>not having a mount on your handlebars/stem to put your phone on so you can have a map/play music/play podcasts without worrying about headphones or any of that shit
>>989360
i hope you're not implying that you listen to podcasts and music without headphones
I use bone conduction headphones because I'm sure nobody wants to listen to my weeb ass music
>>989361
whats wrong with that? its safer on a bike to not use headphones
So a friend of mine is selling his 1983 Honda PA50 II moped. It has pretty much all original parts with an upgraded exhaust installed. It also comes with the original exhaust. The only things it needs are a charge on the battery or new battery(the battery is only used for the lights so that's not even a must for daytime riding), possibly some bulbs for the lights, and he recommends I get new tubes, however the ones on the bike do hold air. His price for me is $400. Should I pull the trigger on this? For reference the main use case would be having something to ride within a 5 mile radius while me or my SO has the car.
Def, dude. Mopeds fucking rule.
Don't buy vehicles off your friends

Whys that?
Reposting this verbatim in new thread because it seems once bqg locks up nobody reads it anymore.
"Ok, so I've started learning how to bike because without one I won't ever get any exercise and will never be able to make my hellish schedule. All I have is my father's old Huffy Overlander, which has... problems. Its brakes SUCK and grab at different times, the gear shifter sounds like its mincing a whale every time it changes and often sends a shock through the entire bike, the bike itself just feels heavy and flimsy, and the saddle can't be adjusted or from what I can tell even removed.
From what I've read online its a department store bike, though my father can't confirm. Is it worth taking to the bike shop and salvaging? If not, what would be a good replacement? I'm pretty set on having a hybrid, but I don't know for sure if that is the direction I should go."
Your seat issue is probably just a carriage bolt.
Take off the seat, the without taking the bolt all the way out, smack that shit with a hammer and it should be able to come up and down now.
Your stem might also be this way if it's a shitty dept bike.
Check out your derailleurs and make sure the teeth aren't all worn down, too.
What do you mean your brakes 'grab at different times', like while you're riding and not touching them? Then they're cockeyed or your wheels aren't true.
>>989295
The brakes will grab at different points of pressure when I grab. Instead of a steady increase of pressure it'll randomly grab harder even though I'm holding the brake at the same pressure.
I also checked the action of the brake itself and the rim of both tires. Both don't have any visual blemishes and the same surface, and from what little I can tell the wheels and brake assembly seem to be on aligned and straight. When I spin the wheels I don't see any wobble. When I use either brake though, one side pad of the brake contacts before the other, and the pressure I need to put for both to touch changes every pull by a little bit.
Is it worth buying a new stem and fixing the brakes and shifters or just getting a better bike?
>>989304
You don't need a new stem or a seat post, like I said, take your time and smack the shit out of it.
I trash picked an 80s dept bike, made in mind with the buyer never actually going to ride or adjust it, a fashion item, and it took me a good half hour of smacking and wiggling before anything started to move.
As for the brakes, I dunno. Wouldn't be too hard to get new ones.
So long as they stop you, I wouldn't worry about replacing them until you just straight get a new bike.
In short, adjust your seat, and keep using it meantime, but think about another bike because your's sounds like shit.
Posted this on /fit/ and they told me to come here and ask. I want to buy a cheap reliable bike to ride to the gym and back. What should I look for in a bike?
>>989244
A used 80/90 road one.
Two wheels. No rust.
>>989244
Low price. No dampers of fluff. The €400 plain Kona Dew is a good choice. Lack of discs are not an issue for fair weather casual riding.
Believe it or not boys, a nigger stole my bike. I chained it up outside the train station, and when I got back from school, it was gone. The Chicago Transit Authority played me a video of a nigger using what appears to be a small crowbar to break my lock.
Help me pick a used bike, /n/

I hate thieves as much as the next guy, but you deserved it, holy shit you must be naive to think nothing would have happened.
as a community, we can prevent a lot of these thefts if we just stopped giving them opportunities
I tried to do wheelies and forgot that I was clipped in. Landed badly on my back.
Rate my stupidity.

Any of you nigs have any experience with these new Vittoria g+? I'm debating between these or rebuying another pair of 4000s 2s.
I tried Corsa CX tires and they felt more comfy but noticeably less responsive than GP4000SII. Seems to be a common opinion among people who have tried both. the GPs feel fast but ride like wood.
Maybe G+ is the answer to this gap? Couldn't hurt to try em out. Schwalbe Ones are surprisingly good as well, for a tire made in Asia
I have them. Only got them mounted last week and did 50 miles on them. They seem very nice but my only standard of comparison is gatorskins. They are certainly much more comfortable and grippy than the gators.
No experience either, but I did like the schwalbe one better than the 4000sII

Did some work on my boss' friend's bike and he gave me this set of open pros he had laying around for free! Fucking sick af senpai
Don't mind the saddle position, I think I have a stripped bolt that needs replacing.
Behold my shitbike.

Thought I'd post a thread about this. Didn't take any pics of the teardown, but it was originally equipped with fenders, downtube shifters and 10 speeds. Here's a pic of my brother sanding it.
You can see in that picture that we're working by hand and with a small sander... also the crankset is still attached. A bit later I tried to remove it and totalled the cotter pin on the drive side. Had to grind it off
>>987692
Here's where I'm at now. Sanding was way too much effort and couldn't get around the lugs. I used a dremel and some sanding thingys to get those. The rest took paint stripper. Did a few coats, letting sit for 30mins each to get to here.
>>987693
Shouldve used the stripper first
29er just feels clunkier and slower in comparison to 26 I recently got a 29er and after riding some familiar trails everything became much harder (unresponsive) and slower for me. I'm a tall rider (6'1) and fell for the meme because the frame just felt perfect but now looking back I rather ride a smaller 26 again.
If you enjoy your 26 and thinking about getting a 29er don't fall for the meme and try it out first like try it out well not just a few loops around LBS because you are going to regret it when you finally buy it and realize that apart from a bit smoother riding you lose all the agility and benefits of a 26er.
>>986827
I won't say you're wrong, but i think you will adjust your riding style to where if you might easily make the opposite complaint in a few years.
Well YOU won't complain, because you already have the experience of a 26er, so you will just be able to easier transition between riding styles to utilize the strength of each wheel size.
Get a shorter stem.

Ever since working for my local mass transit system, I've wondered something. Why maintain a massive overhead electrified catenary system as opposed to self-powered trains?
>>986263
Firstly, because the train would need gianormous batteries to store all the energy they'd need during a day
Secondly, because you'd have to maintain and replace those batteries which is fuckexpensive
And thirdly, you'd have to maintain the charging stations and move trains to and from there, also you'd need lots of those because all trains would be charging at the same time overnight.
Self-powered trains already exist, they're called diesel trains. But anywhere where you have a certain level of traffic the diesel system becomes uneconomical a nuisance for the same reasons (limited range, costlier maintenance, need to take trains to fueling stations).
>>986263
trains be slowing?
>>986266
Yeah, we have a couple of trolleys that go over a bridge on battery power for a small section of track. I see both of them in the yard during operating hours often.
And I suppose a diesel train running through downtown every 5 minutes might bother some people.
So a diesel train only makes since with fewer, larger loads? And a bus is small and flexible in a way that would not work for a larger LRV?
Should the Norristown High Speed Line (historically the Philadelphia & Western Railway) be considered an interurban railway, or a rapid transit line?
It began life as the former, but has since evolved into something resembling the latter.
Still an interurban no matter what SEPTA says. P&W lives!
An interurban rapid transit light rail.
