How important is bicycle weight?
I am looking at getting a hybrid for commuting, is a few pounds here or there really going to make much difference outside of racing?
The gearing matters a lot
The tires matter a lot
The total weight of everything (including you) matters somewhat
The weight distribution (especially heavy ass wheels) matters somewhat less
The actual weight of the frame matters very little
>>1076943
You're not racing, so no, it really doesn't matter that much. Even if your commute route is hilly in both directions it only matters a tiny bit because you don't really care if it takes you an extra minute or two. Besides which if you're commuting you're likely to be carrying a bunch of stuff with you and that'll weigh you down even more. Don't bother paying for light weight, pay for sturdiness and the ability to carry all the shit you're going to carry with you.

DON'T BUY A 'HYBRID'.
>>1076943
Riding a hybrid bike isn't fun at all.
Don't believe me?
Go to Ikea, they have a 365 day satisfaction guarantee
If you ride that bike more than 45 miles I'd be surprised it's the least interesting shit ever
That's definitely the word for what that thing that's out of service is called.

What are these things called again? I was thinking elevators but thats different.
>>1084505
Escalator. Because things escalate with them.

Why is Public Transportation so terrible in America?
Why will a city and its suburbs be governed by several different municipalities and councils, with no unified transit policy or system in sight instead each following their own little ideas in their little political fiefdom?
And where the hell is the HSR?
>>1084268
Some people literally think it's Communism.
Public transport was consciously gutted by the influence of the automotive industry. The heavy car infrastructure isn't something that 'arose naturally', it's by design.
wow
o o
wow
Public transportation is terrible almost anywhere.
In Ontario on some of our freeways we have what are called "HOV lanes" high occupancy vehicle lanes, which require vehicles to have multiple people in them to use. The idea is to encourage carpooling or at least reward carpooling. As you can see from the picture during rush hour the lanes carry much less traffic.
Now sure this has benefits and I take advantage of them when I can but wouldn't just widening the highway an extra lane help everybody?
Do they do something similar with highway lanes where you're from? Thoughts on it?
HOV Lanes are great. Less of an induced demand effect, and great for providing a cycle land buffer because 99% of cagers won't use it.
>>1081776
>cycle land buffer because 99% of cagers won't use it.
Cycling on the freeway is illegal here, but we do have extensive intercity bike paths in southern Ontario
>>1081776
HOV lanes are only on controlled acess highways. You're not riding a bike on them anyways, retard.
I'm thinking about becoming an air traffic controller but I heard that the job market isn't looking good for it.
>>1081456
Trump privatized it, you don't pay attention?
Means there are going to be a ton of lay-offs from salaried gov positions and a hiring freeze and furloughs throughout
>>1081464
If people are being laid off then doesn't that increase my chances of getting accepted?
>>1081464
did he change that shit where good pilots were being rejected because of racial quotas?
>yfw you forget to lube your brake pads so they get squeaky
Anyone else ever forget to lube their brake pads?
I had a squeaky brake pad yesterday. Turned out it was from a piece of gravel that had flung up from my tyres and landed on my brakepad and contacted my tyre every time I applied the brakes. It came from a freshly resurfaced road so the tar was still wet when it landed.
Glad my bike isn't expensive since it has small flecks of tar on the frame from the wheels.
>>1084222
I always lube my brake pads before and after downhill runs. It still doesn't work though because the wheel gets stuck and quits moving when I apply the brakes. Not sure what is out of adjustment here.
>>1084222
Is this supposed to be bait?
FWIW to anyone who doesn't know better:
Noisy rim brakes are usually caused by a condition called 'glazing'; the rubber compound of the brake pads gets a slick, shiny appearance to them, and/or the braking surface of the rim gets contaminated. The way to remedy the problem is to clean the rim thoroughly, so it's clean, bare metal again, and to rough up the brake pads with something like coarse sandpaper or a fairly coarse file, so they're not shiny anymore. Also use the blade of a screwdriver or a knifeblade to clean out any debris in the vertical grooves in the pads. While you're at it, make sure the brakes are centered and otherwise adjusted properly.
>the moar you know! xD
What is the best track bike for around $1000 mark (or less)? Saw one of these next to the street locked up and it looked sick.
The fad is over, son

fixies are going the way of the fidget spinner
but they were always about getting a free / cheap bike / frame - stripping it down - getting some nice wheels - making your own colour
palette work and building it yourself and then going fast
that wont die, but buying them prefabbed and asking for respect...., long gone buddy-o

Vittoria was a good choice but choosing their lowest tire is disgusting. Should've came with Corsas... Rubinos at the very least...

This is from Port Aventura amusement park in Catalonia. The train is a replica of 19th century american rolling stock.
This locomotive here at the Busch Garden Railway.
Yet I don't think it's a theme park.
Anyway OP, where is this train in your photo?
Also that locomotive looks very British.
>>1082988
not op but that train is a diesel made in Alcester in the UK in 1998, its at some disney theme park

kek this nigga bought a frame without fork
>>1081145
My legs are my fork

The store forgot the fucking fork and the headset in the post, its coming tomorrow.
Not that its super important i've got plenty of forks. but regardless im using the ones that are coming
>be riding on cycle paths/MUPs
>riding ~20mph, twice as fast as all the casuals
>the ones riding with friends are all annoying cunts and ride side by side taking up almost the entire trail
>every time I pass them, I don't announce my pass or slow down or anything, I just pass them at 2x their speed on the narrow margin on their left side where there's barely room
>they often freak out (due to being startled/surprised), sometimes even scream
>occasionally get mad at me for not announcing my pass
>tfw just waiting for someone to get startled badly enough that it will cause them to crash
>tfw I'll lol more than I have ever lol'd in my life
Who else feels these feels?
>inb4 butthurt slowfags get mad at me
You look like a tool. Ride on the road if you want to go this fast.
Also,

>not a casual

umad?
>>1076720
You can't go fast on roads, too many cars to slow you down.
If I got a fat bike and filled the tires with helium, would the bike overall be lighter?
Yes.
Not significantly though. We're talking a few hundred grams.
I'm a little fuzzy on how gas and density works
but wouldn't it weight the same as normal because you just end up having to compress more helium into the tires to reach the same PSI?
>>1082620
>but wouldn't it weight the same as normal because you just end up having to compress more helium into the tires to reach the same PSI?
No. Helium, under the same pressure as air, has lower density. That's why balloons rise. That's the point.
How many days a week do you go indoor bouldering to supplement with your cycling?
I've just been going on weekends but am going to try every morning before work too.
>>1082518
2.
I think daily would be overtraining and potentially injurious. Bouldering can be pretty hard on your body.
I shoot for 2 days at the climbing gym, 3 days riding, 1 day lifting, 1 day stretching.
why is bouldering a good sport to complement cycling? thanks, real question, i just dont know and im curious about it
>>1082518
>How many days a week do you go indoor bouldering
not BJJ?
both are good for overall strenght and therefore injury prevention but BJJ technniques are ground based and therefore better to for learning how to fall etc.
Why do people not want front derailleurs anymore?
don't understand too, I ride 1x10 for two year now (Zee) with only addition - 36T NW chainring, never dropped chain, not that bad for climbs too, no maintenance at front
Probably because most people don't really know which gear combinations to use for a comfortable ride, overlapping gears are confusing, and having two shifters makes your bike look cluttered. It's way more intuitive to just have 7 gears that don't overlap.
because cassettes are now fuck huge and you can retrofit expander cogs easily on 10 speeds.
