"Sooo what are them fat tire bikes for?"
Shut up dad.
"soooo, uh, are those FAT tires fer sand or mud or what?"
>>993083
They go anywhere, where I am there are hundreds of miles of ATV trails that 2.3" tires can't handle. I am sick of dealing with cagers and I only bike where they can't go. Hopefully this spring I am headed to the California/Nevada/Utah desert to do some backcountry exploration.

yo /n/iggas, I've got an old Raleigh Delta that I bought from some guy off Kijiji. I'm going to throw some new pedals on it, already redid the brake pads and I'm in the process of replacing brake and shifter cables. Couple of questions:
1) - in the 5th cog and the 7th cog (lowest gear, sometimes the 6th as well) the chain slips off the chainring and it's almost like the teeth of the chainring just spin while the chain is just barely off the ring. I've got two front chainrings with no front derailleur - this seems to be stock. Is there a term for this issue, and what could be causing it? Rear derailleur not behaving properly, somehow? I checked the chain and it's not worn out just yet. Half-debating replacing the entire drivetrain, but...
2) This bike was originally a 12 speed - it's now got Alex DM18 mountain bike rims on it and it has a 7 speed cassette on the back. The shifter is a shimano, as is the cassette, both the proper speeds, but the shifter requires two clicks to get out of 2nd gear, whereupon it jumps to 4th - this is the only goofy shit going on with the shifting. What could be happening here? Also, is the cassette and wheel setup fucked the way it is?
Thanks.

Euro-style touring bars
What is that one thing you notice about another cyclist that makes you think 'that guy has at least one DUI'?
Rides in jeans and ratty clothing, gray beard and baseball cap, shitty unmaintained bike, jansport or some sort of canvas backpack, maybe a bell. Riding on the sidewalk with occasional jumps onto the road making life very frustrating for cagers
Flipped-up drop bars

What are you supposed to ride in if you're a hipster on his way to work?
This was given to me by a relative. The markings say it's a 1984 Pinarello Veneto. What do you guys reckon this is worth?

Cut off the rear derailleur hanger with a hacksaw and covert to fixed gear, you can get about $1,000 on ebay if you do that
Why can't you bunny hop /n/?
>>990753
I bought into the 29er meme and have comically long chainstays.
but really? I can't into the hip thrust.
Instead I bought clipless pedals and 29er+ rims/tires so I can look slightly down my nose at full-susfags while being secretly ashamed.
Also, I've kinda chickened out as I enter middle age. One of my neighbors permanently crippled himself on what amounts to a loca bunny hill and I haven't done much singletrack since. He hasn't talked about it, but I'm pretty sure I know the exact spot he wrecked. It's a simple double-tabletop, but it's also just slightly off-camber and just a little bit longer than what you can clean without cranking.
Like.. the guy is UNLUCKY to be alive, and it was just some scrub segment. I've been out to real mountains since and I have more fun with uphill tech anyway. So fuck bunnyhopping. I'll work on powerstroking.
Because I'm afraid of my rims getting utterly fucked since I'm a road fag
I can only do it when I'm drunk

Somewhere in China or India there is a waifu that would love to pretend to tolerate your company. It is not terribly expensive to go find them and bring them home.
I'an relatively new to biking. I just picked up this bike for $450. How did I do?

Why? It rides well.
For just $2500 you can own a "Special"-ized bicycle running a 9/10-speed kludge drivetrain.
WHAT A BARGAIN
> The bike is now using a Shimano Tiagra 3x crankset (50-39-30t) and 10-speed cassette (11-36t) in lieu of the SRAM 2x crankset last year. The benefit of the triple crankset is that it adds more gear range overall (23-127″), including some lower climbing gears and an extra gear at the top. In order to fit the large-sized cassette on, Specialized used a well-known hack where you match the cable pull of a 9-speed rear derailleur with a 10-speed shifter!
Looks like an average $1000 commuter bike with $200 worth of racks and fenders thrown on. What's the extra $1500 for?

What's a good bike multi tool to get? I volunteer at a very chaotic, fresh bike coop with young children and we're always having a hard time keeping tools together and it would be much easier to have my own multitool that can do most everything that I can hang onto. My friend has the crank brothers c19 I believe and I like it, but what do yall like to use? 35 40 bucks is my budget max. Thanks.
>hey buddy, can i borrow your multitool for a second?
>uhh, yeah sure
rip multitool :'(
>>989476
I have a CB m17 and it's ace. Can't remember what it cost though. Going with the m19 and getting a few extra tools is a safe bet if you can afford it.
I have that tool, it doesn't have the right bit for bleeding my brakes, but otherwise it's fine, no complaints. I tihnk it was like 30 bucks.
What is the longest ride you ever did, where did you ride, how long did it take you, and did you sleep during the ride? Also include age and gender for comparisons.
90 miles, biked to & on the iron horse trail in WA. maybe 4,000 ft in elevation total? I don't remember how long it took. I slept in a tent, biked back the next day. 21/f
>>988596
That looks like a really nice trail. 90 miles round trip or 180 miles round trip?
>>988597
180 miles round trip. It's a super rad trail for sure.

Cyclists who are so proud that they are cyclists
Hey, as a starting cyclist, I wanted to know the worst states and countries to cycle in, by amount of assholes/cagers, and road quality. Post your experiences with your state/country, and others you've been to.
I live in Toronto, Canada, and it's not too bad, not many climbs in my opinion, and they are putting money into creating more cycle tracks(segregated cycling lanes) which is fantastic.
Ameribro here.
I was in Toronto two weeks ago. You guys definitely have a good cycling culture going on, at least around downtown. The new bikelane along the waterfront is pretty sweet.
Anyhow, when it comes to the US, it mostly sucks. There are a few hot spots, usually urban centers with a bunch of yuppies/hipsters. There are some rich suburbs that have ok bike lanes, but those are used by weekend warriors and not actual commuters.
London is a death trap for cyclists due to us driving on the other side of the road, lots of trucks come over from the continent and can't see the cyclists from their cab and end up crushing them when turning left.
Australian. Just need to keep watch for kangaroos and road trains around Bondi- otherwise it is bonza.

Guess I'll find out if that lactate tolerance work is really paying off or not.

In continuation of the last thread:
I am strongly considering upgrading to an FSA K-Force Light BB386EV0 standard 53/39crank (with the MegaEvo bottom bracket) now that a helpful anon has helped me with compatibility concerns. I've read a lot of reviews and it has a high stiffness/weight ratio, however FSA has had some quality issues with recent models. Has anyone any experience with this particular crank?
does anyone else live in new england?
how the fuck do you train with any regularity with the weather here?
