Composite planes wouldn't look like that if you just gave them a clear coat.

The new silver paint is much more silver and more consistent than the old gray paint, it's just less silver than aluminium.

Composite planes don't look so good with clear coat. The reason for only clear coating the planes was to save weight and thus fuel. They had significant fuel savings on long flights thanks to it.

Personally I think they're great for bicycles used for transportation or recreational purposes only, since they need less maintenance less often than a standard double chainring/rear cassette drivetrain does. But the 'servicing' of them, if they need anything other than their internal lubricant flushed and replaced, is beyond the capabilities of the average home mechanic, and I'd imagine it requires some special tools in addition to special training to service it properly, and (I didn't look so I'm not sure about this at all) you might not be able to get internal parts for them anyway.

That all being said, pair one of these up with disc brakes and a drive belt instead of a chain, and you've got a drivetrain that relative to a standard drivetrain, would be more or less maintenance-free, except maybe once a year.

Performance-wise, they're lacking however. They're heavy, and they shift slowly compared to a standard derailleur type drivetrain, and I'd suspect it might suck up a few more watts of leg power compared to a standard drivetrain, too, due to internal friction, but as previously stated this is something you'll find on a city bike or a recreational bike or maybe even a cargo bike, not a high-performance carbon-fiber super-lightweight road racing bike anyway.

Lastly, they're not particularly cheap, but if you pair it up with a drive belt-style system instead of a chain, the inital cost might well be offset over time due to lack of having to replace worn parts.

On a personal note, if I actually could afford a bike for every different use, and I wanted one just for around town to run errands and such, I'd consider something like this. I do pretty much all my own wrenching and would welcome something that potentially doesn't need babying all the time.

Hmmmm I wonder why the american marketeted nexus 3 hub has 2 underdrive gears+1 direct drive while most 3-speed hubs and the older nexus sg-3r40 have one underdrive, one direct drive and one overdrive gear.
The SG-3D55 has a roller clutch for some reason too, interesting.
Nexus 4 is weird too as it has only direct drive and 3 overdrive gears
>>
>>975847
Servicing basically consists of an oil change every so many miles (for oil filled hubs) and then similar stuff to a derailer drivetrain like replacing cogs, chains, and cables when they wear out. An oil change on an Alfine is fairly easy.

Reliability depends on the particular hub, they have the potential to be very reliable though.

>>975931
>They're heavy, and they shift slowly compared to a standard derailleur type drivetrain
I switched from a 2x9 to an Alfine 11 and only gained about 700g, not a huge deal. Some are heavier, but then some are also lighter if you're fine with having less gear range. As for shifting it's much faster than a derailer, as soon as the shifter clicks you're in a different gear. You can go from one end of the range to the other as quickly as you can mash the trigger.

>>975939
I don't know if you missed my reply in the other thread so I'll repeat it, the American one would have lower gearing with the same chainring and cog combo and for some reason that appeals more to the target market in America (I'm taking your word for that).

That said I can't imagine it would be very hard to get whatever hub you desired. The amount of under and overdrive gears doesn't really matter that much as you have a lot of choice when it comes to choosing the overall gear ratio (chainring and cog).

Hey /n/
So I lived in a city until last month. I now live in a more rural area and really want to start mountain biking as a hobby. There are some great trails within 2 miles of me so it would be perfect.

I know absolutely nothing about mountain bikes. I did a bit of reading on some forums and it was mostly websites shilling their brand. I am looking for one that is under $450 and won't break on me doing some downhill biking on rocks/roots. I hear Diamondback makes some good starting bikes but I know nothing about mtb so I can't tell if it's true.

Any Mtb vets have any tips or advice on picking the right bike?

>I am looking for one that is under $450 and won't break on me doing some downhill biking on rocks/roots
Then you have to buy used. pinkbike.com/buysell
Look for a hardtail, they're cheaper, and at your pricepoint, you'll probably have to go hardtail unless you want something shitty.
>>
Btw Kona makes good stuff. But so do a lot of companies.
Oh and while hardtails aren't designed for downhill, you'll have to pay at least $1500 or so for a downhill/enduro bike, maybe $1000 if you get lucky. And that's if you're buying used. If you mean lift accessed downhill then you're out of luck at 450. If you mean just something that is capable of going over rocks/roots while descending during your cross country rides, then a used hardtail could do the trick.

Will do, thanks.

On a hard tail, do you put less air in the back wheel as you don't have suapension in the back?
And how much air do you put in the tires?

1. No
2. Optimal tire pressure depends on tire width, rider weight, and to a lesser extent, surface conditions and rider preference.

Do you live in Iraq or something? What's causing your flats?

Memeskins aren't very good at handling glass for some reason, really odd since they're marketed as endurance tires. An endurance tire should bare minimum be able to handle a normal amount of glass on urban streets.
>>
>>987194
He's probably just fat and running at 60psi

I average thousands of miles between flats on my memeskins and I ride over broken glass all the time
>>
Try some Caffelatex with latex tubes in those memeskins if you want puncture resistance.

Stick with normal butyl tubes if you don't want to pump up your tires on daily basis. The sealant won't work as well but air will stay in them for much longer.

So I have a question about the origin of the phrase "designated service", which appears to be a term used in FRA standards to refer to locomotives that are temporarily used as B-units (i.e., because the cab equipment doesn't meet FRA regs). The regs say such locomotives need to have "DESIGNATED SERVICE—DO NOT OCCUPY" stenciled on them.

The term is used, and defined, in FRA Parts 223 (dealing with certified glazing) and 229 (general safety regs). Part 223 says that where a cab window is damaged or destroyed, the railroad must put the locomotive in "designated service" within 48 hours, or taken out of service until the damaged glazing is replaced with certified glazing. Part 229 just says designated service locomotives still need to meet the fuel tank standards.

Like I get the general idea of the type of operation the regs are talking about: Locomotive can't operate independently or as a controller outside of a yard, can't be occupied by operating or deadhead crews outside a yard, and has to be marked to indicate it's in designated service. But what the hell does the phrase itself actually mean?

Pic related: It's a locomotive marked as being in designated service.

DESIGNATED
>>

I don't get it. What's being designated? The service? Designated as what? Or in what way? What does "service" mean in the context? I'm just trying to wrap my mind around why "designated service" means "b-unit".
>>
Is this the same as "trail only" as I've never heard of designated service before this.

Or are all these motors dead in tow?

I think this is one of those things that just never really occurs because the engine will be taken out of service instead and repaired.

why is TDF so lame generally?

>no EPO/PEDs
>muh traditionalism
Those are the two main reasons why the tour isn't as exiting as before. The riders simply can't put out 7 W/kg for entire climbs.

The traditionalism because Sky rides to win. As a 9 man team with a single objective. None of the other teams challenge Sky as an entire team but they have 1 or 2 guys with the Sky train on climbs and then everyone complains how it's impossible to attack Sky when they need to drop 5 guys before the GC rider is alone. The Sky way of riding isn't traditionalism and if there is one defining factor in cycling it's traditionalism. That is why Sky's way of riding pisses people off so much.

Well that attack is really hard if you're alone or have 2 men to do it. However if you rode like Sky and had 5, 6, or 7 guys to pull off that attack it isn't as impossible anymore. Sky obviously has world class riders that could be the captains on a lot of other teams helping their GC rider. But that isn't to say other teams don't have the resources to acquire a team of similar caliber.

Sky will dominate the tour for as long as it takes for other teams to realise why they're losing and fix their shit.

cant blame you for the impression though, but cycling is very different than fitness oriented triathlone and other autist disciplines.

Honestly I'd be too afraid to ride one in today's world. I work for a freight railroad and just the other day we heard about an Amtrak crashing into a barricade made on the tracks by some drunk fuckheads on a 4 wheeler. It's almost a guarantee in America that some degenerate is going to sabotage the rails just to watch it crash. We are used to freight railroads and most people don't even think about them, but give them something nice, shiny, fast and new and they'll want to fuck with it.
