Why is the F/A 18 so underrated?

underpowered poor range and aerodynamic problems like the falling leaf and offset weapons stations and the engines are too close together

Maybe the E/F/G models but the A+/++/C/D models have plenty of power.

It's a longer-ranged, faster F-16 with a worse payload.
This would be fine if it was the budget, baby version of a better aircraft like the F-16 is to the F-15, but it's not.
Still, the Growler is very nice and honestly what should be getting funded instead of stealth memes. Especially if/when electro-optical targeting actually pans out.
