Way to complain about nothing. It's such a small number compared to the total number of employed people. Isn't there something more substantive to be outraged about?

This reminds me of when republicans say tort reform is going to fix all of healthcare.

http://www.nasdaq.com/article/americans-prefer-bottled-water-to-carbonated-soda-20170310-00283

>Americans now drink more bottled water than carbonated soft-drinks, amid concerns for health effects of sugary drinks, according to Industry tracker Beverage Marketing Corp.

>In a latest report, bottled water became the largest beverage category by volume in 2016 in the U.S., surpassing sodas.

>In the country, total bottled water volume grew to 12.8 billion gallons last year from 11.8 billion gallons in 2015. Bottled-water consumption reached 39.3 gallons per capita, while carbonated soft drinks were at 38.5 gallons. However, soda still generated more revenue of $39.5 billion in retail sales last year, compared to $21.3 billion for water.

>Beverage Marketing projected that bottled water would hit the 50-gallon per-capita consumption mark by the middle of next decade, while carbonated soft-drink per-capita consumption had exceeded 50 gallons in 2006.

>Michael Bellas, chairman-CEO of Beverage Marketing Corp., said in a statement, "Bottled water effectively reshaped the beverage marketplace. When Perrier first entered the country in the 1970s, few would have predicted the heights to which bottled water would eventually climb. Where once it would have been unimaginable to see Americans walking down the street carrying plastic bottles of water, or driving around with them in their cars' cup holders, now that's the norm."

>In February, another industry tracker Beverage Digest reportedly projected that bottled water volume consumption would surpass carbonated soft drinks in 2017.

With the hum of the Airbus CC-150 engines in the background, 3rd Canadian Division commander Brig.-Gen.f Simon Hetherington reminded troops deploying to Ukraine on Friday of the importance of their training mission.

The 120 Edmonton-based soldiers will spend the next six months in the west of the country training Ukrainian soldiers in preparation for their fight against Russian-backed separatists in the east of the country as part of a conflict that has been raging since the middle of 2014.

“What skills you’ve supplied them with will save their lives,” Hetherington said just before the troops boarded the plane.

Hetherington said the mission is “incredibly important.”

“They’ve got an armed forces that has been decimated over a number of years of neglect in terms of funding and age and time, so we are helping rebuild their armed forces,” he said.

“The challenge to this is they are rebuilding it while in combat in the east of the country.”

Outbound deputy commanding officer Maj. Alex Nitu said the aim of the mission is to enable the Ukrainian military to become self-sufficient in delivering its own training programs.

Nitu said the mission is being well-received by the Ukrainian military.

“The idea is we are going to work ourselves out of a job in all these things because they are going to become self-sufficient,” he said.

“(We are) building skill sets and professionalizing their force and getting to a point where they are institutionally capable of delivering all the training they require to themselves.”

Former Democratic Mayor of Fairfax, Va. Richard "Scott" Silverthorne pleaded guilty to a felony drug distribution charge on Monday. The former elected official was arrested in August on the charge according to USA Today.

Silverthorne was arrested on August 4 after selling $200 worth of methamphetamine to undercover officers in exchange for a group sexual encounter.

The ex-mayor will be held in custody until his sentencing hearing. The charge against him carries a maximum of a $500,000 fine and 40 years in prison.

Silverthorne was a substitute teacher in Fairfax County schools and served on the Fairfax City Council from 1990 until 2008 and again in 2011 before being elected mayor. Shortly before his arrest, Silverthorne won re-election for a third term as mayor. He resigned from office shortly after his August arrest.

Two other men were arrested on felony drug charges with Silverthorne during the undercover sting.

Ukrainian nazis of the extreme right group C14 confessed to illegal kidnapping of people for exchange in the East Ukraine. They wrote about this on their official Facebook page with the signature of Eugene Karasia nicknamed Vortex. According to the radicals, they kidnapped two random men, who were called "separatists" from the train, put them on their knees in a forest planting and called the of the police in DNR to demand an exchange of their neonazi partners captured by DNR militia.

During the conversation, the radicals threatened the captured men that "it would be very bad", and the interlocutors from the so-called. The MGB stated that "separs are not people."

According to Karas, the army patrol that he met complimented favorably on what was going on, recommending "not to hammer cattle heavily."

On what grounds the passengers of the unknown train were kidnapped, it is not specified in the record. The radicals themselves write that "during the preparation of the exchange, unknown patriots probably violated several laws."

It should be noted that there is no passenger rail link between LDNR and Kiev-controlled territories. With a high degree of probability, men were abducted at one of the existing stations in the Donetsk region.

Poland will seek the arrest and extradition of a Minnesota man exposed by the Associated Press as a former commander in an SS-led unit that burned Polish villages and killed civilians in World War II, prosecutors said Monday.

Prosecutor Robert Janicki said evidence gathered over years of investigation into U.S. citizen Michael K. confirmed "100 percent" that he was a commander of a unit in the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion.

He did not release the last name, in line with Poland's privacy laws, but the AP has identified the man as 98-year-old Michael Karkoc, from Minneapolis.

"All the pieces of evidence interwoven together allow us to say the person who lives in the U.S. is Michael K., who commanded the Ukrainian Self Defense Legion which carried out the pacification of Polish villages in the Lublin region," Janicki said.

The decision in Poland comes four years after the AP published a story establishing that Michael Karkoc commanded the unit, based on wartime documents, testimony from other members of the unit and Karkoc's own Ukrainian-language memoir.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/13/world/europe/scotland-referendum-independence.html

>Protesting Britain’s plans to exit the European Union, Scotland’s leader, Nicola Sturgeon, called on Monday for a referendum on Scottish independence as early as next year. The announcement was not unexpected, but it reflected the stark divisions in Britain as the government prepares to start the official process to exit the 28-nation bloc.

>Citing the fact that most Scottish voters had opposed a British exit in last year’s referendum — 62 percent voted in favor of staying in the European Union, compared with 48 percent in Britain over all — Ms. Sturgeon said that London had failed to address Scotland’s desire to remain in the single market after Britain leaves the European Union.

>“Not only is there no U.K.-wide agreement on the way ahead, but the U.K. government has not moved even an inch in pursuit of compromise and agreement,” Ms. Sturgeon said in a speech in Edinburgh. “Our efforts at compromise have instead been met with a brick wall of intransigence.”

>Scotland rejected independence from Britain in a closely watched vote in September 2014, and public opinion on the issue remains deeply divided. For Scotland to hold another legally binding referendum, the British Parliament would have to give its approval, as would the Scottish Parliament.

>Ms. Sturgeon’s comments came hours before the British Parliament was expected to clear the way for Prime Minister Theresa May to invoke Article 50, the formal procedure that sets off a two-year negotiation with the 27 other member states of the European Union.

>Ms. Sturgeon said her preferred date for a new vote would be in the autumn of 2018 or the spring of 2019, when the terms of a British exit from the bloc would be clearer.

>She said she would ask Scotland’s devolved legislature in Edinburgh to request approval from the British Parliament for the new referendum, known as a Section 30 order, next week.

>Mrs. May has accused Ms. Sturgeon and her Scottish National Party, which dominates politics in Scotland, of having an “obsession” with independence. But officials say it would be politically difficult for Mrs. May to refuse a new referendum outright.

>Ms. Sturgeon’s party won the 2015 election in Scotland on a manifesto that left open the door for another independence referendum should circumstances “materially change,” and she had cited a so-called Brexit — then considered highly unlikely — as an example of such a change.

>The real fight might be over timing: London, officials say, would prefer that Scotland put off another vote until after Britain has left the European Union, betting that voters will feel less confident about leaving once they have been pulled out of the bloc. as an example of such a change.
>>
>Ms. Sturgeon emphasized that Scotland should not be withdrawn from Europe against the will of its people. She also pointed to the weakness of the opposition Labour Party, citing predictions of a Conservative Party government in London “until 2030 or beyond.”

>Since the June referendum on Britain’s future in Europe, Ms. Sturgeon has argued that Scotland should be given a special status.

>So far, Mrs. May has ruled out any concessions. On Tuesday, Ms. Sturgeon said that there could be room for compromise if the prime minister were to offer a deal for Scotland, but she noted that no options had yet been offered.

Emails leaked to Business Insider show long-standing links between Nigel Farage and WikiLeaks' Julian Assange.

>Farage visited the Ecuadorean Embassy on Thursday but declined to say whether he had met Assange, who lives in exile there.

>UKIP has campaigned in the European Parliament on behalf of Assange.
LONDON — There was much confusion Thursday when Nigel Farage was spotted by BuzzFeed leaving the Ecuadorian Embassy in London — the residence of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

>Asked why he was there, Farage replied that he couldn't remember what he was doing in the building, adding, "I never discuss where I go or who I see."

>Emails leaked to Business Insider, however, reveal that UKIP under Farage's leadership had long-standing links to Assange.

>In February 2011, after a European Arrest Warrant had been issued in a case in which prosecutors sought to question Assange in connection with a sexual-assault allegation, UKIP repeatedly reached out to Assange to see how they could work together. Assange has not been charged in the case.

>The office of UKIP MEP Gerard Batten contacted Assange's lawyer Mark Stephens about "the possibility of meeting Mr Julian Assange."

>They added: "So far, UKIP London has been only British political party to openly support Mr Assange fight against EAW and his freedom of speech, and we would very much like to continue doing so.":
http://static3.businessinsider.com/image/58c28297dd0895583d8b4cff-891

>Leaked minutes of a subsequent meeting between Batten and Stephens reveal that Batten promised to table a motion in support of the WikiLeaks founder in the European Parliament. The party also offered the opportunity of a joint video press conference in Brussels.:

>"Is the Assange case about the alleged crimes committed or is it about the desire of America to extradite him from a compliant European country?" Batten asked MEPs.

>When the European Parliament denied the chance for a debate on Assange, Batten later called them "contemptible."

>In an appearance on the Russian state broadcaster Russia Today, Batten also labelled the attempts to extradite Assange as a "legalised kidnap.":

The Trump connection

>Farage has also advocated on behalf of Assange since WikiLeaks' involvement in the US presidential election.

>Speaking on his LBC radio show in January, Farage repeated Assange's denial of Russian involvement in the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and Democratic presidential nominee Hilary Clinton during the election.

>"Julian Assange ... is absolutely clear that all the information he has got is not from Russian sources," Farage said.

>The question of Farage's trip to meet Assange was raised at a White House press conference on Thursday.
>>
>The White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, was asked whether Farage had visited Assange "on behalf" of Trump. Spicer did not answer the question, saying only that "I don't keep [Farage's] schedule. I generally don't worry about what's going on across the pond."

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/03/egypt-pharaoh-ramses-statue-discovered-cairo/

>Archaeologists from Egypt and Germany have discovered the remains of an ancient Egyptian statue they believe could depict one of history's most famous rulers.

>The likeness of what may be Pharaoh Ramses II was found submerged in groundwater in a Cairo slum.

>"We found the bust of the statue and the lower part of the head and now we removed the head and we found the crown and the right ear and a fragment of the right eye," Khaled al-Anani, Egypt's antiquities minister, told Reuters.

>The 26-foot statue is made of quartzite and could be up to 3,000 years old. The Antiquities Ministry in Egypt is hailing the discovery as significant. The remains lack an inscription bearing the pharaoh's name, but the discovery's proximity to a temple devoted to Ramses suggest the statue is of his likeness, the ministry says.

>A limestone statue of Pharaoh Seti II, the grandson of Ramses II, was also found at the site.

>The discovery was made by a joint effort between Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities and researchers from the University of Leipzig. A rising water table, industrial waste, and piling rubble have made excavation of the ancient site difficult.

>Ramses II is one of the ancient world's most famous leaders. He ruled Egypt from 1279 to 1213 B.C., making his 60-year-long-rule one of the longest in ancient Egypt. His military exploits expanded Egypt's reach as far east as modern Syria and as far south as modern Sudan.

>The growth and prosperity seen in Egypt at the time earned him the title "Ramses the Great."

>Excavation will continue in Cairo and, if the remaining pieces can restore the statue, it will be erected at the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is set to open in 2018.

>The neighborhood in which the statue was discovered is in the eastern part of the city and was built over the ancient city of Heliopolis. The city was so named because it served as the center of worship for the ancient Egyptian sun god Re.

>Ramses was a chief worshiper of Re. He commissioned a number of temples in Heliopolis to be built for worshipping the sun god.

>It's also believed Ramses II may have been the pharaoh from the biblical Book of Exodus from whom Moses demanded the release of his people.
...
>>
>In 2006, archaeologists discovered one of the largest sun temples in Cairo under a marketplace. It was found to house a number of statues of Ramses II weighing as much as five tons. One such statue depicted the pharaoh seated and wearing a leopard's skin, indicating that he might have served as a high priest of Re when the temple was built.

>Much of what was once Heliopolis is now covered with residential buildings. Researchers believe many more remains of the ancient world lie hidden under the wider city of Cairo.

>The police chief in Wilmington, North Carolina, has publicly lambasted one of his officers. The officer recently pulled over a local attorney moonlighting as an Uber driver and told the driver that he could not film the traffic stop.

>"Taking photographs and videos of people that are in plain sight, including the police, is your legal right," Chief Ralph Evangelous said in a Wednesday statement published on the department’s Facebook page. "As a matter of fact, we invite citizens to do so when they believe it is necessary. We believe that public videos help to protect the police as well as our citizens and provide critical information during police and citizen interaction."

>The statement concluded: "A copy of this statement will be disseminated to every officer within the Wilmington Police Department."

>During the February 26 traffic stop, Jesse Bright began filming Sgt. Kenneth Becker when he and other law enforcement officers approached his car. Sgt. Becker, who appeared to be wearing a VieVu body-worn camera, told Bright that a "new law" forbids citizens from filming encounters with police.

>"Turn it off or I’ll take you to jail," Becker said.

Such an even-handed critique. Bravo.

The irony is that no reason is still a better reason to vote for democrats, even if it were true, is still in eveyr way better than the laundry list for reasons not to vote for republicans ever again.

the republicans have become caricatures of themselves. On literally every issue, they're bent on restricting the rights of others or embracing anti-science, pro-corporate, anti-working-class, and totally fueled by wanton misinformation policies.

It's almost uncanny how a good way to figure out what the republican platform has to offer on any issue is to look at the propaganda they spread about democrat policies. When they cried "death panels!", as it turns out, it's their own strategy that's going to leave people living shorter, more brutish lives. When they cry "treason!", it's the Republicans colluding with foreign intelligence to undermine democracy. When they cry "conspiracy!" it's Republicans conspiring. "Corporatism!" "Tyranny!".

They're playing us for idiots, hoping that if both sides cry the same about the other, people will draw a false equivalence, that they're equally bad. No, they're certainly not. The Republican platform crumbles with respect to their promises to the working class, when faced with the mildest scrutiny.
