A hot air balloon that crashed in Texas, killing all 16 people on board, likely hit power lines before it plummeted to the ground, the National Transportation Safety Board said Sunday.

They should have turned off the power lines
Should I get a road bike, a hybrid, or a MTB?
I'm planning on riding this bike to destinations within my town. We do have some shitty ass roads and some you can't even ride on, due to the probability of getting hit by a car and have to sometimes stick to the sidewalks.
I've rode shitty hand me down MTB's all my life and I'm looking to get a brand new nice bike around $250. I heard road bikes are fast but the way the handle bars go down under and make you lean far forward seems uncomfortable
pic related is the bike I was planning on getting.
tldr; road, MTB, or hybrid for riding around town?
>>987327
>I've rode shitty hand me down MTB's all my life
I would suggest getting a much nicer used bike off craigslist but it sounds like you're dead set on getting a new bike. Which is fine I guess.
For exceptionally shitty roads, the factor that will make or break your choice of bike is tire clearance on the frame and brakes. Bigger tires will really take the sting out of the roads. Think 32-35c. No road caliper brake will accomodate tires of that size. You're going to need discs(probably out of your price range), cantilevers(shitty) or V-brakes(ehhh.)
That limits your choice of bikes to cyclocross, touring, or hybrid. Probably only the hybrid will be in your budget.
DO NOT GET FRONT SUSPENSION. Shitty front suspension is worse worse worse than no suspension, and a $250 will have uber shitty suspension.
>>987328
my craigslist is shitty and is just filled with ghetto tier frankenstein bikes, kids bikes, or old ass collectors and pros bikes being sold for like 3000 dollars.
I don't really want to go past $300 for a nice bike, because at that point i could probably just start saving up for a fucking car.
>>987332
Yeah, bikesdirect bikes are probably right up your alley then. The bike in your picture will not handle fatter tires though. You need something with different brakes.
Within your budget a hybrid is probably most realistic, even though people on this board shit all over hybrids.
So I want to become a bicycle mechanic as a full time job. I live in Canberra AU and already have some basic skills from the home maintinence I do.
Should I do a course first, or find an employer who will train me on the job? Despite Canberra being a very cycle friendly city, I can't find any courses held here. Is it worth uprooting to Melbourne to do one?

A neighbor and friend from my stint as a Brooklyn hipster scumbag set up a bike shop in a burned out storefront, no joke. He was a goddamn squatter ahahaha. Bought his tools, spare parts, and a folding workstand with him to work every morning, took it all home with him when he left at night.
Now his shop is actually booming and he pays rent like a normal business owner. Last I spoke to him he had just hired a second mechanic and someone to handle the front end.
>>987132
Fun fact: bicycle mechanics are the lowest paid profession
Yes, the lowest paid period. Pizza delivery dudes and fast food "cooks" will get to look down their pimply noses at you.
>>987135
I would totally do something like that, but my city's population is only 350K and it already has an least five or six bike stores.
What do you guys think the best bus/streetcar/tram/subway ever produced is?
I'll start with the CLRV. Manufactured by UTDC in the late '70s, they still make up most of Toronto's streetcar fleet.
I really like the way that the GM Old Look bus and the PCC streetcar compliment each other, and I have an extremely autistic fantasy about operating a fleet of both in a small 1940s city.
E233. Mirrored hardware and spare pantographs so the train can continue after major hardware failure, very powerful air conditioning, 16 LCDs per car, configurable for subway, suburban and interurban and contains less soul than a Singaporean.

So after taking an entry level CAD class and subsequently getting hooked on SolidWorks, I started modelling this narrow-gauge steam engine just for fun. It started out nicely but now I have modeler's block for several reasons. One being that I have no idea how to model Walschaerts valve gear. The others being the "finishing touches" (ie instruments in the cab, numbering/lettering, etc).
This would normally belong in >>>/3/ (a board even more desolate than /n/) but I figured I could turn this into an /n/ community project. I'd absolutely love to hear suggestions of features/parts to add both for realism and for personal/aesthetic purposes.
Background: The engine is an outside frame 0-4-4 designed to run on 15-inch track (the distance between the wheel flanges). I tried to use a blend of both European and American styling but it turned out to lean more towards the Victorian aesthetic. The engine is currently unpainted though I have tinkered with several different colors (pic related). There are no instruments in the cab yet other than the firebox. SolidWorks mass analysis puts the whole assembly at roughly seven tons, which I found rather surprising.
Don't suggest adding anything too obnoxious because this is ultimately going into my design portfolio for my resume.
>>986283
Here's what she looks like in red.
Do black and gold for the engine, you flamboyant foamer. It's the only acceptable color combo.
ADD SOME FIRE STICKERS
why is asiana airways called that even tho its focused on South Korea?

why are you such a faggot?

i dunno probs cuz i drooped out of school and sit on a computer all day

I don't suppose you've heard about airasia
/n/, is it weird to never stand up when pedaling, especially up a hill?
I have a decent road bike and I never, ever stand up when pedaling, not even for a few revolutions, but I always see the guys who are more into riding doing it, even the ghetto kids on shitty bikes.
I don't think I have the balance to do it, but I also don't see the point, I go pretty smoothly sitting down (I'm a novice so it isn't going really fast and smooth, but standing up seems to jerk around a lot)
i avoid it because it feels like im damaging the bike and i like to be nice
>>983555
>I don't think I have the balance to do it
Then you shouldn't be riding a bike, let alone on public streets. Ugh I bet you run clipless too.
I hardly ever stand, mostly just to stretch when my butt gets sore. I usually shift up 2 - 4 gears before standing depending on the cassette setup. Its annoying if you spin out a gear while standing, since you can't shift with that much load on the drivetrain.
If I encounter a short hill I'll stand instead of downshifting. But with bigger hills its not worth the effort as you'll just spike your HR and buildup lactic acid.
What do you think?
How is it a bus when it runs on rails?
Might have some uses like lessening traffic at an airport or reducing the size of a bridge/tunnel needed
2011 called. They want their meme back.
I wanna do a bike tour through CO starting in a week or two, I've done almost no planning so I'm probably just gonna wing it. I would like to do a ride that minimizes hill climbing and maximizes scenery. I plan to bike for about a week up to a month, with 20-30 mile days. Can anyone share some potential routes? I'll post more thoughts later after I do some more planning. Theeeeenks.
>pic related is my old touring rig, yeah you can tell Im uber prepared for this (i have a better rig now but it's still ghetto)
>>991081
Oh yeah, I would probably start near Denver, but potentially somewhere else.
>>991081
And the week up to a month depends on how long my bike lasts. So if you share a route just assume it would be about a month at 30 MPD
>>991081
If your goal is minimal hill climbing, that pretty much limits you to the eastern half of the state, and if you want scenery too (not just endless miles of plains) than you'll need to want to stick close to the Front Range.
How about a trip between Canon City and Ft. Collins? That'd be about 200 miles each way
Canon City to Colorado Springs US 115
-use local roads and city trail network to get from south C. Springs to Palmer Lake
Palmer Lake to Sedalia on CO 105
-use local roads and city trail network to go from south Denver up to Golden
Golden to Boulder on CO 93
Boulder to Lyons on US 36
Lyons to Ft. Collins on the various county roads that skirt the west side of Loveland.
Going to College next month in Ann Arbor MI. What is a bike I can use for the next few years every day for basic transportation and not worry about any major issues ever. what should I look for? What are quality brands? How many speeds? I've never had a very nice bike because the area I live in is so rural you need to bike 20 miles to get anywhere and I pretty much know nothing.
>>990524
And how common is bike theft really? What is a quality bike lock?
>>990524
>Ann Arbor MI
If you plan on going out of the city, you'll want something with an engine. It's quite a way to the next place of any real size, and MI is deathcage central.
>>990524
AA has some bretty gud bike shops. Might be able to get away w/ 3-speed IGH on a commuter bike
Has anyone shipped a bike internationally? I'm trying to get a bike from Sicily to California. The bike is under 12kg and I can get a bike box no problem. The real problem is that I'm going to Munich after Sicily and I'm trying to decide if I should just travel with it in the box (leave it with my friend in Munich) and fly it back with me from Munich to California (layovers in London and Canada). What are the duty fees I'll need to pay if there are any? It's a used road bike from the 60s if it matters. I figured maybe it's a different set of rules for used goods. Shipping via UPS, DHL, Fedex seems way more expensive with my initial search.
>It's a used road bike from the 60s
You're going to pay more in shipping fees than the bike is worth you mong. Trash it and just buy a new one wherever you end up.
>>990539
I'm not concerned about the value of the bike itself, I just really would like to have a bike from my time in Sicily/Italy. Thanks for your useful tips, excellent use of green text.
It's looking like it'd be like 150 euro to get it to Cali if I take it with me when I fly but I'm not sure about duty fees/taxes or whatever. Does it apply in my case?
>btw it's a De Rosa
>>990548
My only experience is buying shit from chinese exporters, but generally in the US you won't get hit with any import tax so long as the item is under $5k or so, and isn't something that will piss off the FDA like dairy products.
Although this was stuff like flashlights/batteries and a tablet- not something as large as a bike. I heard DHL can be a pain in the ass though.
The fact its used won't make a difference.
any reliable, or bad experiences with using clipless for riding fixed? I recently put together a nice NJS build after 10 years of not riding fixed, and prior to that I've always just used clips/straps. I've raced road and mtb for about 6 years now so i'm completely familiar with clipless. I did once have my foot pop out in a sprint on my road bike, although i had crappy old Look pedals at that time. so, are they pretty safe for skidding? thanks.
I used bmx straps (specificly orgin8) durable n can wear street shoes cuz i used my fixie for commuting and just poking around,
if u gotta go fast by all means use your road shoes
If you unclip sprinting you will most likely get thrown otb by your other pedal so there's that
>>990263
clipless is fine if you have awareness of the physics of riding a fixed gear. i assume you can trackstand indefinitely at this point as well, so you're not just going to stop and plop everywhere. give it a shot, just take it slow while your muscle memory works out how to fixed gear bicycle.
CAN WE HAVE A OWN SECTION FOR THE BICYCLES ?
AND SINCE WHEN ARE BICYCLES TRANSPORT?
I would love a board just for bicycles. The train/bus/boatfags are ruining the board. Gliderbros are cool, though they haven't posted a lot recently.
Threadly reminder that /n/ is among the slowest boards on 4chan as it is, and cycling is the only thing keeping traffic on /n/ high enough to justify its continued existence.
If cycling got moved to its own board, /n/ would be deleted shortly thereafter, and all you'd be left with was a /cyc/ board that no longer felt the need to graciously ignore your weird train threads.
You're the ones getting the good deal out of getting lumped in with us, not the other way around.

Since like 5 minutes after they were invented.
Best speed/value bike on flat?
flat bar road bike, obviously.
track bike
I mean a model
also how second hand compete?
I am 175cm (5'7) and an inseam of 81cm. I got told by a few bike shops that a 52cm bike would be best for me. I really dig the Caad 12 and found a used one 400$ cheaper than a brand new one but it's 54cm. Should I still go for it even if it's a little too bug for me or should I save for a new one?
Also, suggestions for a beater road bike at around 100-500$ CAD? Something that doesn't attract thieves.
Also arm's lenght is about 71cm
>>989554
You dont want a bike thats too big for you. No adjustments will fix that issue and make it comfortable. Save up for one that fits right.
175cm is 5'9.
