Hello
>>
>>1063611
I can't get into BMX because it's not usable as transportation for adults because the seat is too goddamn low. I try to do BMX-type stuff on my mountain bike and I occasionally take my 24" Diamondback BMX cruiser out for a spin since it is almost tolerable.
>>
>>1065051
your doing it wrong. 24" cruiser is like a dead middle point.
use the mtb for transportation and trade the cruiser for a real bmx and use that for fun- no they dont work as transportation unless your going real close like 5km max, and even in that case if you want to go fast, its not good.

bmx's are for skill fun coasting through the city. i have a mtb a road bike and a bmx,its cool to switch between them. bmx is used for close stuff and fun....also when locked someplace its almost unstealable or has no stealable parts vs mountainbike or road bike...but its real fun to go out on the bmx on a recovery day, or just going to a friends house on it when im not in a hurry and jumping through places, also can go inside houses and flats with no hassle...i know what coasters are but... the real fun of bmx is beeing close to the ground..and jumpin, jump jump jump. peace out
>>
>>1065091
24" can be used for proper bmxing tho
>>
>>1063611
Like anything bicycle-related, /sp/
>>
What is that one kind of not a BMX bike but bigger, some kind of freestyle tricking bike without the sticks on the axels and such?

It doesn't seem quite like a full sized bike either, but it has somewhat slanted geometry and a fixed gear. I wan't one of those, what are some good brands and what is that style of bike called?
>>
>>1065104
Dirt jump bike?

Canyon has one for like 600 dollars, prob the cheapest you could fin, or a second hand commencal 4x

The buy/sell section on pinkbike is good too
>>
I got myself a pretty nice used giant stp ss for 200,
fixed it a little, and now I use it for pump tracks.
It's a quite satisfying 200bux.
I love pump tracks now.
I don't do jumps because I'm a 30+yo fag and worry about injury affecting my salary. ;P

Subrosa, Haro, GT, Stolen comes to my mind, Sunday has a 24"

Just make sure it has an integrated headset and a mid BB
>>
>>1065314
none. they are novelty cruiser style bikes. you can get rigid dirt jump bikes. You will enjoy a 26" DJ bike rigid far more than those bullshit 26 "BMX".
>>
>>1065314
what you're describing is 24" not 26", it's called fixed gear freestyle or fgfs. not terribly common but you shouldn't have trouble finding one online
>>
>>1065331
Thanks dude, appreciated.
>>1065360
call me retarded, but I really wouldn't mind the extreme geometry of those dj things, because I would like the bike to be even remotely rideable, you know, like I could actually ride the thing around and not stand up all the time on it. I live in a small town and can't do any tricks for shit and don't have a car for hauling it around. The major reason for me getting something like that is actually the fixed gear, since I have never riden one, but I don't want to get a full on full sized fixie (yet) because I allready have a couple of bikes that get me around
>>1065361
thanks
>>
>>1065331
Isn't euro just a 68mm road bike bottom bracket standard?
>>
>>1065361
No. I know what FGFS is. There is a 26" BMX/Cruiser style of bikes too.

Subrosa Slayer 26" - Freewheel only
Haro Downtown 26" - Freewheel only
2017 Fairdale Taj 26" - Freewheel only

SE even makes a 29" BMX bike. Again not FGFS.

People have raced 26" BMX for decades

>>1065379
Probably, mtb euro bb are wider tho

>>1065409
Do you know the brand and model? If so just google it
Otherwise just measure width and inner and outer diameter, it is prob a standar measure
>>
>>1065366

>Guy never rode one

>extreme geometry of those dj things, because I would like the bike to be even remotely rideable

both bikes are for tricks and have to be low in the back, you are just babbling

It is even more likely that you get a decent long seatpost for a dj bike since they usually go for larger seat tube sizes that can be found also on mtbs

TL:DR I have a dj bike that I sometimes stick a 450mm post into and use it to get around town and it is just peachy
>>
>>1065409
punch those bearing races out
you get new ones with the new bb

If you don't have any special tools any big ol flat screwdriver and mallet will work
press new bb in with threaded rod and large washers + some plank orsth

or buy proper tools
or take to lbs entirely
>>
>>1065566
Forgot the step after punching the bearing races out.
Measure the internal diameter and bb width, then google it.
>>
>>1065564
>one is twice as low as the other

need some bmx help. i know this will be slow but what the hell, no where else to ask.

so i started with bmx recently.. and im old (as i see here im not the only one), i usually do road and did some mtb when younger. i just fell in love with this thing,so i bought a cheap used bike. its a 5 year old (or something) wtb reason. thats one of the most basic bikes of them.. and as its painted im not even sure the frame is the original.. costed 150 bucks. weights 11kg but my scale is not the best, could be a little more or less.

thing is im kinda stuck, bunny hops arent really getting higher and stuff.... the question is..could it be the bike? or its just that i suck?

or in other words should i get better before buying a real bike? or should i be checking some out? btw i m 5'5 and its a 20.5" frame, dont know specs of anything else on the bike..

any advice is good. thanks

Man, BMX has changed since I rode. I started on an old Haro then moved to a decent frame and fork. I, and all of my friends, ALWAYS ran brakes. I see no brakes on any of these bikes? What is this shitty trend with no brakes? Are you guys too lazy or retarded to set up a braking system? Do you want to die because you cannot stop?
>>
>>1077163
for professional riders can kinda get in the way for some tricks, and for a bike they only are using in one determined area they become useless, and other reason maybe for the more clean look "the less is more" kinda thing, since riding in bmx is considered a type of art/sport

In my experience, bunnyhops themselves are easy to learn, but increasing your height takes a little bit more time

and regarding your bike, 11 kg is absolutely reasonable for a bmx. I don't even think I have ever ridden one that light (I'm not a poorfag, I just never bothered to; I bought an haro forum and stuck with it all the years I practiced).

in the bmx world, no, they are breakless (you brake with your foot in the tire or ground).

fffuuuuuccck. I want to use it to get work and hopefully one day get the courage to ride to a park and try tricks.

I only cross 2 long streets on my way to work so I don't think it'll be a problem. Right?
>>
>>1077862
brake wont be a prob bro. i wouldnt go listening to music though. with a little practice with your foot you can quickly block the back tire.

one thing though; despite i love bmx's they suck for commuting unless the distance is short (lets say something less than 5-8km) and that youre not in a hurry.

thing is their gearing isnt for speed but for quick aceleration.. that plus the low seat (you have to pedal while standing up at the end, and no, you cant really rise the seat..or you could in some but then it sucks for tricks, a 24 cruiser could be a middlepoint )....anywayyyy, if you are used to road bikes or mtb you will feel slow on a bmx (just cause of the gear)..and its just not comfy unless youre going relaxed and jumping here and there.. then it gets fun. but you have to have some time for that.

its fun as hell though. its a totally different sensation than riding a mtb or road bike.. youre close to the ground so its cool to coast in them

I want to get into BMX Racing, I have some questions
1.- can I use a MTB bottom bracket?
2.- what are the differences between a freestyle fork and a racing fork?
3.- if I have to use a BMX euro bb, can I use MTB cranks? or is the spindle size completly different?
4.- I am a tall guy, 6'5, and I have seen a 23'' top tube racing frame, should I bother with it? what about bars, are high bars any good in racing?
5.- can freestyle rims fit the small skinny tires used in racing?
>>

>4.- I am a tall guy, 6'5, and I have seen a 23'' top tube racing frame, should I bother with it? what about bars, are high bars any good in racing?
Look up the guy called Big Boy on Youtube(Scotty Cranmer's friend), he is some pro BMX rider that is 6'4'' tall. The guy rides a 21'' frame if I remember correctly.
>>
>>1080523
I've seen him, however he mostly rides park and from I've read race bikes are usually longer

I've tried 21'' frames and my knees touch the bars all the time
>>
>>1080521
>1.- can I use a MTB bottom bracket?
"MTB bottom bracket" is not a thing, there are many different standards

>2.- what are the differences between a freestyle fork and a racing fork?
Offset, weight, construction
>3.- if I have to use a BMX euro bb, can I use MTB cranks? or is the spindle size completly different?
It's different and so is the crank spider
4.- I am a tall guy, 6'5, and I have seen a 23'' top tube racing frame, should I bother with it? what about bars, are high bars any good in racing?
23" is way too long for a 20" bike, my friend who is your height had a custom made 21.75, felt like a limo (I'm 6', ride a 21" TT, could barely ride his bike). Tiny differences on BMX frame dimensions make huge differences on how they feel, have to ride it to find out if you like it
>5.- can freestyle rims fit the small skinny tires used in racing?
Yes, if you are using clinchers and not sew ups (I don't follow racing at all, not sure if people are still using tubulars)

I meant a mtb euro bb with external bearings, like the shimano zee, a local shop has the whole assembly for cheap, much cheaper than ordering the shimano's dxr and something like an odyssey euro bb, which are bmx specific

I've seen them on some bikes, but don't know what BB they are using, I would just need to check the width and diameter or the bb right?

>It's different and so is the crank spider
alright, but if the ring is bolted to the cranks, I shouldn't have a problem right?

I had a 23'' top tube dirt jump bike and it was very comfortable, sadly there are no bmx racing guys here with 22'' frames
>>
>>1080526
The cranks may work on some frames, depends on the frame. There's a reason nobody is running MTB cranks on race bikes, you aren't going to find a secret money saving solution by doing it, just get the correct parts instead of guessing and buying things twice

>I had a 23'' top tube dirt jump bike and it was very comfortable
Apples and oranges, DJs have nothing to do with BMX race bikes. There have been plenty of people your height that have raced, almost always on 21s. Why don't you go ask around at your local track?

Not to knock you, but why are posts like this such a common occurrence?

>hey guys, don't know anything about x, but I've determined I'm unique and for some special reason that only applies to me and I'm going to go about it in a special way, and repeatedly ask "why not" when people tell me why it's a bad idea.

BMX race bikes have changed very little in decades, safe to say they have them pretty well figured out.

b-because there is no local track, im building a pumptrack and hope that the local street and park boys join and make some dirt jumps and maybe turn the pump track into a proper bmx track

also, I used zees in the past and I like them, should I message the manufacturer and see if they know if the zee assembly will fit?
>>
>>1080537
>also, I used zees in the past and I like them
You used them on an MTB, this is for a BMX bike. I have 165 Race Face Atlas cranks on my MTB and like them, but they would be shit on a BMX. At 6'5 you probably are going to want 180mm cranks or even 182.5mm for BMX, which doesn't exist for Zees. Consider this for frame size, a child will ride an 18" TT, a 5'3 rider will ride a 20" tt, and a 6'0 rider a 21" TT. The difference you are proposing for 5" of height difference is greater than the difference between an under 5' persons bike and a 6' persons bike. Find some tall people online and look at their setups (you'll find 21.25 or 21.5 TT at most, 180mm cranks most of the time). People have already figured all of this out. Or you can be that beginner guy that figured it all out by himself with some ridiculous, barely rideable setup, believe me you would not be the first.
>>
>>1080541
>but they would be shit on a BMX
how? dxrs are the same as zees, they both come in 68mm width, what I cannot find is the chainline, apparently it is slightly different, but i am still trying to fugure out how to measure that some people ride zees and saints, I've seen it online, and they don't look newbie at all

I gues 180mm+ cranks would be fantastic, didn't know they existed, but do they really justify the $300 price different between zees and dxrs?

also, I am considering mtb cranks since mtb external euro bb are way stronger than internal cups, the only external euro bmx bb I can find is profile and I'd be paying 4 times the price if I order it from dan's comp compared to getting a saint bb from a local shop

I am not doing this to be a special snowflake, but to avoid paying almost 4 times for the whole drivetrain
>>
>>1080544
ok so I google some more and found the following info:

the chainline in Shimano DXRs is 44 mm, the chainline for the ZEE's is 50.4mm, if both the DXR bb and the bb52 bb (which comes with the ZEE's) are 68mm in width, I could technically run them and the centerline of my chain would only be 4.4 mm off set right?

pls respond

How the hell can you not hop up at least one to two feet on your bike? Pull the front end up off the ground for a second, see how easy that was? Now pull the front end off the ground hard as fuck and jump off the pedals and land behind the bike, see how easy that was? Now do the same shit except hop yourself up after you pull the front end up. If you can't do that, you might want to look into video gaming or something.
>>
>>1082941
>Now pull the front end off the ground hard as fuck and jump off the pedals and land behind the bike

Yeah no, maybe if you're teaching them to bail, otherwise that's useless and wouldn't teach a new rider anything.

Proper hopping is done by keeping the pedals level horizontally, bending the knees, then pulling back hard to raise the front, extending the arms outward straight and using the angle of your feet to level out and raise the back end, it isn't hard to explain to new riders without being a dick about it.
>>

What bike would you recommend for an adult who is looking for something to cheap to mess around on ? I skateboarded my whole life but I am pretty much over it and really want a BMX bike. I assume its the same deal as skateboards where there are super booty bikes in the big box stores and you need to go specialty ? The thing is I am not trying to spend $500 on some cool *core* brand bike. How much would I need to spend for a 20 inch or larger bike that isn't poo poo quality ?
>>

$500+ . Buying a $250- $350 brand name complete is basically just you paying for a flimsy brick with wheels and a fancy sticker on it. Do it right or be disappointed
>>
>>1087667
Are your hubs male or female? This will determine what pegs you can use. Personally I've only ever used metal pegs, but that's because I mostly ride street and the only parks I go to are concrete and I'm not that worried about damaging the ramps. If you ride a lot of wooden parks go with plastic.

Currently I've got some old metals ones that some kid brought in to replace with plastic ones at the shop because he kept hurting himself on them.

Honestly when i was riding all the time and wanted to do something or a trick. I would just practice and try it on smaller stuff first. There was this ledge i found that was about bar height and i really wanted to smith it. So i started hopping up every ledge i found for like 2 months till i could smith that ledge.

Same thing with manuals. I used to be upset cause a few friends could manual forever. So i went out to a long empty lot and started doing manuals. 10 feet, then 15, then 30, then 100. Then i added a stick to hop over at the end, then i added a skateboard, then i started doing them into grinds. By the time i was done i could manual a football field into a grind.

Mostly just set a goal and practice it, like anything else you want to do in life. Old picture i took of Morgan Long from the last time i was riding in cali.

hey there, im another dude, and ive seen a bunch of bunny hop tutorials on youtube.. ive made progress but i think im fucking it with hte weightbalance and stuff.. i dont really pop the front wheel so much cause f it (i think)....anyways, d you have any advice regarding on the position of your body when doing the hop? like how do you think you do it? do you have any programmed "motion" like the one you described with arms and front wheel but with the body weight distribution? and also when do you straight yourself up? from the begining ,after the pull? thanks!

>>
>>1096522
This. The geometry is just weird (in a good way) and pegs are a lot of fun once you get the bike off the ground.
It only took me two 15 minute sessions on separate days to bunnyhop, where as with MTB it's been six years and I can only do the english bunny hop.

I dont think its that complex
Weight back when popping the front wheel off
Swinging some weight (not all to the front ofc, use logic) to front to get the back wheel off
Or?

Hey guys, I've been getting /fit/, trying different sports, riding scooters and horses and stuff. Always wanted to try out BMX/skateboard,
but I'm a bit concerned that I'm yet to have an OK weight for that. 95kg atm 1.80 meters height
Should I give it a go or stick with general cruising for now? How many bunnyhopps can I do before the bike gets pulverized?

go for it, if you break parts of your bike you replace them with better parts. in the bmx world "better parts" mean that they resist more abuse.

google some vids of broc raiford, he's 200lbs 6"1' and does brutal shiet, there as to be some bike checks of his ride also, but you just need a big frame, something like 21.25" , you will be ok

bikes lose their value insanely fast. Especially BMX. Its probably real, but just look for obvious signs of scam. Thats 3 model years old now, they need to liquadate so they can slang their newer inventory at a higher profit margin. The longer something sits the more money you lose on it from a business standpoint.

My friend just got a bmx, but it has no brakes at all. Apparently the 'pros' run no brakes, but we both agree that it's fucking crazy.

So what should I know about bmx brakes when buying the parts? I did a bit of reseach and it seems that:
>the brake mounts/bosses are above the rim surface, a v-brake wouldn't fit, so I guess I need a u-brake
>u-brake needs a different cable pull, so the usualm mtb levers won't work

80's, 90's, and modern representations of gear in BMX done by Bob Haro. He was both a great drawer and rider, so I can totally imagine being a kid back in the 80s getting stoked after seeing his work in a magazine.

>>1100318
It's entirely possible if you're not going too far of a distance. If you're looking to commute with a bike using BMX style geometry I'd suggest looking at the 24 or 26 inch size "cruiser" styles. Modern setups can be a little pricey, though. But, If you keep your eyes open on craigslist, or whichever buying and selling phone app is popular right now, you might be able to find some cheaper ones from the early/mid 90s. Even comfier if they have a laid-back seatpost.

You may never be a world competitor, but fuck the haters. I'm 37 (I used to ride, jump around and 'try' tricks when I was a kid, and I had a blast), and I just bought a Kink Liberty bike.

I've been having such a fun time. I tell you. I have kids (that I got bikes for), so they're my "excuse" [I go out and ride around with them].

But, damn - I'm having so much fun. I've wipe out three to five times every time I ride (screwing around with new tricks), but even getting my ass kicked and getting back up is a good time. I swear- riding the BMX bike that I always would have wanted as a kid has made me feel so much younger.

You do you. My new BMX bike has made me very happy. Sure- I probably look weird or pathetic. Fuck 'em- I have a great job, awesome kids, a killer wife, and I can do whatever the fuck I want, because I live in America. Life is good, man. If you want a bike, just get a fuckin' bike! Life is too short to take the chance that you might regret it later.

40 is the new 20- do it! You won't regret it.

tl;dr: I'm a middle aged BMXfag having fun, and I clearly don't have enough shame or self-awareness.
>>
>>1077163
You can still get brakes. Your choice.

Without brakes, if you're skilled, you can side stop, like a skiier, or you can foot stop yourself, wither by putting your foot on the front or the back tire as you ride, if you are flyin', and you really need to stop right meow.

>>1085055
Clearly kids' bikes are all you have if you are so compelled to be such a dickface.

i dont really plan to do much tricking and mainly going to use one for commuting so I got a hi-ten frame for < $300 with good parts. pic related its on clearance right now.

it just arrived today and im blown away. Pedaling while standing isn't as bad as I thought it would be, even going uphill was much easier to do than my heavy mtb. Im literally flying on this thing.

>>1106901
Im an old fag as well and i regret not getting a bmx sooner. They are more agile and sturdier than any old bike with gears and are perfect for commuting.
