Just got this 2015 Cannondale CAADX cyclomeme bike from some Asian dude.
Claims to be original spec but I couldn't find any evidence of Cannondale offering the CAADX with Ultegra shifters and Bengal disc brakes.
Also the frame is a 54, and I'm 6'1", so every chart appears to indicate it's way too small, but it feels fine to me..
Should I return it?
>>1097592
put a century down and see how it feels, if you feel fine after that dont worry about it.
>>1097592
54 should be fine for you with a long-ish stem, which is what appears to be on there.
First thing you should do is to get some foot retention. Second thing is to throw away the hardshell gators - easily the worst tire in existence.
>>1097603
>>1097593
Alright lads, going to take her out for 50k tomorrow.
First time on a bike with drop handles, and holy shit are these uncomfortable. Only a twisted French or Italian "mind" could come up with something so twisted and impractical...
I used to a ride a flat bar hybrid with the levers on the bar, and reaching for the brakes on the drop handles seems very difficult and with significant delay, how do I avoid getting killed in traffic tomorrow?
>Second thing is to throw away the hardshell gators - easily the worst tire in existence.
Really?

>>1097607
Drop bars are meant to give you more hand positions for more comfort. You aren't supposed to be riding on the drops most of the time but on the hoods. Also make sure that the bike fits you properly because bike fit matters a lot more on a road bike than a mountain.

CX bikes tend to be longer in the toptube than comparable road bikes. Like usually a 54 CX will have a top tube more like a 56 road, sometimes larger.
But now that I look at it, that one doesn't.
I'm 6'0" and ride a 56 with comparable geometry to the 56 CAADX (55.5 toptube). Long torso and short arms. I could ride a 54 if I wanted to be fashionable with a 110 stem. But I don't like much drop. I don't like showing hella seatpost either.
I guess what I'm saying is, if it's comfy and the bar drop doesn't bother you, it's fine. Everybody's different. Have fun.

Also if you could talk about the ride quality and anything else that comes to mind about it, that'd be neat
>>1098189
It's something like 14-18t, as you have the motor driving the chainring it can do so at a really fast cadence so you can gear it low and get tons of torque. Not sure how it behaves when the battery dies/is turned off, it probably goes to direct drive so you can accelerate and climb easily with the extra weight but you won't be going very fast.

I was lazy af when installing it and wanted to go ride. I cut it down to something more reasonable a few days later. Also I didn't do it internal because the monkeys at Specialized decided to drill a few holes in the frame and call it a day when designing the internal routing.
>>1098171
Sorry can you clue me in as to why reflectors are bad
>>1098130
>Can I just go out and buy the Tiagra crank set and install it?
Yes. Your bb shell is standard 68mm english threaded. It's still the same standard. That's 8 speed right? You can use a 8, 9 or 10 speed crank & an 8 or 9 speed chain ok. 11 speed is probably too far though. 600 tricolour is very nice stuff though. Your front mech will still work. You'd want a new chain. You'd probably want a new cassette too (good to wear them in together). You'd need a few different tools. You'd be devaluing a high end original bike.
I'd suggest you just put on a 13-26 cassette & a new chain. Expensive tires will make a HUGE difference as well.
>>1098135

>>1098287
It's not good to clamp the stem past the end of a carbon steerer.
>>1098306
most bikes come from factory with the stem flush with steerer. Dont fall for the "leave a spacer in case you get fat and can't reach any more" hype
TDF riders mostly ride flush, they are more likely to break a set of carbon bars from too much power than damage a fork.
>>1098283
All this is true?
What's wrong with the bar angle? I rode it today and it felt great
>>1098171
What does "QR" refer to here ?
>>1098319
The quick release skewers that secures the wheels at the dropout. Some people find it more aesthetically pleasing when the levers are aligned with the fork and seat- or chainstay. The only practical reasons I can think of are aerodynamics and the risk of catching something with the lever if it points forward and thereby accidentally opening the qr mechanism.
>>1098246
He is just being an asshole, nothing wrong with them.
>inb4 but the pros don't have them!!!
>>1098326
It's the "look at the pros" argument again. Racers have a negative stem, so supposedly everyone should.
But if you ride a lot, you'll want to lower it eventually. The lower position reduces wind drag and uses different muscles. No point in lowering it so that it's difficult/uncomfortable to ride though.

Alright guys here is my bike after I made some of the changes you all recommend,
Didn't drop the bar but went from +6/-6 so I can feel the position change, have to work incrementally
>>1098548
Looking very nice! That paint job looks even better without stuff detracting from it.
Try sliding the saddle back a little on the rails (1-1.5cm) and tipping the nose down about 5°. You'll have more adjustment starting from a neutral position as you find your fit with the bike.
Have you thought about the types of foot retention you might like? SPD (aka 2 bolt) is a good starting point if you've not used clipless pedals before.
What does it look like from the other side?

With the front basket, I can just toss my shit in there without worrying about panniers or bungees, and swing my leg over the back like normal.

I still ride only 26ers and hardtails. The instigator is designed as a 26+ bike. Going to stick with 26+ for a while still. Though if I was building a new bike I would probably just go 27.5 or 29 regular or plus, just because the industry has kind of moved that way and you'll have more selection of tires.
Anyway, the 'gator is a fantastic ride, though it could be a bit slacker on the HA.
>>1098922

>>1098923
>Oh well dumbass me forgot you can put smaller wheels on 29ers.
You can, but you've gotta watch out for ground clearance as the BB is lower relative to the axles compared to a 26" frame (even more so if you slap a 26" fork on it). Also you've got the things that usually come along with 29" frames like longer chainstays and steeper head angles which may be a downside to some people.
>>1098927

Allegedly they're useful for protecting valves from gunking up with mud, and avoiding damaging your valve head. Not that I endorse the use of either.

It's such a little part so I never thought to look into why they are there. Keeping dirt/sand off the valves makes sense though, I usually ride on canal paths that are sometimes just dirt, rocks, sand or all of that combined.
Don't worry though, I hardly ever ride on the road, I got like 7-8 miles of path I ride to work on but otherwise I don't ride my bike all that much.

I had it as a tringle setup before. 28/38/48 front and 16t rear. I couldn't really pedal at a comfortable cadence at higher speeds though even with the 48t which was the maximum that would fit without hitting the frame.
I recently installed this Hammerschmidt planetary gear crank. Such a beautiful invention. It uses 1 chainring (40t currently), and shifts internally to multiply it by 1.6. So I effectively have a 64t big ring now, and still 16t rear. I can pedal much more comfortable now at 40-50 kph without a ridiculously high cadence.
>>1099181
i'd have a fixed bike with risers for goofing round on as maybe my 13th bike always thought it'd be really fun but i guess a fancy keirin whip with a huge ratio is completely different.

Sweet ride man.
No shame in tilting your bars up a few degrees to get a better position on the hoods. You should not listen to anons here telling you not to becasue of >muh aesthetics. The single most important thing about a bike is the fit, and only you can tell which configuration is comfortable. Theres nothing wrong with wanting your bars a little higher up if youre new to road bikes. As you ride more, you will get used to the position, and will want to lower your bars again.
I dont know how familiar you are with bikes, but if you dont know allready, you should learn how to fix a flat. A good investment is a small saddle bag to carry a spare tube, tire levers and a multitool to bring with you, and a frame mounted pump. This way you wont need to walk or call a cab if you get a flat miles away home. Also, water bottles and bottle cages - stay hydrated friend.

He has plenty of spacers he can move about and can even flip the stem if needed, no need to be bringing multiple stems. It's not like it's so far off that the bike is going to be unridable.

He said to get a dropper, they're not all as expensive as a Reverb. There are some as cheap as about a quarter of the value of that bike.
>>1100666
That pos has a coil fork i think he can buy better upgrades first. Also you paid $700 for a altus shit bike. I'd return it and start over.
>>1100672
I'm not saying he should prioritise getting a dropper before other upgrades or that he should upgrade it at all, just that a dropper post wouldn't be as ludicrous an upgrade as you're implying. It's like if someone told him to upgrade the brakes and I said not to because a pair of Hopes could also cost as much as a high end dropper, but they're not the only choice.
An air fork would be a nice upgrade but that's gonna cost him over half the value of the bike if he goes new, and honestly I don't think it would make as much of a difference as a dropper if he's riding terrain that could benefit from one.
This is only my second garbon race bike after my 2010 Tarmac- It's definitely stiffer, and I enjoy the SRAM Red groupset. Getting the steerer cut soon.
>>1100678
A dropper is ultimately a convenience unless you're racing. An air fork is a qualitative upgrade that can't be substituted with simply taking a brief break and making a tool-free adjustment.
>>1100725
Yes you can achieve the same thing with a quick release clamp but it does require stopping, many people will simply not bother adjusting the saddle over varying terrain so it means either sacrificing seated pedalling efficiency (by having the saddle too low) or having the saddle in your way on rougher and more technical terrain. Also there are situations where it's just not viable or safe to stop and adjust the saddle.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as SI, is in fact, Metric/SI, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Metric plus SI. SI is not an measurement system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Metric system made useful by the Metric standards, and vital measures comprising a full system as defined by the International System of Units.
Many people taking measurements use a modified version of the Metric system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Metric which is widely used today is often called SI, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Metric system, developed by the Metric Project.
There really is a SI system, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. SI units are the base: the most basics unit in the system that relate to and determine the other measurements that you take. The base is an essential part of an measurement system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete measurement system. SI is normally used in combination with the Metric measurement system: the whole system is basically Metric with SI added, or Metric/SI. All the so-called SI distributions are really distributions of Metric/SI!

You're right though, I wouldn't risk my teeth either, just get the shit cut off already, it's not hard or expensive.
>>1100892
The other alternative is buy a -17 or even more stem if you really want to keep that steerer tube for resale or whatever. It will look only slightly more retarded
>>1100881
It clearly states that the configuration is dangerous because of the expander plug, not the steerer material.
>>1100736
Thanks anon, it's not the prettiest bike (Giant just doesn't seem to be able to make decent liveries) but it is my school colors which is cool.
>>1100847
I generally do all maintenence on my bikes myself, but a guy I trust at a LBS will cut it for $10, which is worth it to me. I'd never actually heard that spacers on top of the stem was dangerous (probably if you have 20mm or less it's fine) but I have a nice 40mm stack above mine, which can't be good.
>>1100893
Had to do this on my Tarmac as it was at least a size too big for me and the headtube was absurdly long. I'd have a hell of a time finding a -17mm stem that would be OD2 compatible.
>>1100901

It's for comfort, no different to a suspension seatpost or even a sprung seat.
I have a trial bike but haven't ridden it in a couple years and it's a bit shit. I'm always tempted to build up a decent 24/26" but I end up spending the money on my mountain bike and I already have too many bikes. I did build up a 26" dirt jump frame as a sort of trial bike (fully rigid, single speed and geared low with a front brake) and it was pretty fun, still got all the parts so guess I could give it another go.
>>1101099
Hey that doesn't look bad at all. The seat is too high, but everything else seems fine.
I was looking for a 24" bike too, but they seem to be way more expensive for some reason. I thought I would settle for a DJ too, but couldn't resist this.
>>1101112
The saddle was just that high for commuting to make it a bit more comfortable when coasting, can actually raise it a tad more and just about pedal whilst seated.
The brakes aren't great (could never be bothered to grind the rims and there's quite a bit of frame and fork flex so could do with some boosters), the rear tyre is shot and I never could get that fucker off, the freewheel needs replacing but I can't get the crank arm off as none of my sockets can reach the bolt.

It's impossible to say with any certainty what unit was intended when the poster typed 'kph', due to the utter disregard for the directions of the SI Brochure.. What we do know is that the letters 'k', 'p' and 'h' represent SI prefixes (and also a non-SI unit accepted for use with the SI, in the case of 'h') and as such they should always be used in accordance with the directions of the SI Brochure.
What came before the SI Brochure is irrelevant. The very purpose of devising the SI and promulgating via in the SI Brochure is to eliminate such ambiguities and obsolete constructions which are liable to cause misunderstanding. The Brochure makes it quite clear that improper use of SI units (and units in general when used with the SI) is not permitted.

The SI Brochure may not be law, but it is what defines the prefixes, units and unit symbols of the SI and dictates the form and style with which they must be used. The SI as defined by the most recent SI Brochure obsoletes all previous instances of the metric system promulgated by the CGPM. Thus the prefixes, units and unit symbols of the SI must only be used in accordance with the directions of the most recent SI Brochure. Otherwise, they are being misused and can not be considered to have a definite meaning. Again, I remind you that the SI Brochure stipulates that the use of the correct symbols and form thereof is mandatory - this stipulation is not qualified with an exemption for fields outside of those you specify.
