I used to take the subway to work. Every single one reeks of homeless piss. It's especially bad when it rains. There's an underground concourse on broad that usually had homeless people sleeping in it. Dimly lit, cyberpunk nightmare vibe.

Continuing that vibe is the "under the El" section in kensington. Documented:

http://www.phlmetropolis.com/2011/01/welcome-to-zombieland.php

The buses are often late. The drivers usually seem like they hate you. They are humid and there is usually trash on the ground.

The subway cars usually have trash in them as well. Fried chicken bones and discarded fast food wrappers. I've watched McDonalds employees rolling blunts in the morning. Regularly saw passed-out junkies and wasted zombie people on my way home from work.

If you ride the subway after 8pm on a weekend there is a good chance of being harassed by black young men. Teens to early 20s. Usually there are 6 or more of them, clearly violent, and the entire car ignores them while they ask women standing at the end of the car "you ever take it up the ass girl?" and shit like that

Kids graffiti the inside of the cars while you are riding home from work. One guy was beaten with hammers.

The regional rail lines are generally good, but the Market Frankfurt junction is usually full of scumbags and homeless people. When using the restroom, stalls are usually occupied by bums. And one sink being used as a bath. The bathroom will smell like bum, which is worse than shit smell.

The regional rail cars are usually a little late, but they are at least clean. The keep them that way to suburb commuters and tourists. The general SEPTA experience is clearly bad though.

Oh yeah, tokens. You had to carry around fucking tokens to ride up until recently, which was insane. The machines were often broken.

I would regularly walk 3 miles home just to take a break from the subway nightmare and get some air.

Hey /n/, I want to find employment for a rail company preferably as a conductor. Is this possible with only a high school diploma? I'm more than willing to work long hours and be away from home for any amount of time. CSX and NS are the two companies in my area so how would I go about getting employed by one of them?

>I want to find employment for a rail company preferably as a conductor.
No you don't. Go to college, study hard, apply yourself, and never think again about working for this shit hole.
>>
>>1079104
What are some of your grievances with the rail industry?
>>
>>1079113
The hours, extra-board life being absolute dog shit, the growing management core that has no railroad experience, the inherent danger and risk in just about everything you do, the fact that this is the only job I've ever had where if you're good at your job you basically get punished by having more expected from you. They then will burn you by saying "you didn't check those points while you were lining it back and forth 15 times kicking cars," and write you up. Just stupid petty shit that every job has, but on the railroad it feels like it's cranked up to 11. Like I said, go to college, study hard, and get a good job.

Call the police on these faggots. This is damaging property, you might get a ride home out of it.

The trick is not to ask the officer for a ride, ask if he can call a cab for you.

>havent had the time to ride like I really want to lately... like most of the year so far only like 400 miles
>3 day weekend yay, I promise myself to do a metric century
>been raining all week and saturday too but today is supposed to be nice
>get 3 miles in, bike path is flooded, no worries I will just ride around it
>3 mile detour but not upset
>going slightly down hill, pinch flat on a really tiny pothole
>stop in front of this house
>getting patch on, more or less the last of my glue
>patch wont hold, fuck, missed a tiny little bit and its leaking
>god damn unfriendly dog thinks I'm a bad guy and starts barking at me
>ok fuck it go to one of my back up tubes, a shitty walmart tube
>cant get a good seal on it to pump it up worth a shit, will just end up riding on the rim
>this dog just wont chill out
>ok fuck it go to my last resort tube
>hmm the walmart tube seems to have messed up my pump and cant get a decent seal on this one either
>coal rolled while fucking with this one
>lady asks me to get away from her house
>finally get to maybe 80psi where I really need more like 105
>decide I am going to continue my ride anyways
>get to where the trail is again, its under 3 ft of water
>ok I know when I am defeated
>turn around and start going home
>3 miles away and get a thorn in my tire
>I can see it so I am trying not to pull it out and squeeze as much distance as possible
>nope
>end up walking like 2.5 miles back
>almost home, like 2 blocks away someone finally offers help

So instead I mowed my lawn and then went and bought new tubes, liners, and slime.

Sorry about your day, but explain this shit. Are you seriously rectally reamed over having to pay income taxes? If so, welcome to adulthood and public services. You're welcome.

I know this may sound dumb but I'm bad at obvious shit like this

2 different journeys to work
1 is 6 miles (takes usually around 20 minutes)
1 is 4 miles (takes about 22 minutes)
So the 6 miles one can end up taking less time because it goes over a nice stretch of motorway

Does it mean I am using less fuel because of the shorter-by-time journey?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Fuel is mostly used pushing air out of the way as you move forward (when you're not accelerating). As you go faster you use more fuel as you're pushing more air.

So if you go faster, you use more fuel even though you spend less time using the fuel.

Let me guess, if all the space wasted on tracks and bike paths was instead used for more highways there would be less (no) congestion?
And that's a pretty weird looking internet address, OP.

Why people hate WD40 as a lubricant for the chain ?

Because chain lubricant is the best product for the application.

wd40 is more of a flushing tool to remove particulate or used as a fogger for prepping of long term motor storage.

Considering buying an electric skateboard/longboard. They are cheaper than electric bikes and generally fulfill the same purpose in terms of transportation. Does anyone here have one that could share their experience?

I've tried both the 2nd Gen Boosted (Dual model) and the Evolve Bamboo GT.

I think the Boosted is the better overall product. The deck is better and more flexible which wakes it more comfortable to ride. The parts are more easily user-maintained and user-replaceable, including a swappable battery. I also think the remote is better.

To me, the only advantage of the Evolve is range, ~21 miles compared to the ~12 miles on the Boosted with an extended range battery. The difference is that on the Boosted, you can just carry and extra battery and outrange the Evolve (which you can't quick-swap the battery on) that way.

Don't get me wrong, both are good products. But unless range on a single battery with a single charge is a trump card for you, I'd recommend the Boosted Gen 2 (dual or dual+).
>>
>>1082893

A friend of mine bought a Boosted board and used it to commute for about a month before he fell back on bus/light rail/zipcars.

They are toys, not transportation. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but you need to understand what you are getting in to is not a viable long or even short-term way of moving around a city.

It is theoretically possible to give the northern Chicago suburbs a direct, one-seat rail connection to O'Hare International Airport. The best part of this is that it would run almost entirely over disused, former railroad rights-of-way that have not (yet) been developed.

From a northern terminal in the Lake-Cook Road region, the rail line would travel south, over the abandoned Skokie Valley Route of the CNS&M to the Dempster-Skokie area. From there, the rail line would continue south over the abandoned Skokie-Weber-Mayfair Line of the C&NW. At Mayfair, a connection would be built to the CTA Blue Line where it continues on to O'Hare in the Median of the Kennedy Expressway.

I do not really believe this is economically or politically feasible, at least within my lifetime, so consider it the autistic foamer equivalent of fan-fiction.
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1080842
Do you think it could be a new CTA line, or something else?
>>
>>1080844
I think it would require a degree of city & suburban intra-agency cooperation (CTA & Metra/RTA) that makes this proposal even less feasible, politically.
>>
Connecting Skokie to the Blue Line is being done as part of the Mid-City Transitway, and CTA has actually had plans to extend the Yellow Line out to Lake Cook Road for a very long time.

Has anyone ever taken the greyhound bus from PA to FL? What's it like? I'm not sure if I want to subject myself to 20 hours on a bus.

I've done WV to GA. Lots of stops in the middle of nowhere. Little rest stop areas with one shitty gas station and a mcd's. Layover in Charlotte sucks. If you're lucky you'll get a bus full of military guys who just quietly talk amongst themselves. Worst case scenario you get a bunch of fat poor middle aged women who snore/ spill soda all over themselves/ get in fights with the driver/ keep begging to use your cell phone.

Why not just take the train? Philadelphia to Miami is only $120, even though it's 5 hours longer. You'll be able to get up and walk around, visit the dining car, the lounge, free wifi, and possibly get a bed with that.
>>
>>1080586
I'd rather walk. I've been by bus and will never do it again.

I've just moved to the downtown area of my city and am interested in owning a bike to keep the miles off my car. Can anyone tell me how much it costs to maintain a bike each month?
20 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1080281
Litertally nothing unless you're getting daily punctures. At most you'll need an extra tube, maybe a small pump incase you get a puncture on the road and some degreaser and lube to clean your drive train when it gets nasty. Everything listed can be had for no more than $50 and it will last you quite some time.
>>
Most of the cost of maintaining a bike is upfront in tools, lubricants, degreaser, spare tube, pump and stuff to wash it with.
Clean your drivetrain now and then and keep it lubed and that's most of the maintenance you'll have to do.

You may want to get more durable tyres. They'll be more puncture resistant.
>>
>>1080281
>clean and oil chain
>sprocket(s)/chainring(s) teeth still good?
>brake pads
>tires/tubes
>derailleur calibration
>wheel true to circle
Cost nothing to maintain a bike compared to a car. Real issue in cost will be in food and meeting your increased caloric intake...

I never got why so many people buy those 149$ helmets when my 15$ helmet has same ventilation/weight/impact resistance.

Pic related
37 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1079816
You're right about impact resistance but more expensive helmets are more lightweight and better ventilated 99% of the time.
>>
The inlays in cheap helmets are usually 3 strips of foam held by velcro stickers that unstick after 3 washings and the straps are often impossible to adjust to be comfortable.
Not saying all of them are like that or that there aren't expensive ones that do that, but it's the general rule.
>>
>>1079829

"threaded bottom bracket, alright!"

https://youtu.be/A4wAeTk4wAU

In 2011 anyone with a threaded bottom bracket had a frame worth of being scrapped....

In 2017 the same people are now saying it's a luxury feature on luxury bikes?

I thought they said it was trash......

I also thought GCN suggest against steel road bikes period, doesn't matter if it was high end Reynolds cromoly

Sounds like they make up whatever the new hot shit is every 5 years.

What's next 7005 aluminum bikes they claimed that were trash in 2014 being the next cutting edge technology?
25 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I often wonder this, in all honesty they should make your de France self-supported. At least then the bikes they are calling cutting edge actually need to be able to survive the distance and will be more robust. "Cutting edge" in cycling just means 'racer' nowadays. What happened to solid durable bikes to last you a lifetime?
>>
>>1076753
Still widely available everywhere. Not all bikes are similar. If you're looking for race bikes don't be surprised that they can't take your touring gear. And don't be surprised if the touring bike feels heavy and sluggish compared to a race bike.

A lot of people want cutting edge race bike because they're fun to ride. They're light, agile and snappy. They go fast. Are there bikes out there that offer better everyday usability? Absolutely, however they aren't nearly as much fun to ride.

>race bikes can't survive the distance
'no'
>>
>>1076754
Gcn talks about race bikes road cyclocross etc

But race bikes or bikes that are raced or sportive in some manner.

So they bounce back and forth between promoting technologies and are largely inconsistent and what the "best" is at any given moment and will absolutely contradict whatever they had said in a few short years

Seemingly on who they happen to be promoting at any given moment
