I recently acquired this highly collectible bike. Do you guys know how rare it is or how sought-after? How jealous will other cyclists be when they find out that I have it? It's the first ever bike with suspension.

What's the deal with the countries without metros? I'm surprised Yugoslavia and Cuba never bothered while most of the commies did; and the USSR never bothered putting metro rail in the Baltics.

Also the Antipodean countries.
>>
>muh metro

The obsession with metro systems is typical for former USSR countries and its satellites. Are you from there by any chance?

To put it right: perfectly working tram or light rail or commuter rail system can do the same work as the typical "heavy" metro.
>>

>USSR countries and its satellites
>Most of NATO has metros on many of their cities
>On-surface railed transport system is better than underground rails.

You know, the "obsession" with metro systems is there because they are much more efficient, don't clog roads (as tram lines do), and have much bigger units which can carry far more people.

Commuter rail systems do the same above-ground, and that makes them shittier (intersections with streets clog traffic).

Believe me, I live in a city which has all of those transport systems (tram, light rail, commuter trains, underground metro AND bus rapid transit systems) - Buenos Aires. Even taking into account that all of them are poorly-administered, you can tell by far that underground metro has many advantages over the other systems.

Here's my old fashioned bike, I had it out for a ride this morning actually. It's not the fastest bike I own by any means, but it's a fun ride and always puts a smile on my face.

I actually enjoy riding with the dt shifters once in a while because they force me to think deliberately about when or whether I shift gears, as opposed to powering/spinning through something. I don't have a power meter to test this, but my assumption (based on feel and average speed numbers) is that the focus and self-awareness from doing this kind of practice improves how effectively I manage effort when I get back on a more modern bike with integrated shifters.

I'm thinking about investing in a brompton, does anyone here have one that can offer any insight?

I run a paratrooper. I do a lot of loaded touring, and my body weight alone is about 200. If I wanted something more compact I'd probably go with Bike Friday since they seem to be a much better deal for what you pay.
>>
>>951215
Don't bike Friday's fold a lot slower?
>>
>>951219

Kinda-sorta, but they've also got a significantly higher weight capacity than most folders. Bromptons (the ones I've seen at least) seemed pretty delicate by comparison.

When does it make sense to buy a carbon road bike?

I ride simply for enjoyment. I'm extremely fit, so riding bike doesn't have any real training effect on me. I just like the feeling and the freedom to escape from home for an hour or so.

I was offered a frame I really like (pic related) and would have to build it up, which means investing in drivetrain etc. I don't have a lot of money, so I'm thinking if this would make sense, or if I should just stay with my old steel bike? What speaks for/against it?

When you can afford it and you can enjoy it. There's no magical performance threshold where carbon starts making a difference.
>>
You wont notice any difference unless you are doing a shitload of climbing or are autistic about stiffness. If you're only riding for an hour tops each ride you could literally ride almost anything and still find it enjoyable.

If you want a new frame just get aluminum and save some money. That way if you ever go to snap city you wont have to break the bank for a new frame if you fuck up really bad.
>>
>>953867

I don't think carbon is for you. Carbon is better for people who race competitively.

The older I get, the less I want any carbon on my bikes at all. It was fun when I was young and didn't worry about death or bicycle maintenance.

Now I look back and think about how many times I crashed my cannondale Slice fork riding drunk and wonder wtf I was thinking riding that bike between city buses going 40 mph and all that stupid shit

Carbon is for guys who really race competitively. It is not for people riding for simple pleasure and exercise. It's not for touring, it's not for commuting. No, no, no. The bike companies pushing carbon on consumer-grade bikes are morally culpable for the deaths and injuries that will result when all of these bikes are 30 years old

This. Add to this being friendly to everyone - customers, the bitch at the front desk who sneerez at you, cops, drivers in traffic, ...
You'll be faster, get better routes, ride safer and have fewer hassles and more fun if you're friendly.

So I've narrowed it down to two choices:

http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/bikes/mountain-bikes/trail-mountain-bikes/fuel-ex/fuel-ex-5-29/p/2132600-2016

https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/trance.x.29er.2/14835/66298/

Without being a fanboy, which of these two bikes should I buy?

Whichever you like the feel of when your on it. If you can't test them, get this instead. http://www.on-one.co.uk/c/q/bikes/mountain-bikes/codeine
>>
Dunno, I like Sram X5 over Deore. So... maybe Trek. But they're really close, honestly.

Though those are all entry components with coil shocks. I'd just buy used, desu. Or for $500 more Diamondback has some much better bikes, provided you can go with 650b instead of a 29er.
>>
Trek and Giant are literally the same, Giant makes most of Trek's frames.

Also consider pinkbike.com/buysell
Serious mtbers often upgrade every few years to the newest model, so you can get good condition bikes that are only a few years old for at least half off. Good option for mountain bikes since you have to pay like $4k if you want a good mtb new and the ones you're looking at have low end drive train spec.

Trek 1.1c 2016 or giant defy 5? Is the carbon fork on the 1.1c worth the 110 dollars? Are neither of these good? Have about a 800 dollar budget. I've been commuting about 60 miles a week on a trek 4500 mountain bike. Is it worth the upgrade?

You could also consider a Specialized Allez E5, that and the two you listed are all fundamentally the same bike except for the Giant which is cheaper with an alu fork.

Between those three I would pick based on what dealer is nearest to you and what business you want to patronize, since odds are you'll be equally happy on any of those three bikes.

Today it fucking happened, bros.

My bike which I saved for one year long,
my daily driver,
my personal liberty in the jungle of public transportation,
my bicycle I gave all my love for,
was stolen this night.

It was parked in the basement next to the bike of my roommate (we live in a flat). His bike is still there, mine is gone. I'm from Germany.

I am so fucking sick of bike theft. If I ever see the one guy who did this I will stomp his teeth and beat him up so badly, we won't even be able to look at a bike anymore.

It is my second bicycle which has been stolen. My previous one was stolen in a public place with the lock cut in half. Again, I lost 600 € to a 5 month joyride.

Tell me about your experiences with bike nickers and what you did afterwards.
