Trying to decide on which motor kit to go with. I plan on commuting to work which is about 10km mostly across bike paths/trails with gentle slopes. Don't plan on going faster than 20mph which is the legal limit here.

I think I'm settled on a lunacycle shark pack and am leaning towards a rear geared hub around 350-500w (maybe Bafang bpm). Does anyone have experience with a motor they really like?

E. None of the above.
Bicycle motors are a waste of time. Just get a scooter or actual moped.

Is there a reason you care about it being electric?

Why not just get an old fashioned moped with pedals?

Bike to work:
1 mile on neighborhood streets
3 miles on fast arterial roads (downhill)
final 5 miles through quiet, grid-layout pre-war neighborhoods and downtown (pic related, it's very pleasant)

Bike back home:
8-9 miles on a less-busy main/arterial road that gently gains elevation
Last 1-2 miles either a MUP or an easy singletrack trail or another moderately busy road, depending on stops I need to make

Starting off with a technique question:
I'm not a natural climber and I've been putting work into my climbing technique lately to try and improve.
when I get to a high enough grade that I have to stand, I try to get into an upright stance with a relaxed body and so i can open my chest and breathe better; It feels like I'm putting too much weight on the bars though as I swerve around a bit when my cadence drops.
Any advice?

And yet it can still survive a while after the bump limit, cuntface.

You swerve because you are putting too much weight on the bars to control it with your shit arms. Instead of trying to stand straight up to do your stupid yoga breathing exercise and leaning on the handlebars so you can "relax", you use your muscles instead to keep your upper body from flopping about so you can put power out

I get mine off eBay. I've got a few pairs of these ones specifically:

Pros: cheap
Cons: maybe not as good as super expensive $100+ ones? I dunno, I've never even tried a pair of more expensive ones. I have some dhb ones from Wiggle that were more than these but don't seem any better.

Wow, way to be a sexist pig! They are all extremely beautiful in their own way, which is why they are catcalled because men catcall any female that is attractive, so by saying that they couldn't really be catcalled is extremely insulting and offensive, but people shouldn't be catcalling anybody anyway because it's objectifying and disrespectful.

Why does /n/ hate the fixed gear bike so much? I get why you hate some riders but people that take fixed gear as hobbies aren't that bad, most of them are the coolest people I've met. I get why no brakes is a concern to most.
Give me a good reason why the fixed gear is bad other than you have insufficient knee power. The brand that fixed gears are under are questionable but the bike is still fun to ride. If you haven't give a fixed gear bike a try, do so. You might like it. They're also the king for training and conditioning.

Fixed gear bikes?
Are those bikes these kind of bikes where you cant shift gears?
But why no brakes? o.O
Well as far as i see, the only benefit is that the pedaling power has the minimum loss of energy(hub gear has mostly more than derailleur gear)
No brakes = i rather run across a speedway blind than riding this.
>>
At least in my case, I dislike fixiefags because they're assholes on the road. They disregard every rule, ride against traffic, smash mirrors and scratch cars, plus they can't stop in time in emergency situations (brakelessfags). They just give cyclists a bad rep.

Of course I'm generalizing, but most fixiefags I've met meet that criteria.

Recent immigrants are some of the worst, most angry cagers out there, in my experience. It's because cage ownership, much like large television ownership, and wearing Levi's jeans, and having the latest Bob Dylan cassette tapes, represents an outward signal of Real American Success to members of their community, and they are very self-important about it.

The other really bad group is blue collar workers. They're mad at anyone who has a white collar job and makes a special point to use a method of transportation involving physical exertion. But they're not as violent about it, they yell sometimes and honk a lot, but they don't do dangerous maneuvers like the first-generation immigrants who think they're still in their lawless ancestral homeland as they flaunt their 3,500 pound American Dream.

Anyway my day was fine. I am working remote today due to some meetings in another time zone, and had no compelling reason to get on my bike. Feeling a little "caged" from being indoors, though.

I am wanting to do my 1st century in about 11 weeks, The Denver Century Ride if anyone else is going.

I would appreciate any tips to help me out, I know for a fact I will struggle with the climbing.

Also the most I have ever ridden before was 75 miles with about 4000ft of climbing. That was last summer and I think the last 10-15 miles were really rough. I stopped at gas stations to get grub. This will be 103 miles with about 6000+ft and probably some sort of support station every 25 miles or so.

How can I prepare and what are some things I should bring to help my endurance? I think I have heard of energy pastes or liquids you can drink, normally I just have a 5 hour energy and water with an apple or banana or some jerky when I go on longer rides. I would like to finish strong on this ride.

Should I switch my gearing from 53-39 to 50-34 to help me with the hills?

I plan to pick up my riding for the weeks leading up to it with 20+miles 3-4 times a week after work and 50-80's on the weekends and a short recovery ride on sundays. I will ramp up to this in the next few weeks and then back off around week 8-9, pick back up for week 10 and then rest with 10 mile rides the week before.

Any other tips are accepted, so yeah I'm a noob.

Why do people ride a 53-39 in the first place?

Do you spin out with your 50-11 gearing?
>>
>>939855
>Why do people ride a 53-39 in the first place?
Because 13-25 is a tighter grouping than 11-23. Because there is insufficient overlap on a compact chainset, leading to too many front shifts in some terrain. Because 39t gives you more usable cassette range in most normal terrain, where many gears would be too light to use on a compact.

On the high end 50→5[3,2] is only a 5% increase in gearing, so that's quite obviously not the reason, anon.
You'll note that the new groupsets are gravitating away from 50/34 in favour of 50/36, or even 53/42. Compact everywhere for everyone was just a trend phase.
>>
>>939858
>Because 13-25 is a tighter grouping than 11-23.

Enough reason alone. Altho 53-13 is lower then 50-11

>Because there is insufficient overlap on a compact chainset, leading to too many front shifts in some terrain.

Then you have your drivetrain set up incorrectly. More specifically, your small ring is too big.

>Because 39t gives you more usable cassette range in most normal terrain, where many gears would be too light to use on a compact.

By whose standard? If you use your small for more then 5% of your riding, or for anything else then climbing, then you failed at using a bike.

Has anyone here owned a Diamond Back Topanga? I bought this one for 40€, in fairly good shape. As far as I know all the frame is chromoly except for the rear triangle.

I'll be putting on it some new Shimano cantis, Schwalbe Marathon tires and a road handlebar with new stem and brake levers. I will do some light touring on it (no panniers) during spring and summer, while keeping it as a commuter for the rest of the year.

It currently has a 3x7 groupset and basic, single-wall rims. If I go on any long tours I will probably build a new wheelset with Novatec hubs and ZTR rims, as well as upgrading the groupset to 3x9, probably with downtube indexed shifters. Does this sound as a good idea?

>Does this general have a pasta?
Nope, but you could take a shot at making some.

I guess I have a question, has anyone here ever refinished a carbon crankset? I may be getting some Red cranks that are scuffed up, I've had one suggestion that they can be cleaned up by sanding clean then respraying with clearcoat - does that sound like BS or has anyone here tried it?

Pic tangentially related, if this arm hadn't failed I wouldn't be looking to swap cranks around on my fleet.

>>937768
Yep, you're on the right track, that'd make a fine bike for light touring with a better wheelset. I wouldn't recommend going to dt shifters on that bike though, you'd have to rig up new cable stops to do it and odds are the geometry of that frame isn't going to make them easy to reach in any case.
>>
What makes a "good" groupset? How does an ultra so better than say, a 105? Is it Mainly weight ?
