the United States," Beckam said.

Beckam was drafted in 1942 and served as a mechanic for the Army air force. He said there's no place in the U.S. for the Nazi flag.

"God wrote the Bible ... it doesn't say anything in there about the color of the skin makes one better than the other," Beckam said

And 90-year-old William Johnson was with the Tuskegee Airmen, a segregated group of black military personnel who were not allowed to serve alongside whites.

"And it is not a better world when the President of the United States, OK, gives into racism and bigotry and don't understand how far we've come towards freedom and equality for everybody," he said.

More than 70 years later, the fight to defeat a hateful ideology is still alive. On the front lines once again are people willing to stand up and face what's in front of them.

YouTube is now demonetizing videos from content creators deemed too controversial for the platform, and conservatives and independents are being heavily impacted.

The move follows YouTube’s announcement earlier in August to catch and flag “controversial religious and supremacist” content hosted on the popular video-hosting website. Political and social commentators on YouTube are feeling the hurt—and they believe that they may be on a blacklist for having the wrong opinions.

The Daily Caller previously spoke to several popular commentary YouTubers who expressed skepticism of the system when the move was first announced last week.

http://dailycaller.com/2017/08/11/conservative-and-independent-youtube-channels-hit-by-censorship-and-demonetization/

Independent journalist and activist Luke Rudkowski, who runs WeAreChange, told The Daily Caller that hundreds of his videos were demonetized in a single day on Thursday, effectively killing his ability to earn a living on YouTube.
“Having had 660 of my videos demonetized in one day left me a little stunned since this is the core for my income but left me with the impression that this was done on purpose,” said Rudkowski, who said that the videos included some of his most popular videos from years ago. “This was videos from years ago predominately targeting the most viewed videos which has eviscerated my income.”

The dow jones hit a record high under Obama too. Not just Trump but the GOP in general hasn't managed to pass any significant legislation with respect to our economic fundamentals, so that's all Obama. We already tried corporate tax cuts and deregulation under Bush.
In any case, what does it matter, working class wages will remain stagnant as always. The only significant way our single-party government has affected the finances of the working class has been to increase their insurance premiums by causing artificial uncertainty in insurance markets in the hopes of making our insurance system insufferable for them.

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/16/key-obamacare-subsidies-will-continue-despite-threats-by-trump.html

>The federal government will make crucial Obamacare-related subsidy payments to health insurers in August despite threats by President Donald Trump to end them, a White House spokesman said Wednesday.

>The decision to make the August payments came a day after the Congressional Budget Office warned that Obamacare premiums wouldsoar an additional 20 percent above projected price increases if the payments are ended in 2018.

>Uncertainty over whether the so-called cost-sharing reimbursements will continue has already led some insurers to exist Obamacare markets next year, or to ask for significantly higher premiums for 2018.

>After the announcement Wednesday, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said Congress should act soon to guarantee that the CSRs will be paid to insurers through 2018

>The CSRs, worth about $7 billion this year, compensate insurers for offering qualified low- and moderate-income Obamacare customers discounts in their their out-of-pocket health costs, including co-payments and deductibles. Those discounts are mandated by law.

>Most people who buy health coverage on HealthCare.gov and other government-run insurance marketplaces qualify for the reduced charges. Almost 6 million people qualified last year.

>Trump, peeved about the failure of his fellow Republicans in the Senate to pass an Obamacare replacement bill had threatened to end CSR payments to insurers

>But just as he has done every month since taking office, Trump on Wednesday agreed to let them continue.

Stephen K. Bannon, the White House chief strategist, seemed to take issue with President Trump on North Korea, attacked white supremacists as “clowns” and “losers” and described his efforts against administration rivals in an unusual interview Wednesday with The American Prospect, a progressive magazine.

>The interview with magazine co-editor and columnist Robert Kuttner was initiated by Bannon, Kuttner said, in an Anthony Scaramucci-style phone call out of the blue in response to a column Kuttner had written on China.

>“Bannon was in high spirits when he phoned me Tuesday afternoon to discuss the politics of taking a harder line with China, and minced no words describing his efforts to neutralize rivals at the Departments of Defense, State and Treasury,” wrote Kuttner.

>“’They’re wetting themselves,’ he said, proceeding to detail how he would oust some of his opponents at State and Defense.”

>On North Korea, Bannon said: “’Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that ten million people in Seoul don’t die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don’t know what you’re talking about, there’s no military solution here, they got us.’”

>That comment seemed at odds with Trump’s “fire and fury” threats to use military force against North Korea.

>On China, Bannon told Kuttner that the United States was at “economic war” and warned that “one of us is going to be a hegemon in 25 or 30 years and it’s gonna be them if we go down this path,” according to the article.

>“On Korea, they’re just tapping us along. It’s just a sideshow,” he said.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/08/17/steve-bannon-contradicts-trump-on-north-korea-talks-of-rivals-and-white-supremacists-in-unusual-interview-with-progressive-magazine/?utm_term=.7dcc9d4985f3

>Bannon was also asked by Kuttner to comment on the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville last weekend and President Trump’s reluctance to condemn the participants.

>“Ethno-nationalism — it’s losers. It’s a fringe element,” Bannon told the magazine. “I think the media plays it up too much, and we gotta help crush it, you know, eh, help crush it more.”

>“These guys are a collection of clowns,” he added.

>The remarks were startling coming from Bannon, who spent more than four years running the far-right website Breitbart News before he was tapped to join Trump’s campaign.

>Bannon, the site’s former executive chair, has called the Breitbart “a platform of the alt-right.”

>The alt-right, by some definitions, is a small, deeply conservative movement that seeks a whites-only state. It was his strategy to use the site to channel white supremacist support for Trump and provide a mouthpiece for his populist message during the 2016 election, a move that helped secure him a senior role in the administration.

>In the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, which left a counterprotester dead and others injured, civil rights leaders have called on Trump to fire Bannon over his ties to the white nationalist community, as The Washington Post has reported.

>Asked by reporters Tuesday if he still had confidence in his chief strategist, Trump deflected.

>“He’s not a racist, I can tell you that,” Trump said. “But we’ll see what happens with Mr. Bannon.”

>Kuttner wrote in Wednesday’s article that he was surprised when he got an email from one of Bannon’s assistants saying he wanted to arrange a meeting. The two ended up speaking by phone on Tuesday afternoon, according to the article.

>When the conversation turned to race and the events in Charlottesville, Bannon dodged questions about his role in cultivating the alt-right, according to the article. He also faulted Democrats for focusing on identity politics.
>>
>“The longer they talk about identity politics, I got ’em,” he said. “I want them to talk about racism every day. If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats.”

>Kuttner said he was puzzled by the fact that Bannon would call an editor at a progressive magazine and “assume that a possible convergence of views on China trade might somehow paper over the political and moral chasm on white nationalism.”

>“The question of whether the phone call was on or off the record never came up,” he said. “This is also puzzling, since Steve Bannon is not exactly Bambi when it comes to dealing with the press. He’s probably the most media-savvy person in America.”
