Can I have some feedback on how I service my bike?
- I use a syringe to apply lube into each of the chain links before putting it on the bike.
- I use a clean silky paintbrush to apply lube onto the teeth of the cassette, so I don't paint the entire cassette, just brush over the teeth.
- RaceFace Narrow Wide 32t with a 9 speed cassette with no bash ring or chain guide.
- Using an Alivio RD. (Will upgrade to something 10 speed eventually).
- Tubeless on medium difficult terrain
- 9cm stem, I find it helps me keep my wheel forward when things get rough
Basically trying to mod my Stance into pic related minus the suspension set.

putting any lube anywhere on your cassette is retarded, you're just making your cassette sticky so it can collect maximum dirt
I slather motor oil all over my chain so there's sludge everywhere. is that bad?
>>996427
using Crisco™ would be preferable

Just got one of these for £500
Looks good to me, yeah.
Eh, it's alright. It sucks they cheapened out on the crankset, and I'm not so sure how well would Sora road brake levers work with mechanical brakes, never tried it though. Wheels are also nothing special but not awful either, I'd get them trued and the spokes re-tensioned as soon as they go out of true (they will)
>>996339
It's a lot of bike for the money, imo.
Hey guys. Sorry for the delay, almost finished with the bike. Found a cheap wheelset on kijiji ($75). Need a chain now....
It's running the cheapest tires I could find in the city. Michelin Dynamic Sport. I was thinking of painting the wheels yellow but maybe not.
Don't bump this thread off the board you bullies.
>>996158
I wouldn't unless you can do a decen t paint job. Even then idk its a cool looking bike tho where'd you get them bars?
>>996158
>painting the wheels yellow
NO
PLEASE DON'T
THE YELLOW CRANKSET IS HIDEOUS ENOUGH ALREADY
Odd bike features
Also overly decked out commuters
Are there any books that have everything you need to know about bike repair? There's lots of conflicting ideas on the internet.
OP, if you're working on older bikes, and want information skewing basic, I'd check out Everybody's Bike Book.

Not "everything" there is to know, but almost certainly everything you will need to know. You need to get seriously arcane before you move from Park Tool to Sheldon. If it's not on Sheldon, Google is almost your only resource. If it's not easily google-able, ask here.

This. I worked at a shop and this was the training manual

Found your problem m8
I recently picked up an old Shwinn Mesa Runner for $60. Looks exactly like pic related but with a different seat and handles. It currently has non indexed thumb shifters and was looking to upgrade to more modern shifters. Its a 10 speed but modern 5 speed shifters are much more expensive than 7 speed ones. Is it possible to convert this to a 14 speed or should I just get new 10 speed shifters? Thanks guys.
You can get 7 speed shifters and adjust the derailleur's limit screws to use them with 5 speeds.
>>995986
Will this work with the different spacing between the gears. If a 7 speed quick thumb shifter is indexed for 7 speed gear spacing will it still work?
If a 7 speed cassette fits will the current derailleur work for all 7 gears?
>>995987
5 and 7 speed freewheels have the same spacing. And yes, you can replace your 5 speed one with a 7 speed.
hello, /b/ros.I am tryina learn how to ride the bicycle.I did that when i was little and i am 20 now. I don't know if i just forgot how or i am too afraid of it.I tried standing on it while holding onto my sister and i was shaking. The seat is also a bit higher and i cannot let it any lower and my legs aren't reaching all the way down normally.
I also cannot get a new one atm. or helping wheels.
Any tips?
:)
>>995898
thanks for the bump
Find a nice gentle slope/hill that ends in a wide and empty space.
Walk to the top of the hill, get on your bike, ride it down without pedaling. Get used to how much more stable your bike feels at speed. That's the key. Most beginners assume slower = more stable. It's the opposite for bikes. The faster you go, the less wobbly it will feel.

tl;dr
>Proposal to completely dismantle the aging LRT-2 line and replace with with novel and intelligent BRT system
>such move would save about 12 billion pesos of taxpayers money annually (in fare subsidy)
>They are also planning to replace of section of backbone railway lines with BRT, by uprooting the tracks and build a dedicated BRT lanes
What do you people think?
Great
>>995757
Sounds like a beginning of a wonderful new boondoggle.
>>995757
Functionally there is very little difference between light rail and BRT, so I'm not sure how this makes a hole lot of sense given that they already have the light rail infrastructure.
What are you guys packing in case of a random cager attack?

I used to think my seat would be a good weapon, but now it's bolted.
Eh, I had some amateur error, when trying to fixate my disc brakes.
I openend the oil Torx screw of the Shimano brake, and then pulled the brake.
Oil flew out like when you have shits diarrhea.
Anyways, now I lost a bit of oil in my rear brake system, and I notice it, I can pull the lever all the way back and it barely breaks.
I found no clear results about what to use, because people keep on arguing anyways.
Funny enough my bike doesn't use the original mineral oil, it's yellowish and not red. The distributor who put my bike together also thought it is not necessary it seems.
What is your experience with different kind of oils for your disc brakes?
Shimano doesn't give out any data about their stuff, so it's hard to compare only by specsheet.
>>995661
Your old fluid was likely yellow, instead of red, because it had become contaminated, not because the seller used the wrong stuff.
As for what you should use, the only answer in your case is Shimano mineral oil. Mixing/switching brake fluids will contaminate your system in the best case, and damage your seals at worst.
>>995672
That's a myth according to what most people say in the different forums.
That's what the manufactures tell you to do, because they want to earn more money.
But there are good enough alternatives out there, which a way cheaper.
And it didn't damage the seals.
Only additives and some other stuff could damage the seals.
>because it had become contaminated
Nah, no way. The red colour is nothing more than a dye. Magura uses blue dye, there are also green dyes.
>>995675
You don't have to use genuine Shimano fluids. However you have to use the same type of fluid as your brake system requires. Mineral oil and DOT fluids can't be mixed and can't be used in brake systems meant for the other type of fluid. The systems use different type of rubber in their seals and if you use incorrect fluids the seals WILL fail at some point. It won't be instantaneous and it might not even be spectacular when they fail. It might take months for it to happen but it will happen at some point.
So mineral oil for mineral oil systems DOT for DOT systems. It doesn't have to be the genuine fluid from the brake manufacturer as long as it's the same type of fluid. The manufacturers obviously tell you to only use their fluids and only change them at authorized dealerships. Partly because it keeps their liability risks much lower and partly because it brings in more profits.
The colouring on brake fluids is in fact a dye but usually they're used as a way to tell that two fluids aren't compatible with each other.
When picking brake fluids pay close attention to the boiling temperature of the fluid you're buying if it's not the original. Especially with mineral oil brakes you've gotta be careful with what you're buying when not buying the genuine fluid. DOT fluids can be mixed, other than DOT 5 shouldn't be mixed with any other DOT fluid. Also NEVER use DOT fluid from an opened container as DOT fluids are hydroscopic and absord water from the atmosphere lowering their boiling point.
Though I can't for the life of me understand why some bike brake manufacturers have decided to go with mineral oil. DOT fluids are literally made and designed with brakes in mind and it is readily available everywhere.
Hey frie/n/ds, I've got a Croix de Fer and a alu for racing, but I'm going to use my Cycle2Work scheme to get a Bianchi Pista for cutting about town and, in Winter, riding velo. Is this a dope or dopey idea?
You want to buy a $800 PureFix, sure, why not. Your money.
That's the 'hing; my work does a tax free, zero finance deal so I could have a total dick bike for about £400.
Just want to know whether some know's it's a totally gash decision.
I took the technician's test for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), was the hardest test I've ever took and even though I studied non-stop all week I got only a 40%. The test I took is specifically for communications. The fortunate part though was every other person in the class failed too, only 9 other people taking it. Some of these people looked like electronics engineers or managers in their 50's and 60's but still had a shit fit. I swear though, when it comes to the BART it's like the Harvard of the electrical technician's world.
The people who pass then have to take another test showing their capabilities in actually troubleshooting 555 timer integrated fans. Then after that is an interview to see if they like you. Once all these phases are passed THEN they finally offer you a job. It was honestly a 250$ waste to get a plane ticket, eat and take the metro up there just to realize you failed it. How are the technician's tests for other cities? Any easier or worse?
>>995406

>job as rail technician

>>995406
It's too bad they couldn't troubleshoot whatever was frying their trains
Does being a tech for BART even pay you enough to live in that fucking city?
